DARVO in Real Life – Surviving the Silent Battle -Part 1: “The Betrayal Nobody Saw Coming”
7 Jul 2025 · 16 min
In the opening episode of a four‑part series, mental‑health advocate and Black woman entrepreneur Tina White introduces her podcast "The Trigger and the Truth" and uses it as a platform to unpack a personal experience of extreme betrayal by a sibling. She defines DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) and explains how this manipulation pattern manifested in her life: a violent incident that left her physically and emotionally broken, followed by the sibling’s denial, character attacks, and victim‑offender role reversal. White describes the cascading effects of this betrayal on her mental health—betrayal trauma, gaslighting, moral injury, chronic anxiety, PTSD—and on her business, including loss of confidence, client distrust, revenue decline during COVID, and imposter syndrome. She contextualizes the experience within the broader challenges faced by Black women entrepreneurs, highlighting how vulnerability is often misread as weakness. Throughout the episode, she intersperses promotional segments, a hotline invitation, and a reflective dialogue (Speaker E) encouraging listeners to own their part in relational breakdowns. The episode ends with a call for listeners to name the pattern, reclaim their truth, and seek healing, while promising a continuation in part 2.

Darvo in real life: surviving the silent battle. Have you ever been gaslit so badly that you couldn't even form the words to defend yourself? Left speechless, shaking, questioning your own reality while the person who hurt you looked calm, cool, and collected? Yeah, me too. There's a name for that. And I'm willing to bet many of you listening right now have experienced it, but maybe no one ever told you what it was called. By now, if you've been listening to my podcast, the first episode detailed what happened between me, my parents' fourth child, and you all know that what happened with my parents' child forced me to face some hard truths. I could have became bitter. I could have plotted revenge. I could have even launched my own smear campaign to defend myself, but I didn't. Instead, I decided to simply tell the truth. And when I started digging deeper, trying to understand why someone would inflict such harm unprovoked, then lie about it, flip the story, drag it, add shit to it, flip-flop between versions of what happened, and then have the audacity to reach out to the person they hurt for a favor. Well, I found out there's actually a name for it. It's called DARVO— Deny, Attack, then Reverse Victim and Offender. And suddenly it all made sense. What I experienced wasn't just betrayal, it was a textbook manipulation tactic that happens to a lot of people. We just don't always have the words for it. Deny, attack, Reverse victim and offender. It's a psychological manipulation tactic where the real abuser denies the harm they cause, then attacks your credibility, and finally flips the script to make themselves the victim while you're painted as the villain. It's more common than we talk about, it's more painful than most people admit, and it nearly destroyed me both personally and in business. This isn't theory for me. This is lived experience. It's one of the most dangerous forms of psychological manipulation because it doesn't just hurt you, it confuses you, it isolates you, and it convinces the world that you're the problem. I lived through DARVO in real life. I watched it destroy my relationships and an already fractured family dynamic crumble behind it. I watched it almost destroy my business, and for years I didn't have the words to explain it until now. In this 4-part series, I'm breaking down exactly how darvo played out in my life, starting with betrayal by someone I trusted, someone I've always showed up for, and how it affected my mind, my mental health, and my ability to lead a business during one of the hardest seasons of my life. This series is for anyone who's ever been forced to defend their sanity while the world believed your abuser's lie. And by the end of it, I hope you'll have the language, the clarity, and most of all, the power to reclaim your story. 4 episodes, 1 truth. What they deny doesn't define you. This is The Trigger and the Truth. Let's talk about it.
This July on The Trigger and the Truth, we're discussing what it takes to build a business and protect your peace at the same time. From burnout in silence to emotional triggers in boardrooms, we're unpacking the mental health struggles entrepreneurs face but rarely talk about. If you've ever felt like you're breaking down while showing up for everyone else, this series is for you. New episodes dropping weekly.
When someone you trusted, grew up with, believed in, opened up to, violently attacks you in a manner that could have ended your life. Had the gun he waved in your face went off, and then he denies it ever happened. It fractures more than your sense of safety. It shatters reality. You start questioning your memory, your perception, your sanity. Self-worth. If they can harm you and still be loved or believed, you start thinking maybe you deserved it. Trust in people, in community, in your own instincts. Everyone becomes a potential threat or betrayer. And when the abuser flips the narrative and manipulates others into siding with them, you're no longer just healing from a single traumatic event. You're now fighting a social smear campaign, a systemic silencing, and emotional isolation from people who you've showed up for on many occasions. All of a sudden you're the villain. And without getting both sides of the story, they simply take what the manipulator says as gospel. It's beyond confusing. But my thing is, once you pick a side, you gotta stay over there. When the truth reveals itself, because it will sooner than later— remember what I said, once you pick a side against me, you gotta stay over there. The psychology of the abuser. Is this person a sociopath? Possibly. But here's the deeper breakdown. Traits of sociopathic narcissistic behavior: lack of empathy, no real remorse for the harm they cause, pathological lying, denial even when confronted with evidence, charm plus manipulation, knows how to perform innocence and victimhood. Image management: obsessively concerned with how others see them. Blame shifting: you become the villain in their story. Triangulation: they recruit others to turn against you—friends, family, community. Even if they're not clinically diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder, their behavior mimics it, and the impact on your nervous system is the same. Hypervigilance, chronic anxiety, self-doubt, PTSD. This is emotional terrorism masked in a smile and a sob story. And once again, you all fell for the banana in the tailpipe.

