The War on Happy People: Shame Slaying & Living Brave w/ Shoshanna Raven
19 Jun 2024 · 66 min
In this episode of the Makeshift Happen podcast, host Samantha Daly interviews holistic lifestyle and leadership coach Shoshanna Raven. The conversation traces Shoshanna’s personal transformation from a secret genital herpes diagnosis to building the Living Brave movement and an eight‑figure coaching business in four years. They explore how shame‑slaying, vulnerability, and embracing taboo topics like sex, money, and power can become catalysts for growth. Shoshanna shares stories from a recent Egypt retreat, a medicine‑man gender prediction, and her high‑risk pregnancy, illustrating how she lives "brave" by meeting fear head‑on and modeling authenticity for her community. The dialogue also covers navigating backlash, the limits of joy, the interplay of personal joy and professional success, and the importance of aligning business with whole‑person wellbeing. Interspersed are promotional segments for Samantha’s Top Tier Mastermind and Sold Out Stories Instagram‑Story training, as well as calls to action for reviews and listener engagement.

What's up, you guys? Welcome back to the podcast. Thank you so much for tuning in and for being here. I've got an amazing guest for you guys this week. I'm bringing on one of my friends, Shoshana Raven. Shosh and I first connected through the coaching space, and then we met and spent some time together in Egypt. She was on the Alchemy of Egypt trip with me, and we just had an amazing conversation. We go really deep. Shoshana is a Scorpio, and she's one of those people that loves deep philosophical conversations. She's really intelligent, and we just went all the way there. So I know you're gonna love this conversation. Shoshana Shoshana is a holistic lifestyle business leadership and love coach for heart-led visionaries and female entrepreneurs. And as a shame slayer, Shoshana speaks openly about taboos like sex, money, and power to liberate the truth. She launched her podcast Living Brave in 2019, where she opened up about her herpes status in hopes to break shame and stigma culture, inspire authentic connection, and liberate listeners to access their own personal power. And what began as a one-woman show with no intention to monetize grew organically into a multi-million dollar business in just 2 years and then to multi-million dollar months within 4 years. Shoshana now works with thousands of clients around the world, hosts sold-out global retreats, and runs a rockstar team. And she's on a mission to slay shame, tell the truth, and unlock your limitless potential through brave leadership, learning to walk with fear, and open the magical mystery of this wild human experience. In today's conversation, we talk about how Shosh went from zero to an 8-figure business in just 4 years, how being diagnosed with a highly stigmatized STI impacted her life and her business for the better, what living brave truly means and the birth of Shoshanna's movement, how to show up for yourself and your business when life gets really hard, and what to do when your happiness and success triggers backlash and hate, understanding the difference between being right and being free. And we also talk about some of the things things that we got up to in Egypt, how the medicine man ended up predicting the gender of Shoshanna's baby, and navigating entrepreneurship as a soon-to-be mom. We go so wide and deep in this conversation. I know you guys are going to love it, so let's dive right in. Welcome to the Makeshift Happen podcast. Which is why Top Tier Mastermind is designed to be a small, tight-knit space where you can actually drop in, feel seen, and make some really incredible badass entrepreneur friends. One of the most joyful, playful, give-no-fucks person I've ever met. The show is gonna love you. I know everyone can't wait to hear from you. I also feel like you are becoming such an icon in the coaching space. So I'm excited to share you with anyone who hasn't, you know, fully discovered your magic yet. We've kind of been in each other's orbits for a little while online, but then we finally got to meet in person in Egypt, which was so fun. So how are you? How are you feeling? How are you? How's life after Egypt for you?
I'm like, says the icon herself. I'm so happy to be here. And I had reached out before, like, let's Let's host each other on each other's podcast before Egypt. And we were like, you know what, let's actually just go on this crazy journey together and then the podcast will probably be better. So I'm happy that we waited and it's probably good that we waited because I feel like completely— pregnancy is funny. I was gonna text my sister today, like, imagine waking up every day just pumped with like 10 times the amount of hormones that you usually have in like the peak of your period cycle and you just don't know what you're gonna get. Like, it has been such a trip, and I honestly can't even believe I went to Egypt like feeling the way that I was feeling. So I'm feeling so much better. You know, that really is a piece of my personality that I am still just like, wow, shoosh. I am such a yes woman. You know, my dad was just visiting, and Christian's like, hey Dan, you want to go ice bath? He's like, Yeah, you know, I just took a shower. I'm like, he's just saying yes to everything. I'm like, this is where it comes from. This is why I went to Egypt with like the worst morning sickness of my life. And it was, it was a trip. It was a journey, but I feel like we, I didn't get to like, you know, really meet everyone in my fullest self, but it was still, still an awesome journey. I know that you went on a crazy transformation internally, externally, and I gotta listen to your podcast about it cuz it'll give me a different experience of Egypt than I had.
