Welcome back to The Trigger and the Truth, where we say the quiet part out loud. Today we're talking about those days, you know the ones. You've got emails piling up, invoices overdue, clients texting after hours. You haven't eaten since breakfast, your brain is fried, your body's tense, and yet you still feel like you haven't done enough. You're busy but you feel behind. You're doing everything but somehow feel like nothing is getting done. And when it's finally quiet, all you want to do is cry, scroll, or quit. Sound familiar? This is what I call functional burnout. You're showing up, you're posting, you're managing, but inside you're emotionally underwater. And the worst part is no one sees it. You're successful, right? This is the part of entrepreneurship nobody glamorizes— the pressure to keep performing while your secret unraveling. The guilt that creeps in when you take a break. The anxiety that follows you to bed and wakes up with you in the morning. When you're exhausted but you can't stop. When you're overwhelmed but there's no room to fall apart. So what do you do? You push through. Again. And that is exactly why we break. Here's the truth. It's not your schedule. It's your emotional load. You're not behind, you're overloaded. And you're not crazy, you're coping. I used to think I could outwork my way out of stress. I thought if I just organized harder, planned better, posted more, things would calm down. But it wasn't until I started managing my emotions, not just my to-do list, that everything shifted. That's why I created the 21-Day Emotional Mastery Strategy for Black Women in Business. Because we don't just need strategy, we need stability. We need to learn how to pause before reacting, recognize emotional triggers, regulate our nervous system, set boundaries without guilt, make space to process without falling apart. And it doesn't require a wellness retreat or disappearing from your life. It starts with small daily practices that help you reset from the inside out. Because emotional discipline That's your real superpower.
To tell the truth. Let's unpack a heavy bag that's been bursting at the seams. We owe it to ourselves to hold ourselves accountable, owning our part in the breakdown of a relationship. One of us might be a narcissist, or maybe both of us. Are you willing to tell the truth about your role? Did you burn sage only to pass out from the fumes? Are you perhaps the root cause of the problem? I'll go first. If I'm being honest, I can be problematic when my buttons are pushed or when I feel my boundaries have been crossed. God is still working on me, and that's why we're here. I'm taking this journey with you because I need healing just as much as anyone else. I've had to confront my own tendencies. I've realized that in conflict, I almost always become an avoidant. I shut down, walk away, and don't look back. That's not healthy. So here's the question: Can you face yourself and admit to your part? The first step toward healing is honesty.
So how do we stay emotionally grounded, especially at work? This world doesn't often give Black women room to pause, feel, or fall apart. But emotional regulation isn't a luxury, it's a lifeline. Here's how we start reclaiming our peace, even in professional spaces. I've compiled 4 tips to implement to assist with staying emotionally grounded in the workplace. 1. Pause before reacting. Before you clap back, overexplain, or absorb someone else's dysfunction, breathe. A 6-second pause activates your prefrontal cortex, giving you time to respond with wisdom, not woundedness. Here's a tip: practice saying, "Let me get back to you," even if you already know the answer. 2. Recognize emotional triggers. That tightness in your chest when someone undermines you? That's data, not weakness. Notice the pattern, name the emotion, then trace the root. Tip: keep a trigger tracker. What happened? How did I feel? What did I need? 3. Regulate your nervous system. Stress lives in the body. Grounding helps you interrupt spirals. Tip: box breathing. Inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Touch something cold or plant your feet and scan the room to orient yourself in the present. 4 is my go-to, which is to set boundaries without guilt. Your limits are sacred. Guilt is not a signal to retreat. It's proof you're disrupting old conditioning. Tip: Replace "I'm sorry, I can't" with "Thanks for understanding, that doesn't work for me." Period. 5. Make space to process without falling apart. You don't have to implode to express. Carve intentional time to journal, cry, Pray, or be, so the boardroom doesn't become your breakdown room. Tip: Schedule release rituals weekly. That 10-minute cry in your car? That's therapy too. If you know, you know. Emotional regulation isn't suppression, it's liberation. It's learning to lead yourself with care in a world that demands your labor but denies your humanity. Your peace is not optional. It's a professional asset. Ready to go deeper?
