Every 21 minutes in the UK, a tradesperson has their tools stolen. That is a staggering statistic. But what's even more shocking is that 4 out of 5 tradespeople have been a victim at some point. Tool theft isn't just about the money, it's about lost work, delayed jobs, and the stress of trying to get back on your feet. Now, this is clearly a deep-rooted and complex problem. We aren't going to solve it in this video, but what we will show you is what you can practically do to better protect yourself and your tools. Your first line of defence is marking your tools. Thieves hate marked tools because they're harder to sell and easier to trace. You can start right now with a permanent marker or UV pen. Write your name, postcode, and phone number on everything. For a more permanent solution, engrave your details. For a visual deterrent, use brightly coloured paint. It makes your tools instantly recognisable and less attractive to thieves. Even better are advanced marking systems like Datatag or SelectaDNA. They use forensic DNA and tamper-proof tags to link your tools back to you. These brands have done research to suggest tools become 4 times less likely to be stolen and 6 times more likely to be recovered. Next is your van. It's the weakest link in your security chain, and you've probably seen videos of how quickly thieves can break in. One thing you can do is upgrade your locks to deadlocks or slam locks. You can install secure storage like VanVault, And consider deterrents like alarms, CCTV, and motion-activated lights near where you park your van overnight. And the simplest tip of all, if you can, take your tools out of your van overnight. Some other useful tips are to join a local trade group on Facebook to stay aware of local theft patterns and get tool insurance to play it safe. And that's all for today.