Yeah, I know, I know. I'm trusting that you got out of it everything that you needed. But it's funny looking back at the photos of you like laying on the floor in the airports. And then I found this photo in our shared file of when we were at the— after we had done that really hot and deep and dark ceremony with Sekhmet, and you were just kind of like laying on that stone outside of the temple, and I'm just like rubbing your head and like massaging you. You're like almost on your deathbed, like So, so crazy. But I'm really glad that we got to meet. And the— it's so fun now seeing that the medicine man was correct about the gender of your baby. Like, I wanted to ask you, because I obviously saw the video of the reveal, and then we were all in the comments like, holy shit, like, the medicine man called it. But I was wondering from your perspective, because we had been saying like, we're getting girl energy for you, I feel like you thought it was a girl. Like, were you up until the moment of the reveal like pretty certain still that it was a girl, or did you change or open your perspective more once the medicine man was like, no, it's definitely a boy? What was your, what was your feel? Okay, so I have something I think you're really gonna love, and your business is gonna love it even more. Do you want to steal the strategy I've been using to seduce premium buyers and sell out my offers on Instagram Stories? Chances are you're already posting, you're already making sales, but if your Instagram Stories aren't working as hard as you are, you're leaving money on the table. Sold out Stories is going to teach you exactly how to change that so that you can sell out any offer at any price point. And even high-caliber coaches miss this because selling on stories isn't about how much you post or how frequently you show up face to camera. It's about psychological sequencing. And the way you're posting right now might be giving the premium buyers in your audience the ick. Documenting your day and hoping it builds trust, posting look at me content and calling it authority, sharing client wins as soon as they drop in instead of strategically weaving them into a story selling sequence does designed to drive demand and convert sales. We both know that you're not here to learn how to show up more. You're here because you know your content could be converting faster and more effectively. Sold Out Stories is going to give you 5 high-converting story selling frameworks built specifically for premium buyer psychology. Inside, you'll get over 6 hours of deep dive video trainings, real IG story breakdowns, and live walkthroughs that show you exactly how to elevate your slides from authority building all the way to offer flow in than 10 slides. My clients have already been using these frameworks to pull 5-figure sales days while posting less. One client generated 14 premium leads from a single story sequence. Another sold out her event in under 6 hours with just 8 strategic story slides. No sales calls, no paid ads, just the right frameworks. That was wild. The one thing, it was like one of the one activities everyone's like, do you really want to go to this medicine man? He might say something that's gonna eff up the trip. And I'm like, this is living brave, you know? I like I don't go inside the pyramids, but I'm like, I will be going to this medicine man and he will tell me the truth. Like, I'm just so here for that kind of stuff. And he was actually so pleasant and amazing and had this fatherly energy, you know, sharing with all of us, no matter where you are in the world, no matter what's going on in your life, I just want you to think of me and know that someone loves you and send me whatever you need. And I just felt like that was the most beautiful fatherly message that you could give someone. So he was a gift. And I remember I had my hands on my belly, but I was only probably 11 weeks, so you couldn't really tell. So when I told him I'm pregnant, he's like, I know, in the most confident manner. Yes, boy, Horus baby, you know, like one of the, the Egyptian gods, the male gods. So honestly, my dad has always been a bit— bring him back into the mix— he's always been very intuitive, the kind of person, you know, has dreams and then meets someone and then guesses your birthday and then does remote viewing, like you lose something. And so he was kind of not really getting any strong hit. And then he started leaning towards girl. And I truly believe it's because, you know, I was wearing these clips in my hair, I have all pink on, everyone shows up, I'm very feminine, I'm very girly. And so it almost just felt like, you know, and where we've been sometimes informs where we think we're going. And it's like, I have all sisters, all cousins that are all female cousins. So it was kind of like maybe masking the— all the signs that were showing like, no, it's a boy. Because in the beginning, I really did feel like, okay, maybe I am having a boy. I don't know what that is. I've never had brothers. I've got like— my closest cousins are all girls. We are a family of all girls. But the closer it came to the reveal, I really just got in the, the pink energy. And it's almost like what happens when we kind of deeply desire something but we don't necessarily know if it's possible. I know it's like 50/50 chance for male or female, but you're really like, I don't know, can I really do that? So you kind of go to what's comfortable, right? And then it was just such a beautiful surprise. I was definitely shocked. Christian nailed that surprise, like so happy, arms up in the air, like he could make you cry. And I just had a full body spasm. He's like, you tried, you said you wanted to like embrace after and you tried to like run away from me. I'm like, I think I blacked out. I don't know what happened. I was like, I need to be by myself. It was like everyone's screaming. And so yeah, I think that ultimately it's I mean, I'm so— I feel so blessed with anything, but it feels like really exciting, really new, and honestly something I really want to experience in my life. So deep desire manifested.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I love that. I know I was like, I've watched the video 50 times and I— it's so true. Like when Christian like opens his arms, it's like, it's, oh, it's, it's just like a moment of like reverence of like really feeling that it's, that it's real and that it's happening and that, you know, you guys have a son on the way. Like, I was literally like crying like watching it. So I'm so happy for you and I'm really, really excited for you to bring life into the world. You guys are going to be amazing parents. So I want to talk about this personality trait that you alluded to and, and the whole kind of idea behind your brand. And obviously your company is called Living Brave. So what does Living Brave really mean to you and how did it become such a pillar of your message and your movement.
