A UK plumber describes working in Nepal, where apprentices get two weeks of training instead of two years. Core plumbing principles are universal, so the skills transferred easily despite language barriers. She found it incredibly rewarding and encourages others to volunteer internationally.
In Nepal, their plumbing training is 2 weeks. Our plumbing training is like 2 years. They'd done a project in the past and it didn't quite work out, so it was sort of, well, is there any chance any of the UK plumbers would like to come out and share their knowledge, work alongside the Nepalese?
What has it kind of done for you personally doing these kind of things?
Our skills are so transferable because although we was halfway across the world, we didn't speak the same language, and someone said, 'Run water,' and we said, 'Fine,' and and we did the plumbing. We was at home because we was plumbing. The principles are the same, water runs downhill. It's just executing that. It was an incredible experience and I'd highly recommend anyone to give it a go.
