Behind the Marketing Ep. 2: Sales Calls, Systems, and My OCD

Two marketers break down how to scale ad creative for Meta and TikTok: shoot raw, edit fast, and make lots of variations instead of a few polished videos. They negotiate payment terms with a 45-day prep window and discuss preorder emails to manage cash flow for small brands.

All I'm hearing are a bunch of excuses, man. Why would you be scared to touch knives? Because I was afraid I was gonna murder somebody with it. Literally. Protect yourselves from crack cocaine. Honestly, I'm getting back in that routine. The first 4, 5, 6 orders, and it like destroyed his life. Dude, these got delivered on! Okay, so I'm really stoked about this. I've kind of got this cool thing going in my office. It's a little bit of like hodgepodge. I buy a bunch of stuff that I like and it somehow kind of works. I mean, take a look. Got a bunch of these things. Now all these things are just things that are meaningful to me in one way or the other, but I saw something the other day. You know, you see it on Instagram, it's gotta be true, right? But literally it freaked me out. So I've been doing some research on it. They said that the average person that spends more than 6 hours a day sitting, it's the equivalent of them smoking like 2 packs of cigarettes. So I've been sitting here for probably the last 10 years, 8, 9, 10, sometimes 15 hours a day, really without any movement. So what I'm really excited to show you guys is this. Walking treadmill, baby. Now I understand I'm a late adopter, okay? This is not something, anything that's special, but I like this vibe. It's some company called Meratch, and I've been testing around with it. I've had it for 2 days, but I found that like 0.9 is like a really good speed. It's not too much, it's not very distracting on the call, but dude, I'm getting like 12, 13,000 steps a day. It's fantastic. I feel like it's helping me on my calls too. Like, the energy is there. Like, you're moving, right? Tony Robbins talks about where where focus goes, energy flows. Like my focus is on movement, I'm being engaging. I feel like it's helping me out on these sales conversations and overall I feel like pretty good. So, you know, I'm just going for hot girl summer right now. I'm gonna be shredding out, getting my 13,000 steps in a day. And for all you haters out there, they're like, oh dude, you know, your return on steps goes down drastically after 8,000 steps. Do I care? No. If I can get 13,000 steps in or 14,000 steps in I got 14,000 steps in today. All it means is I can go home and eat more Oreos. But more than anything, support the United States of America. So if you're interested in learning about this, that, the other, the best products, where to get these, they're also made in the USA, click the link below and I'll see you on the other page. Give you a special discount right now, I promise. You have a 100% money-back guarantee. I can't wait for you guys to join the family. Mm-hmm. That would take literally 3 minutes to make. I was running a little bit late to work today 'cause I had a late start to the day. It is what it is. So I actually took the first like 5 to 7 minutes in the car. And initially in the car, I could tell he was just kind of like a little bit skeptical. I don't know if the call that he had with us went very well initially. And so I was kind of just mainly trying to understand his exact concerns and his exact problems. That's a completely different type of ad angle that we could try. So we just gotta get really creative with this stuff.
Yeah, the angles is where I'm like really struggling. Yeah. And then it's like, you're completely right. It's like the, kind of the creativity goes stagnant. I mean, especially on TikTok, you find a hook that works or a style of video that works and you just kind of pedal to the metal. You can make like 5 or 6 more videos that are gonna produce hand over fist. But I think what I'm gathering here is that that's not gonna fly with Meta.