You know, I remember being in Denver running around Cheeseman Park, and I knew I really wanted to launch this podcast. At the time, the word coach was still like, who the heck do I think I am? You know, like, I'm a life coach. It just felt like I— that, that could never be me. But I knew that I had a story to share, and it was really about overcoming shame and transmuting shame into power and taking anything that's ever happened to you in your life and deciding to start shifting the way that you see it and actually use maybe the worst thing that ever happened to you as this catalyst to be the best thing that ever happened to you. Like, I'm a storyteller, so to be able to look at your own story and see it as this raw material to create meaning and magic in what was once maybe painful, mundane, or ordinary— that's my favorite thing. And so once I realized how, how I could do that with my story, Living Brave really just started as a podcast where I wanted to talk about what I had done with something as big as genital herpes, which was my, one of my biggest fears. I thought my life was over, you know, everything came crashing and burning. I never thought, you know, genital herpes is gonna heal you from the inside out, make you a confident person, have you fall in love and become a multi-millionaire. It was like, oh fuck, you know, I had it coming for me. You know, I attracted this into my life. If only people found out the truth about me. And so the podcast really started, I was like, is it called Authentic Humans? Is it called Living Authentic? Is it called Living Brave? And it's funny because You know, when you start to share and when you start to build the community and when all of these different principles start to come in and get housed underneath this entire world you create and more than a brand and like your movement and just this, this place that people go and there's a shared language, it colors the words Living Brave. But in the beginning it's like, okay, maybe that'll work, you know, like Living Brave, we'll see. And really for me it was being approach-oriented in life, you know, because we hear there's two ways to approach life. You can either or to go about living your life. You can either avoid your fears and you can either live in the avoidance of feeling, you know, so many people walking around numbing, trying to kind of play safe and make sure nothing bad happens. And then there's a whole other way of living, which is really approaching life. It's like, okay, that scares me. Let's go do it. Okay, that sounds like really uncomfortable. Let's try it out. I don't know how to do that yet. Well, Let's figure it out. You know, I— that to me is like, can I just meet the moment? And why I feel like Living Brave kind of took off so fast was that I went to the hardest thing for me, you know. And I truly believe that things happen in life for us to become someone more fuller, richer, deeper, more authentic in the process. And so for me, HSV just— it really shattered my entire world, which was a blessing at the time. But it unearthed a lot inside of me. And sometimes things unearth really beautiful qualities within us, like resiliency and kindness and compassion and courage. And sometimes they reveal things about ourselves that we might not want to look at, like insecurity and shame and feelings of envy or self-deception. And so I saw a lot of shadows when I was diagnosed with um, a highly stigmatized STI in which 1 in 4, 1 in 4 New Yorkers has HSV. 2 in 3 people have HSV-1. And, you know, 1 in 2 women will have an STI before age 25. And so it really had me thinking, if this is breaking me, what do I actually believe about myself? Because life often gives us situations that unearth feelings, beliefs, um, stories that were just lodged very, very deep underneath the surface. Was I already afraid of people knowing truth about me? Did I already feel like maybe I wasn't enough? I already fear that maybe no one would love me, you know? Did I already think maybe I was dirty and gross and disgusting? And so it was a really big catalyst for a lot of self-inquiry and going beyond the surface level, uh, yoga that I had done, which I still— yoga was my gateway in, but— and that you're more than your mind and your body and kind of transcend the human experience. It was like slap in the face. Listen, you still have a human experience. You've got to work on your story, you've got to shift your perspective on your past, and you've got to reimagine what's possible for you in the future. And for me, the greatest sense of, of healing and transmuting shame was through the power of vulnerability. So when I think of living brave, a lot of people think about like jumping out of airplanes, and for me it was really through the power of vulnerability and seeking connection and really benefiting from real human connection, truth-telling, and how powerful that can be, you know, that can override the fear of rejection, that can override all of the doubts and insecurities. Just having that one conversation with someone where you're staring at another human, you're bearing your heart, and it feels like you're finally being seen for the first time. And they can open up and be real with you because life is freaking hard and challenging and shit happens. And we're floating on a ball in outer space. Like the only way to transform is to die and be reborn. And to walk into the unknown. Like, it's crazy. It's so crazy, right? And so to share that experience together and then to be able to celebrate when things are really good and to be in your joy for no reason because holy shit, you've walked through some fires— like, that's really what Living Brave means to me. Of course, it's about the unapologetic joy and celebration, but it's also about living in that really uncomfortable place that demands respect because so many people want the benefits of transformation, but they don't want be in the ring of fire, which is where transformation happens. You know, one of my mentors, Mandy Keen, said to me recently, like, shush, there's, there's no bumper sticker you'll ever find that says, I'd rather be in transformation. Like, I'd rather be fishing. Like, I'd rather be in the depths of transformation, please. Like, no one ever says that. And so to live there, that's really what living brave means to me.
Yeah. So beautiful. I just had a conversation with someone else today who was like, none of us would really, you know, raise our hands and stand up and be like, yeah, Yes, put me in, in the middle of a transformation, please, because you know what comes with that. But I think also a lot of your— like, you have so much depth to you, and you're a Scorpio, and like, we see that so much in, you know, you desire like those deeper conversations. The taboo is kind of like where you exist and where you thrive. And when I was doing my Egypt series, I was even realizing, you know, certain things about myself in that way of like, I was terrified to get on that, on that hot air balloon. And I was just thinking about you, you know, you're so early in your pregnancy, so sick, it's 4 in the morning and we're like, sign us up. Fuck yeah, we'll get on a balloon and float through the sky. Um, and you know, the medicine man and all these things. And I just was realizing, I guess that is kind of a personality trait that I also have where I'm just kind of like, like, yeah, this might be hard, but like, I wanna do it. It's almost like I remember when I was younger and like way less into personal development and didn't have any of the language to understand like self-awareness or any of that, that any of that stuff. Like we would say in college, like, do it for the story. And I feel like now, you know, at this stage, I'm like, do it for the story of your life, of your transformation. Like, I'm always thinking, who do I want to be in this moment? You know, I get to choose to be the old version of me, or a quieter version of me, or a more timid, scared, fearful version of me that's seeking safety or is letting scarcity win. Or I could choose to be the brave version of me. I