The Lies We Tell Ourselves in Relationships That Should Have Been a One-Night Stand
10 Aug 2025 · 6 min
In this episode of The Trigger and the Truth, host Tina White, joined by speakers B and C, explores why people stay in relationships that were never meant to last. The conversation centers on a 21‑question self‑assessment designed to expose self‑deception across four phases: Origin Story (questions 1‑5), Present Reality (6‑10), Self‑Respect (11‑15), and Future Forecast (16‑21). The hosts prompt listeners to examine early red‑flag denial, current emotional labor, erosion of standards, and long‑term viability. Speaker C adds a personal accountability segment, encouraging listeners to own their role in relational breakdowns and confront avoidance patterns. The episode closes with a teaser for part 2, a call‑to‑action for listeners to share, DM, or appear as a guest, and a reminder to prioritize mental‑health‑aligned decision‑making.

The Lies We Tell Ourselves in Relationships That Should Have Been a One-Night Stand. 21 Questions to Check If You're Holding on to Something That's Holding You Back. Some relationships were never meant to go past sunrise, but here you are, years in, tired in your soul, rewriting history in your mind and calling it love. This isn't about shame, it's about truth. And the truth is, you deserve a life that feeds you, not one that drains you dry. These questions aren't here to make you feel bad, they're here to make you feel clear. So grab a notebook and answer honestly. Your future self is listening. Questions 1 through 5. The origin story check. When you first got involved, did you ignore your own deal breakers because you thought it was just casual? Did you tell yourself you could handle their red flags because you didn't think it would last this long? In the beginning, was it more about the thrill, the timing, or the physical connection than anything deeper? Did you secretly hope they'd change once they got to know the real you? Have you rewritten the story of how you met to make it sound more romantic than it really was? Questions 6 through 10: The Present Reality Check. Do you feel like you're constantly managing them, their moods, their habits, their problems more than you're enjoying them? Do you hesitate to share good news because you don't know if they'll be happy for you or jealous of you? When you picture the best version of your life, is this relationship a centerpiece or a distraction? Do you feel lonelier with them than you do when you're actually alone? Are you staying because you love who they are or because you're afraid of what leaving will force you to face in yourself? Questions 11 through 15. The self-respect check. Have you started lowering your standards just to keep the peace? Do you excuse behavior in them that you would never tolerate from anyone else? Do you feel more like their caretaker, therapist, or safety net than their partner? Have you stopped asking for what you need because it feels pointless? Do you respect them in the same way you want them to respect you? Questions 16 through 21, the future forecast check. If nothing changed for the next 5 years, would you still want to be here? Have you stayed because of how much you've invested, even though the returns are getting smaller and smaller? Do you catch yourself saying, "It's not that bad," more than, "This is really good"?
Are you holding on because you're afraid they'll do better without you?
If a friend told you they were in your exact situation, would you tell them to stay? When you think about ending it, is your biggest fear losing them or losing the version of yourself you've been in this relationship?
To tell the truth, let's unpack a heavy bag that's been bursting at the seams. We owe it to ourselves to hold ourselves accountable. Owning our part in the breakdown of a relationship. One of us might be a narcissist, or maybe both of us. Are you willing to tell the truth about your role? Did you burn sage only to pass out from the fumes? Are you perhaps the root cause of the problem? I'll go first. If I'm being honest, I can be problematic when my buttons are pushed or when I feel my boundaries have been crossed. God is still working on me, And that's why we're here. I'm taking this journey with you because I need healing just as much as anyone else. I've had to confront my own tendencies. I've realized that in conflict, I almost always become an avoidant. I shut down, walk away, and don't look back. That's not healthy. So here's the question: Can you face yourself and admit to your part? The first step toward healing is honesty.
In part 2, Sir, You're Not on My Payroll: Entitled Energy Is Expensive, I'm taking you inside one specific moment from my own life where casual dating collided with financial entitlement, insecurity, and the audacity to try and cash in on my hustle.