Not gonna fly with Meta and it's not gonna fly as you scale your campaigns. Like they want, wide variations in creatives. Different types of styles, different lengths, different overall types of stories and angles, storytelling. And so this is kind of the challenge that you're gonna have is you want kind of this, I think, if I understand correctly, you want kind of this cinematic type of creative that will look really cool, that in your mind will stand the test of time, AKA last longer, but in all reality what you need to be doing is creating 10 times more content. When I called him, I think that he kinda forgot a lot about what we do. So the first part of the call was kinda just understanding his concerns. He wanted to make sure it was clear exactly what we were gonna do for him, so I spent a lot of time when I actually got to my office here, which you guys saw, kinda reiterating our system and our process, helping him understand kinda the unique selling proposition that we have, right? And what I would recommend to you is don't go so aggressive on the budget and create these really expensive ads when in all reality they don't perform very well. We're so convinced that all you gotta do is find a good ad. That's 50% of the equation. The other 50% of the targeting, the other 50% of the results come once we get that click. We're able to collectively take the best performing landing pages and campaigns that we're running across dozens of different niches and verticals to help you get back to a place where you're happy with your conversion rate faster. So, just to recap what we do, we're going to take control of your strategy, your messaging, we'll script out all of your ads for you, you shoot the raw videos, you send us the images, all the stuff shot on your iPhone for now, we then do all of the editing and build out this little bit of a flywheel for you where we can pull and create new assets as needed. We're then gonna run your ads, optimize your ads, send you weekly reports on how those ads are performing, and we make data-driven decisions every single week based off of what that data tells us. Okay, we're not gonna be emotional about this. Then we build and develop your landing pages, we optimize your landing pages, and try to maximize your conversion rate. That's our core package, and that's what Noah talked to you about.
Like, I can do it now, but I'm literally, I'm going to, I fear I'm going to choke myself out I don't wanna get to the point where I'm giving you money and then saying that I need to lower budgets because I can't meet demand. Like, that's my absolute biggest fear.
Understand. So, if that's what you feel you need, it's your business, man. I'll support you in that. I'm gonna speak to you friend to friend who's scaled and sold a golf brand and knows a lot about the golf industry. Right now really is the best time I would even say, you know, end of April, right around the Masters is probably the best time. But right now until kind of the middle to late summer is where we really want to be scaling your brand and your products. And in terms of, you know, I don't wanna have this worst fear come to happen. If that happens, that's actually a great thing. That's kind of the goal.
Yeah, I, no, I completely agree. Like, I want that to be the goal too, but it's more like, now you're crushing it. I need to find the cash to put into more printers, put into more material. Like, I can't buy more printers now because I can't sell any more than I can right now.
Yeah, so guess what? We preorder. We send emails to our customers saying, hey, we're a locally owned, like a US-based product.— like, be patient with us as we're trying to deliver. We're going to be shipping out in 2 to 3 weeks. I mean, dude, you gotta be more creative here. You're giving me excuses. And listen, this isn't because I'm trying to earn your business here. I'd like to work with you. I know we can— we're the team for you. But just friend to friend here, all I'm hearing are a bunch of excuses, man. So when he's like kind of talking about all of these excuses— they're really just excuses. He's really not getting to the root problem. Which is, hey, I'm a business owner with finite resources. I have to make sure that if I, whoever I work with, whatever team it is, that I'm gonna maximize my investment.
No, I'm not one to make excuses. I promise you I wanna scale my company as much as possible. Like where my attention needs to be right now, unfortunately, do I need to cruise control the ads? Yes, I know it's not something that I can, should, pump the brakes on, but it's like I physically have no other choices. I'm kind of in limbo.
So timelines, you need like a month? You said middle of June you'd be ready to rock?
45 days. 45 days.
So, okay, end of June.
Yeah, end of June I would say is going to be guaranteed. 30 to 45 days, I'd say by the end of that 30-day period, I got, I'll have a plan. Plenty of supply and filament, be able to properly scale on printers, um, and then cash flow should be at a, you know, a place where I know I can invest this amount of money, this amount of time, and then automate everything. But yeah, to confidently make this decision and give you my 100% attention, which I think you deserve, which we both deserve, um, yeah, I just need a little bit of time to get this fire put out.