could choose to be the version of me that becomes the main character of this story, that has something to say afterwards. After the experience, you know, a story pours out of you and you've transmuted something and you have this big realization and these ahas. And I think that's a huge part of mentorship too, is like being, being that person, you know, being the person that's willing to walk through the fire, to go first, to move through the transformations, to say yes to these types of things so that you can evolve at a rapid pace and be able to help other people do the same thing. So yeah, I just loved witnessing you in that. And I think, you know, you even going to Egypt was an example of that, as we said, of like, I don't know how you're here or why you're here, but it's— yeah, it's, it's living brave. And one of the things that I know you also talk about a lot, like, yes, there's the shame slaying and the vulnerability of sharing those like taboo topics, whether it's, you know, about the STI or it's about money and wealth or success or whatever. But there's this real vulnerability in being joyful, in being in celebration, of being in ease, even of like having things be really great in your life and really beautiful and, and non-confrontational and, and to not have conflict and to not have drama and to, to feel like safe in sharing that because you know that the right people will be able to receive it. There's a lot of people that can't hold joy. There's a lot of people that can't receive your celebration or your happiness or your ease. And I'm sure you've experienced those projections, especially as, you know, we all do kind of in the online space, but especially as you get bigger and become more revolutionary and, you know, you become this icon and you're making lots of money and you become really successful. I think that gets even more heightened. So I'd love to hear you talk about your experience with, with that and, you know, the vulnerability of sharing joy. Yeah, absolutely. Well, I love that you brought up that seeing your life as a story and you being the main character, you know, that is the big— one of the biggest shifts that you can make as a human being. And especially when we choose a path of being a leader, right? Whether you're a mentor or a coach or you're leading, you're really choosing to model. And I think as a personal brand, and especially on the path of mentorship, what we're doing is we've made ourselves the main character, not just of our own movie but of this whole movement. Like, I'm the living, breathing representation of my core values. And so in life, people have often asked me like, how do you show up in living brave when life is lifing? You know, like when you're going through a heartbreak. I went through really what to me was the biggest heartbreak of my life in 2021. How do you show up during that? You know, when the person that you thought you were going to be with tells you it's— you're not the one and walks out the door in one day, you know, and you sell all of your stuff and don't know where you're going, and it's like this whole, this, this whole vision of your life crumbles. How do you still show up in your business? How do you show up when you feel like you're throwing up every single day and like you can't find your life force? How do you show up when stuff is happening with your family? How do you show up when there's a hate threat about you on the internet? How do you show up when relationships that you thought were going to be there forever are changing because you're changing? And that's part of growth, right? Relationship shifting and ebbs and flows. And I feel like what people don't ask enough is like, how do you move through hard things in life? Because the way that I move through hard things in life is through living brave. It's like the opposite question. Like, how do I show up? How do I not? Because this is what gets me through that. You know, Robert Greene is someone that I love and he talks a lot about mastery and the path of purpose and mastery and really how for him and for so many people on that path where it's more than a career, you know, it's more than a job. A job is just something you do for a paycheck. A career is something you do to advance. But something that's a soul calling. It's like it gives you life, it gives you energy, it feels like it chose you, and it really anchors you in the ebbs and flows of life. You know, the moment that I woke up, I had a coaching call the day after my heartbreak, and I remember my mentor at the time was like, "Chose, I know you don't want to hear this, but this is so on brand, and you're probably going to teach people about this one day." It's like, I know, I hate knowing that because it hurts so bad. You know, I felt like the the, the pain of a heartbreak is like breaking a leg. It was— I couldn't walk. I was crying in fetal position for 7 hours the day before. And just to know that I had a purpose and I was really the main character— I'm a writer, so I am the main character. I have a brand, I am the main character. I'm a leader, I am the main character. I put myself there for me. Like, this is, this is for me. So I love that you shared that because it's really empowering to know that you are always authoring your story. Then every single moment, you can separate yourself from the moment. You can serve yourself like a little bird on a tree. It's like, what does she do next? What do you say next? You know? And so much of the time when we talk about— you had mentioned the Jedi skills, really that's leadership skills and understanding energetics. So many people are living in life as a reaction to the lowest common denominator available to them. Speaking of happiness, right? And when I talk about like the Jedi ninja, Jedi leadership stuff, it's really understanding that life is responding to you and that you don't have to be a victim to circumstances in your life. Like, of course there are conditions that make it so much easier to thrive and to be happy, and please set up those conditions in your life. But if we can't hold a celebration because we tell someone we can feel their judgment, or if we're having an amazing day dancing in the car and then someone flicks us off and gets road rage, and we're like, well, today's ruined— it's like, what kind of power do we hold within ourselves? You know, we are authoring this story. And so that's where this really comes in, of deciding to be joyful and deciding to be relaxed and deciding to find ease even though life is really hard sometimes. How, how can I surprise myself and others with how I show up in this moment? Like, what if there's an infinite available to me in this moment right now, and there's no reason to— there's no reason really to be extraordinarily happy besides the fact that I've, you know, walked myself through every fire I've been through, that I am somehow existing on this earth as like this miracle in this moment, that there's infinite potential available to me, that I can just smile and make myself feel happier. So if I can do anything right now, can I at least be happy? Maybe I'll dance, maybe I'll crack up for no reason. And that to me is such a gift to a world in which there is so much pain and there's so many people who convinced themselves that, you know, there's nothing really better out there for them. They should just be grateful for what they have, even if they feel like they're dying on the inside. Because having more and asking for more while also being absolutely grateful for everything in your life has been looked at and named as obscene. Like, it has been obscene, ungodly. You know, when we look at the level in which we allow ourselves and other people to reach reach success and power and influence, you'll notice even in the women's empowerment space, it's like, yay, be a millionaire! Yay, have a $10K month! Like, yes, I have this much influence! Yes, be, be that happy! But why are you dancing like that? Like, that's a little too much. I think that's a little too much skin. I mean, at this point, why do you need more? Why? Like, please