Engineers often learn hard lessons about business only after hitting problems, like dealing with a customer who won't pay. Asking the right questions early, before you're forced to, beats learning what you don't know the painful way.
quite a nasty customer who doesn't want to pay them. One of the things that's been a great benefit to me over my career is, is the ability to ask the right questions at the right time. There's an old saying, you don't know what you don't know, and sometimes you need some exposure to different elements of the business. I think some people get that because they run into a problem, like something to do, like, for example, the terms and conditions of their quote are really bad and they're exposed to quite a nasty customer who doesn't want to pay them. So they're exposed to that part of the business, they are then forced to ask the question as opposed to asking the question in advance.