Here's the vocabulary for what you may have survived but never had words for: betrayal trauma, the deep body-level shock when someone you trusted harms you. Again, we have DARVO: Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender, a manipulation tactic. Gaslighting: the psychological tactic of making the victim doubt their reality. Smear campaign: deliberate efforts to discredit and isolate you. Moral injury: the soul-deep devastation when someone violates core human trust and values. Part 1: The Betrayal Nobody Saw Coming. When trust turns violent and business pays the price. What we're gonna discuss in this episode: the gut punch reality of betrayal by someone close, walking through life and business as a high-functioning silent sufferer, the isolation of experiencing violence as a Black woman entrepreneur, where vulnerability is mistaken for weakness, I didn't see it coming. I trusted them, not just with my business but with my safety. And in one violent moment, everything I thought I knew about loyalty, trust, and protection shattered. And the worst part? They told everyone it never happened, that I was the problem. I was living in a real-life Darvo scenario, but I didn't have the vocabulary for it yet. All I had was confusion, fear, and a business that was crumbling while I tried to hold myself together. It's one thing to be betrayed by the world, but when betrayal comes from your own sibling, somebody who knows your childhood scars, your survival story, your struggles to rise out of nothing, it cuts different. I never expected the first substantial darvo experience of my life to come from my family. After a violent incident left me physically and emotionally broken, I thought we'd eventually heal. Instead, my sibling denied the harm, attacked my character, and reversed the roles. Suddenly, I wasn't the one who was hurt. I became the villain. I wasn't the survivor. I became the liar. And for years, that lie lived louder than my truth. The emotional fallout. This incident included living with confusion. How do you heal from harm that your own family refuses to admit happened? Carrying invisible wounds, showing up as a leader, a businesswoman, a mother, while silently grieving the family bond that was shattered. Losing community trust. When other family members and mutual friends believed the sibling's version, I became isolated in her own truth. Entrepreneurship in the middle of chaos. It's hard to negotiate deals when your confidence is cracked. It's hard to lead a team when you're questioning your sanity. And it's hard to stay focused on building wealth when your own blood is tearing down your worth behind the scenes. This betrayal impacted client relationships, showing up emotionally depleted. Leadership energy, navigating imposter syndrome. Revenue loss during COVID when the emotional weight became too heavy to carry alone. The turning point, after years of trying to pray it away, work it away, and stay silent, I made the decision to return to therapy, not to fix what was broken in them, but to heal what was broken in me. This wasn't about revenge. It was about reclaiming my clarity, confidence, and truth. I share this not because I figured it all out, but because too many of us are carrying the weight of someone else's denial. Too many of us are showing up strong in the world while silencing our truth at home. You're not alone in this battle, and your truth doesn't stop being true just because your family refuses to admit it. Keep telling it anyway. That's where your healing begins. The aftermath: struggling to show up for client meetings while privately falling apart. Friends, colleagues, and community members questioning your character because the abuser was more charming than you were believable. The emotional exhaustion of trying to run a business while cleaning up a mess you didn't make. I have a question for the listeners. Have you ever been forced to defend yourself against a lie louder than your truth? What happens when your own bloodline becomes the battleground? When someone who grew up in the same struggle as you weaponizes your story, rewrites the truth, and leaves you to clean up the mess? If your family or your circle has darvo'd you, denied your pain, attacked your character, and made themselves the victim, I see you. And I promise you this: what they denied doesn't define you. Your truth does. When you name the pattern, you affirm the pain, and you interrupt the silence, that's healing. Not because they apologize, not because they change, but because you chose yourself. I'll always remember what they did. I've named it. I've released the lie and I reclaim my truth. We're healed around here, so I'm speaking from the scar, not the wound. Tune in tomorrow for part 2 of this 4-part series, Darbo in Real Life: Surviving the Silent Battle.
To tell the truth, let's unpack a heavy bag that's been bursting at the seams. We owe it to ourselves to hold ourselves accountable, owning our part in the breakdown of a relationship. One of us might be a narcissist, or maybe both of us. Are you willing to tell the truth about your role? Did you burn sage only to pass out from the fumes? Are you perhaps the root cause of the problem? I'll go first. If I'm being honest, I can be problematic when my buttons are pushed or when I feel my boundaries have been crossed. God is still working on me, and that's why we're here. I'm taking this journey with you because I need healing just as much as anyone else. I've had to confront my own tendencies. I've realized that in conflict, I almost always become an avoidant. I shut down, walk away, and don't look back. That's not healthy. So, here's the question: Can you face yourself and admit to your part? The first step toward healing is honesty.
I just want to thank everyone for being here with me today. Sharing this story wasn't easy, but it was freeing. And my hope is that it inspires you to confront your own truth and take steps towards healing. You got to remember, you're not alone. Together, we'll navigate the triggers, uncover the truths, and find paths to clarity and wellness. Until next time, take care of yourselves and each other.
Real talk. Thank you so much for spending time with me today on The Trigger and the Truth. Remember, it's all about uncovering those triggers, finding the truth, and building stronger, healthier relationships for ourselves and with