stop sharing your Stripe screenshots. Please stop sharing your client wins. Please, like, just stop. Just go back in your cage and be a little less and stop making us all feel bad about ourselves. Rather than asking ourselves, what about someone else and their power and their joy makes us feel so uncomfortable? And I feel like that line from, "This person's so inspiring," which often happens when we give someone that permission to be successful through all their pain and all of their shame, that's what we do. There's a fine line where it goes from, "Oh my God, yeah, this is so inspiring," to a little judgy, little triggered, little bit of projection. And that line is exactly where we're blocking ourselves. That line is our max threshold. Of success and joy for ourselves. Because if we limit others and we police others, we're gonna do that for ourselves. And so I know that I am where I am today because there were really amazing, brilliant women who decided that they'd crack some codes and they were gonna share about it and celebrate. And it just blasted through pathways of possibility for me. Like, I have vivid memories of mentors or writing that I read, and I was like, holy shit, like, that's possible? Wait, I think I'm building something crazy. Like, it was just someone else opening that up for me, and what that's done for me and my family— and it's so beyond a financial milestone. I know that when I'm happy and when I'm joyful— and that's not 24/7, but when I am— I really like to amplify that and share it with people. That there are people who tell me all the time, God, I used to be like that, you know? Like, I have a reel where I'm paying for, for this lunch on my retreat in Ibiza And I remember one of my clients, she's maybe in her 40s or 50s, and she's like, I wanted to work with you because I saw that reel and I like, I used to be like that. Like somewhere along the line I let life really harden me and I've lost that spark and I've lost that joy. And I know that it, I know that it exists within me. And so I know that that's a gift to the world. And so I don't go around protecting people's triggers and fears because they're going to be triggered by somebody else. You know, we have to look at as leaders, as mentors, even with our own clients. I've had to overcome codependency patterns and patterns that stem from my own insecurity. But I don't want to make people feel uncomfortable. Oh, I don't want to make people feel this way, rather than seeing that their experience is their own responsibility and that I would rather protect their dreams and potential rather than their fears and their triggers. My job in this world is not to protect other people's fears and triggers. I'm here to to like spread, spread light and goodness in the world. And so it's going to take being really secure within myself, because when we shine and when we're a little controversial and a little weird and a little out there, which is really the only way to gain influence— and, you know, like, that's the only way you're going to build a platform is being a little weird, you know, is standing out— to think that we're only going to receive, you know, the most positive feedback is, I think, what also holds people back from ever creating anything significant, because that's not the case. You gotta celebrate. They say congratulations on your first hater for a reason.
Yeah, totally. I, I think it's so true that we have— there's, there's this limit to how much joy or celebration or wealth or overflow or ease or whatever that, that we're willing to be happy for other people for. And it's just interesting to notice what that limit is within yourself as you're talking about, because that's your opportunity for growth. Right. Is, is becoming radically responsible and curious and honest with yourself about where you hit that threshold of like, okay, you know, I really liked this person and I was happy for her. And then I started to feel like it was too much, or I started to feel like it was over the top, or I started to feel like she was unrelatable, or I started to feel like, you know, she lost touch and, and, and where that kind of line is and just being willing to get curious with ourselves about what that means. And how, how it's inviting us into a deeper level of growth and, and transformation. And I think, you know, it takes a lot of— it takes a lot of bravery, it takes a lot of courage to continue, because it would be so easy for you to be like, well, I don't, I don't need this. I don't need people's projections. I don't need, you know, these hateful messages. I don't need these threads being made about me. Like, I'll just, I'll just shrink. I'll just go— I'll be quieter. Like, I won't share as much. I won't talk about the money it would be easier on your life and your emotions and, and whatever. Um, why is it important to you that you don't choose the easiest route?
Yeah, oh my gosh, even hearing that, it would kill me. It would literally kill me not to be myself, you know. It's so— I, I can't even imagine the— it's when you find, when you find your true expression connection. Like, when you find art, when you build a community of people you genuinely, like, want to be in connection with, you know? And God, just the, the joy of really being yourself. I truly feel like the rarest commodity on planet Earth is someone who truly loves and accepts themselves. And I'm not here saying every— I never judge myself, like, I never have moments of doubt and fear. I don't trust anybody who says that, but But to really know, like, God, yeah, I do love myself. I am really proud of myself, and I like who I am. And, you know, I look in the mirror and I like who's looking back at me, and I feel like I'm doing life with my best friend, you know. And I love going on solo dates with myself. That's such an accomplishment. That— what does it say about my relationship with myself if I'm willing to dim who I am for other people? That's not a very strong relationship with myself. That's still a codependent relationship. That's still sourcing. And it's okay, we're human. We're gonna get validation from compliments and likes. And like, don't make yourself wrong for any of that. I think we're all going to have multiple drivers within ourselves. Why am I posting this? I want validation. Yeah. I want connection. Yeah. I want to self-express. I want to serve. There's so many things. Why did I buy this watch? It's freaking beautiful and I see it as art. I don't know, do I want status? Maybe I've got shadowy parts within myself. Yeah. Do I like I don't have— there's— it doesn't have to be either or. There are probably so many— there's so many drivers to be understanding of, like, who we are and why we do things and why we don't do things. It wouldn't be easier for me to live my life as a shell of myself at this point after getting this far. And so, yeah, that's what I would say. It really doesn't matter. Christian always helps me out too. I have an awesome partner who comes in with a very logical brain, and whenever things happen, I know beautiful things happen every day, but our mind is here to keep us safe. So it really overemphasizes the hard stuff and maybe the negative comments that you get. I think seeing the things that stick to you are sticking to you because you have a wound match. If someone looked at me in the eyes and said, you are disgusting that you talk about herpes and you clearly only want attention or whatever, the meanest things that they could say, no one's gonna love you, you're gross. I would feel nothing, like truly nothing but compassion, nothing but understanding, because that's really not, not the truth. But if someone said to me, you know, maybe something else, and it really, it really stuck, that for me would show me that there's something within me that maybe fears that that's true. Maybe something within me that is holding a deep shadow. Whenever you look at someone like, I would never do that, that's so not me— whatever's so not you is your shadow, you know, the part of you that is unwilling to accept that you are everything.
