Heat pumps are efficient, reaching 200% to 600% COP, but UK homes built for gas boilers can't use them cost-effectively. Electricity costs four times more than gas, so a heat pump needs COP of about 4 just to match current bills. Below that, switching raises costs for consumers.
So we have a challenge in the UK, which is that we've got older buildings with pipework and radiators that's been designed for gas boilers. And heat pumps can be anywhere between 200% or 600% efficient depending on their operating environment. 200% efficient sounds great until you realize that electricity in this country is 4 times the price of gas. So you need it to be running roughly 400% efficiently, otherwise you're going to be increasing your bills.