Okay, cool. So this is the positive of talking with me, because I want to work with you, and I'm the CEO. I can do what I want to do here. Um, what we're going to do is I'm going to set you up today. I'm going to collect the first payment. What we're going to do is I'm not going to charge you your second payment until July 1st, 45 days from now. In that 45-day period All we're gonna be focusing on is getting ready the ads, the messaging, the scripting, all the landing pages, so we have a really good foundation to then launch with. So just consider I'm giving you an extra 2 weeks and a ton more extra ad creatives so that when you have everything ready to go, we're not waiting and then getting started, waiting another 2 weeks or 3 weeks to launch. We can actually launch the second You operationally are ready to go. Yeah. I like it. So yeah, I'm stoked to work with this guy because he made the right decision. So basically my day's going, it's going, man. Woke up a little bit late, slept in longer than I should have, morning routine was all jacked up, so I'm just kinda behind. Had another sales call you guys just watched, went way over, had to miss my other call. And then right now I've got like 5 minutes in 10 minutes, I gotta find, we're on the hunt for some Red Bulls that have just gone missing. They just disappeared. Did you guys see like, it was an Amazon package, anything from us? They said it got delivered to the mail room and I'm like, we don't have a mail room. I'm like, okay. Let me, it would've been out here if this is a mail room. That's definitely not it. It's just like some Red Bulls so I don't know where it could've gone. Check the other desk, like in the middle area, just around the big desk. I actually have it. Yo la miré arriba. Arriba? ¿A dónde? Aquí mismo. Ah, ella sabe dónde está. Vamos. Yo he estado buscando toda la semana para encontrarlo. Oh, I'm stoked, man. Let's go. Why would they have delivered it here? Aquí estamos. Gracias por todo. Nos vemos. Yeah, dude, these got delivered on May 8th, so I take it back. It hasn't been Tuesday. Been over a week. Do we have a box opener? He was not impressed by you. Yeah, I know. He said I was not impressed by me either. He said I had no clue what you guys even do. He's here to talk to Noah. I couldn't understand exactly what you're doing. It was a disaster. That's a little too far. That's a little— exactly. Did he take it a little too far? Take it a little too far, bro. Dude, I'd give my left nut to be able to eat one of these. But you wouldn't chew for it? No. Oh, that's actually good. That's actually good. Chance Houston, Color Express. Who set this one on my calendar? We're already clients of theirs. Who set that? Chance Houston. Chance Houston. Oh, it was Chance. He goes— I called him this morning, hey, you doing that? He's like, yeah, honestly, man, I've got a lot of fishing to do. This is my wife's business. He's retired. Yeah, he's like, yeah, I'm fishing right now. He's a baller. So just call my wife. So, okay, we can go ahead and cancel that, or cool, whatever you want to do. Unless— well, I would just say let Landon handle it. If she's expecting it, just call his wife. Call Jennifer. We have Jennifer's number. Yeah, I got it from him. Okay, call Jennifer and just say, hey, what's up? I, you know, Chance booked a Search Everywhere optimization call with Tanner today. It's just another service that we offer. It's SEO and getting found on AI LLM search. Okay. You know, but if you guys aren't interested in that, we don't even have the call, or Landon could just get you guys scheduled if that's something you want to do, right? I mean, like, I'm— I'm laughing at your fidget toys. Oh yeah, I'm sorry, I'm sorry that I booked that call. Kyle, I do like to play with knives. Funny story with this in my face is I'm actually OCD, if you guys didn't know. Well, you guys probably had a good idea. I'm OCD. Is this a self-diagnostic or— Oh no, no, I'm clinically 100%, like it's, it's, yeah, it's diagnosed. Like dude, I'm from a young age, like bro, I've had some serious issues. My parents are like, oh no, he just worries a lot. I'm like, what 5-year-old kid washes his hands so much that his hands crack and bleed and literally you have to put socks on his hands at night? So like, I don't get up every 2 seconds to go wash my hands in the middle of the night. Issues. But that's kind of— but one of the things about OCD, this is probably going to be great for the the documentary, is you have these really crazy intrusive invasive thoughts