I think it's quite closed-minded to think, oh, if I take on an apprentice, it's going to take me ages to do the job because I'm explaining everything to him and it's all me, me, me. If you can just stop that and be open-minded and see the investment— the way that I'm doing it is probably the most expensive way of doing it. It will cost you about £12,000 a year in terms of salary for your trainee. It's a huge investment, really. So you have to make sure that it is the right person. Self-employment can be very lonely, and having an apprentice there— yes, they're a financial drain, Yes, they might annoy you with their lack of drive, but it's someone there and someone you can have conversations with and you can banter with.
If somebody was thinking about taking on an apprentice, like, if you're 3 months in, how would you know that you're on the right track?
You'll know with the person that you've employed, because with an apprentice, they're with you constantly at work. Arguably, you probably spend more time with your apprentice than you do your family.