So true. I've heard an analogy before where it's like— or maybe it was a video, I can't remember— but it's like someone's wearing like an orange shirt and the person comes up and they're like, your blue shirt is so ugly, it looks so bad on you, it doesn't even fit you, like what the fuck? And the person is like, my shirt's orange, my shirt's not blue. And the illustration is about like when you— if you really believed that things weren't true about you, you wouldn't become reactive, and you wouldn't have that kind of like emotionally intense experience or that rising inside of you. And so it, you know, just goes to show exactly what you said, which is when those things stick to us, when, when those, those words or those comments or those things really activate us, sometimes it is an indication that there's a part of us that's wondering like, maybe that is true about me, like maybe, or maybe that it's somewhat true, or, you know, maybe more people think that. And, and so there's depth there and there's something to uncover and look at.
Yeah, this stuff is really vulnerable. I've gotta be honest because we're all in this process. It's so easy sometimes to make it about something else. Like for me, if I have that moment of like, I don't know if I like that person, or like, I don't know, they're celebrating and I feel mm within myself depending I'm having a bad day. Like they didn't change, I changed, right? To, to be with ourselves in that moment, be like, what if it's me? What if I'm insecure? You know, what if I'm— what if this is a part of me that I feel like maybe I'm missing, or, you know, that isn't going to happen for me, and I'm feeling bad for myself and I'm making it this random person's fault? Like, that's so tough, you guys. So to do that, it's like, it's really brave. It's so brave. Oh my gosh. To be able to look at ourselves and to see ourselves. Because it's happening for me every day, to, to look at where we limit our own joy, to look at the fact that, you know, maybe this joyful, happy person dancing on the internet isn't fake. They're not trying to prove anything. Who fucking cares? It literally doesn't matter. But the reaction within us— why are— why don't we allow ourselves to feel that, you know? And I'm so hormonal with the pregnancy. I was rereading Untamed last night by Glennon Doyle, um, because it's really a style I want to write my book in. I've started writing my book, and I am like sobbing. I am hysterically crying at this one piece because she's talking about the ache, you know, this ache that we all have within ourselves where we go— we're having a beautiful moment and we just feel this ache on the inside. Like, what if, what if it leaves? Like, you know, we're looking at our cat, we're like, that's so cute, how many years does she have left? You know, we're— it's this, it's this feeling of everything's going to be taken away from me. Don't get too excited. Don't get your hopes up, you know. And I felt this so much because I have a high-risk pregnancy. I convinced myself for a decade that I could never have kids. I was so shocked to get pregnant. And it was an interesting experience of sharing with people, especially my family was really nervous about it. And they're like, well, at least you know you can get pregnant. Like, it wasn't like you're having a baby. It was like, well, we'll see. And I was like, okay. And I could feel like no one was really allowing themselves to go there, right? Why? Because that ache we feel on the inside. And the part of the book I started just hysterically crying in because I saw myself in it. Even though, yeah, I'm so happy and joyful and that's a huge part of my mission, like, I'm, I'm still a human. I still close off because I'm afraid of getting hurt, right? I still close off, say, with your parents or the people you love the most. It's like, I love them the most. Why sometimes is it so hard to connect in those moments? I really want to connect. Why can't I just feel like endless love and gratitude in this moment? And what I was really realizing when I was reading about the ache as she's saying goodbye to her grandmother on her deathbed and feeling the ache so strongly and feeling the love so strongly and seeing the whole lineage and seeing the whole life cycle of what inevitably happens— life and death and rebirth— and knowing, like, she's looking at her mom and how this process will continue to carry out and just feeling immense love and the memories and just knowing that, that, that ache that we feel, in the avoidance of it, we cut ourselves off from everything beautiful. And when we just meet it and we're able to like love so deeply and feel so deeply and know that that, that grief, that ache, that feeling of being so deeply human is just showing us how much capacity we really have to love, you know. And it's, it's just, it shows us that we love so hard and that really allowing ourselves to go there, that's the beauty of it. And so I know, and I can see in myself where I still cut myself off from feeling immense love, immense joy, immense gratitude in every moment. Because the duality and the flip side and being a human, it can be so much to really feel it all that we just numb a little bit. And then it feels so foreign to see someone else in that expression. It feels almost threatening, and it feels like I don't want to look at why I've done this to myself. And so it was a huge breakthrough of just seeing like, where have I let the egg cut me off from even the most, the most profound connection with the people I love the most because I love them so much.
