This Parenting Mistake Teaches Children Not to Care

Taking away a child's favorite things as punishment can backfire. Kids develop 'defensive detachment,' an emotional shutdown that leads to numbness, lost motivation, and trouble connecting with others later on.

Children are born with a deep seated need for connection and attachment. When we use these sources of joys as weapons against them to get them to behave, we create a rift in their sense of safety. They begin to associate the things that they love with pain and disappointment, leading them to build emotional walls to protect themselves. This is what we call defensive detachment. It's a survival mechanism where children learn to shut down their emotions and needs to avoid further hurt. Using what a child cares about against them is a big mistake mistake because it causes a child to become defensively detached. Unfortunately, this detachment can have long lasting consequences. It can lead to emotional numbness, a lack of motivation and difficulty forming meaningful connections later in life.