and the thoughts are so dark and so scary that what happens is you have a fear that's so irrational but you create a compulsive behavior to protect yourselves from basically doing that one thing. So let me just say that there was a really scary thought I had with a knife that I didn't touch knives for like a year. Like, I wouldn't touch a knife because I was afraid I was gonna murder somebody with it, literally. So the way my person said to get over it, my therapist, was go buy some knives, play with the knives. You expose yourself to the fear. If I'm afraid of that knife, I feel like I'm gonna like kill somebody with it, prove yourself that you don't, you can't. You know, you just grab the knife and you just keep it with you. You guys should go watch The Aviator. Have you seen that? No. Great movie. But it's about this guy who, it's a true story. His name is, what is his name? It's like some billionaire, you know, awesome entrepreneur and stuff, but literally had OCD so bad that it like destroyed his life. Look up who the Aviator was after. What's the guy's name? Howard Hughes. Howard Hughes. Howard Hughes. So it's about this guy named Howard Hughes, okay? Now Howard Hughes was so terrified of germs that he literally locked himself in his house. And would keep his hands inside of tissue boxes, wouldn't touch anything. But then simultaneously, he would go like fly in a plane to break like a plane speed record and come so close to dying. He like crashed his plane like multiple times. Like— That's weird. It's like, doesn't make sense, right? Like rationalize that, like you're so afraid of getting sick and dying, like the chances of that happening are so much slimmer than you than you getting in an airplane and like going down in a ball of flames. That's the thing about OCD, it doesn't make sense. So why would you be scared about, why would you be scared to touch knives and you wouldn't be scared to shoot guns? One thing that I've stopped doing, and I think it's a result, my business partner bought me one of these Remarkables. I like it a lot. I've had this Remarkable for, what is it, like probably 2 years now, and it's fantastic and I use it a ton. But before I got the Remarkable, I used to just get these Leuchtturm1917 A5 squared notebooks and what I would do in these is I would write the date and I would put down all of the things on my calendar, all the to-dos right here. And I write out my goals that I have for basically the entire quarter right here. But dude, it just reinforces it right here. Essentially every day when I come into the office, planning my days out. And I feel like it's just an absolute productivity hack. Absolutely, for me, something that is super helpful. With it being a physical pen, and you like get to cross it off, you get to mark it off, like the satisfaction of seeing that red line through something, dude, I don't know, it's like crack cocaine for me. So I honestly, I'm getting back in that routine, and I think it's something that every one of you should try. You know what to do on this one, right? Like, starting out with a new e-com product like this is gonna be really tough. Apparel, footwear, I mean, we're coming into one of the most competitive spaces. So if he's not down to spend and best case scenario break even for his first couple hundred orders, probably not going to be a good fit. Okay. Because dude, like, you're not going to go print and make $100,000 a month in profit on some boots. Yeah. So it's going to be a grind the first— 4, 5, 6 orders. Like he's not gonna be paying himself money, he's gonna be putting it back into his business, putting it back into inventory. So how serious is he about scaling this thing? 'Cause it's gonna be freaking hard right now.
Can I just tell him it's easy and close it?
Sure, you can do that too. Dude, it's so easy, if you're not doing $1 million a month by next month, like you suck. Overall today was a good day. Thought it was a productive day, got a lot done, got the new Red Bulls. In the fridge. That was a highlight of the day. Closed some deals. We're making a lot of progress and momentum on our new funnels, our new offers that we're running. Also major, major improvements into the fulfillment. Nothing hits— nothing hits on the drive home after a long day like some LRB, baby. Friday night, it was late, I was walking you home. I looked down to the gate and I was dreaming of the night. Wouldn't turn out right. That'd be kind of a funny outro. I was like singing and I've got a terrible voice. Kind of be funny?