Yeah, I think there's a lot of people that are disconnected from the depth, depths of their emotions. They're suppressing— they feel the tears rising or the intensity of their experience, the intensity of love that they feel for someone, and it scares them because it's connected to the fear of losing that or having it be taken away or ruining the moment. And so we, we swallow it and we push it down. And yeah, I think there's a real art in being able to live with a wide open heart and to really be able to show up ready for those big emotions with arms wide open. Like, I have such a soft center, so I'm crying all the time. We're not afraid of crying over here. Um, but I know that there's a lot of people that are, that are scared of that side of themselves they're scared of the, the big emotions, or even the, the anger, or the sadness, or the grief, or, or any of it. And I think, you know, beautiful representation of you being so wanting to live so open-hearted and, and so fully is the fact that you did decide to share your pregnancy so, so early on, even knowing that there's, you know, a high risk that you could miscarry or something could go wrong. Like, that's just not who you are to try to shrink and carry that by yourself.
Yeah, absolutely. And you know, to be someone who's like, I'm so here to share the joy and the celebration. I also know that I've built this house, I've built this community, I've built this business not to hold it because it— and like to make it feel this thing that I have to show up to. I built this house so I can live in it. Like, I built my life so I can live inside of it. When I'm going through hard stuff, I want my people there. Like, I want to tell people what's happening with me because no matter what happens, I want to be able to model through it. I want to be able to receive support through it. Like, everything is that symbiotic relationship. And when we look at everything through the lens of relationship, which is business, you know, it's built on intimacy and, and time and emotional connection and trust. And so trust is like going through everything together, you know, going through the highs and going through the lows. And that doesn't mean we need to share everything on social media, you know. Of course, there's some relationships— like, my relationship with my partner is going to be closer, and I'm going to tell him more, and we're going to have more private busy in my relationship with, with my community. But there is a level of understanding what makes real trust and what makes real connection. And for me, that's what makes life so beautiful and why I love, I love what I do. So I just truly love what you shared about being someone who feels so much and why I love the art of leadership and the art of self-development and the art of energetics is I think that a lot of women haven't been taught, um, like feminine maturity. Like, you know, not just to be like in our joy and our magnetism and our expression, to be someone who's safe to be around emotionally, who takes responsibility for her own feelings, who knows that feelings are not fact and doesn't create stories and loops inside of feelings and just practice feeling bad. I think a lot of the times feeling our feelings has people people just practicing feeling hard shit, and it doesn't actually help people. But to understand how to transmute feeling and how to move through feeling and how to artfully create story around what's feeling good and expansive and see that as the truth and make decisions in your life from that space, know that that is like true self. That's why it feels so good in your body, it's so expansive. And when we feel contracted and we're having a psychological experience, to understand too that's not wrong, that's not bad. But when I create a story around what it means about me that I have no friends, that the best is in the past, that, you know, all of these things to explain how I'm feeling, I get stuck and I sink and I sink and I sink and I sink and I sabotage. And I create a story that validates a belief. And sometimes you'd rather be right than be free, you know, and be and hold a different perspective. And so this whole world of feeling and emotion and energetics and being someone who's okay being disappointed, who's okay being rejected. I think a lot of teaching on the internet is like, how do you overcome imposter syndrome? Over— how do you never get rejected? My clients never get objections on sales calls. Or like, how do you just never— how, how do I make sure people don't not like me? You know, like, but that's not it. I would rather be real with people and be like, I want to help you become the kind of person that no matter what, you're okay. That no matter no matter what, actually be— you refine yourself. That no matter what, every story makes you a richer, deeper, wealthier human being. You know, that's the kind of person that, that I'm aspiring to be every day, is not someone who avoids hard stuff in life. It's like Glennon in my head, we can do hard things. So yeah, one of my clients, Shayna Raskin, I love her so much. She says she's a somatic teacher, like, I didn't get here I, I didn't get here by not feeling. Like, I got here by getting good at feeling. Like, I, I got here by getting good at feeling. And for me, it's like, that's everything. I'm getting good at being— can we just get better at being a human and sometimes epically fail at it and not feel like we're not embodied and we're not who we say we are? Because we have the very refreshing feminine breakdown from now and again.
So true. I want to underscore the point about some people would rather be right than be free, because I mean, they've, they've proven like you can become addicted to emotions no matter what they are, whether they're positive or negative. And I think there's a lot of people that are addicted to those emotions and feeling and, and the stories that are attached to them and feeling like, you know, if you tell yourself something enough times, it becomes part of your identity in your self-concept, and you're never going to make your subconscious a liar. So if you believe that to be true about yourself on a subconscious level, you will always end up performing, behaving, moving through the world in a way where you get to prove yourself right and you get to see that that's true. And that perpetuates that cycle of, of being addicted to these, uh, harder or lower vibrational emotions. And I think there's a lot of people that need to hear that, whether it's like for themselves or for the people in their lives, or even just to understand like how this happens and, and why it gets perpetuated, but that we get to be the lighthouses for so many people in our communities and our audiences and, and in our lives of showing that there is another way. And that at any moment, any day, you can choose to change your thoughts and you can choose to change the stories that you tell yourself and how you perceive yourself and the world around you. Like, you know, hello, personal development. That's why all of us are sitting here on podcasts with brands and as mentors because we're like, oh my God, there's another way.
Like, holy shit.
And we just wanna share it with people. And so I think we get to, we get to be those lighthouses of just being the beacon of like, yes, life is hard and there's another way. We get to change the way that we see things. We get to change the way that we see ourselves and allow that to be this beautiful ripple effect of the lives that we build and the relationships that we cultivate and the careers and the money that we steward and the people that we impact around us. Us and the love and the generosity that we're able to give. And it just gets to ripple out into absolutely everything that we do and who we are. And I know for you, like your journey to like, this wasn't always your story of like so comfortable with wealth, so comfortable with the taboos, like, you know, knowing that you would, you would be this, you know, wealthy woman and your journey to success is, is really fun to look at because it's like, um, it, it looks really fast. Fast, but there's so many evolutions that had to take place in that time frame in order for you to, to be sitting here where you are now. So I'd love for us to just kind of go into that like journey of, you know, zero to eight figures in 4 years. And for the person that's like, what the fuck, how is that even possible? Can you give like a little recap or a peek behind the curtain of this incredible ride to success and, and who you were then and how that, how that transformed into into who you are now.
Yeah, I love— first of all, I'm just so happy to be doing this podcast with you. This is so fun. And the fact that we're podcasting, we have these brands, I don't know what day it is, like, I don't know, I'm going to get a prenatal massage after this, like, and this doesn't mean that there aren't, like, and not everyone would like this job. There's like hard stuff you have to do, but you get to a point and you're like, God, life is so good, I created this. It's not because we like learned how to content block, you know, it's like, oh, we You know, it's not because like we have this offer formula that no one else has on how to create an irresistible offer. Like, this is totally not it. It's like, it's becoming the kind of person who is able to find creative solutions, to just go execute on ideas and keep experimenting and keep growing and, and be someone that other people want to follow. And I think it's— I like to simplify stuff. So going to the 8 figures in 4 years and oh my gosh, like It's like, you know, when I look at even something like how do you call in a high-level client, you know, it's like you don't trick people. There's nothing you're gonna say in your marketing. Like you become someone that someone at another level wants to work with because you've been through things that they wanna learn from. And we're very intuitive, energetic people. You know, you hang out with someone like, I really like them. You listen to something, you're like, there's something about the way that they said that. But someone else could say it the same way and you're like, something weird's happening there and I'm not sure why. But I'm not going any further. And that's really embodiment. There is something energetically happening. We, we feel things within people. And often when I look back on big growth spurts in Living Brave, it's like, ah, I was really feeling it. Like it was truth and heart and embodied wealth. And it wasn't necessarily what I did, but the context in which I did it, right? And I think a lot of the times when we try to do the same business strategy again and again and again, someone comes in and tells you this is the way that you're gonna sell out your offer, but they know nothing about the context of your community and who you are and what's exciting for you and what's empowering for you. It doesn't take into account, like, well, why this worked for Shosh is because it felt really innovative and it felt really edgy and it felt really brave and people were ready for it. And the way she had nurtured people and the connections that she had built and the fire that she had just walked herself through that everybody watched, and then introduced this, you know, it was like, it's so— what feels life-giving for you? What do you actually have space for structurally, emotionally, spiritually in your Hey, if it doesn't matter how much I do, when I don't actually have space or want more clients, I will not attract them. And the second that I'm like, okay, you know, if someone comes to me and they're like, so I'm really burnt out, I'm really stressed out, but I want more one-to-one clients, but I have no space on my calendar. I'm like, this doesn't add up at all. Like, um, there's, I don't know, there's something else. Or at the end of a call, someone's like, yeah, so actually my relationship is going to shit and I don't know if we're gonna stay together. And at the end of a call about how business maybe isn't— it's a first call, business isn't really where they want it to be. And what's happening, I'm trying to understand, at the end they drop the bomb that everything in their lives is out of alignment, but they're showing a different picture online and they feel like a fraud. It's like, we should have talked about that first, you know, because everything is connected. And so really, I talk about growth as, as the whole person, growth as the whole woman, because your business, your leadership grows in the context of your whole life. And I mean, there's so many aspects to the zero to eight figures in four years but I'll just give you a little anecdote where yesterday my partner and I, who's very logical and he works within the realms of funnels and ads, and we have similar minds that we go about it in a completely different way. So we actually have very similar skill sets but different approaches. So he's like marketing and, and he loves human psychology, but he goes about it in, in a different way than me. And so his dad has a friend who wants to start a business helping people become sober. He wants to have a call with us. He wants to learn how to do this online business thing. And Christian's like, should I just have him read these books and then talk to me? Like, you know, I don't know what we're even gonna talk about on the first call. And I was like, well, what would— he's like, what would you say to this guy? I'm like, well, I would tell him to just whatever social media platform he's using, go on his Facebook page, go on his LinkedIn and just share about his journey through sobriety. And then tell people that they're gonna start to see a lot more about his journey around sobriety. And that he's going to be inviting people into coaching and mentorship experiences, and he's really excited, and he's starting a new venture, and to maybe do a class giving value to people, helping them have breakthroughs, and inviting them to talk to him about the offer and continue to nurture his, his audience organically. And Christian's like, yeah, okay, see, this is, this is why he's like, I was gonna tell him about an opt-in page. Like, Christian literally is like gonna teach about an opt-in page, trap traffic, product. He was like, no, literally, he's like, I'm gonna teach him about how there's product, traffic, an opt-in page. I'm like, really? Because I would just tell him to go online and literally just say, hey, I'm doing this now, and start to build real relationships with people and trust with people and just invite them into experiences he creates. And, you know, the, the word that popped up in my mind was permission. Like, why things have gone— they have gone fast, like, they really have, but it's never felt fast and it's never felt slow. You know, there are times where I've launched an offer in 3 days and like, just, it just felt like the pace. And there might be people who are looking at me going, why, how are you doing so much? But it was a projection of their energetic capacity. But at the time it was like, this feels so good for me. I can be on vacation, I'm falling in love, I'm doing this, and it's all flowing, and it would hurt me more not to do it. And then this month I'm like getting out of the first trimester, I'm hyping myself up every day. I've been launching something for like weeks. Like, from the first time I talked about it to when I do it, it'll be 5 weeks. It doesn't feel slow, it feels like my pace. And I just never waited for permission because I realized— I think there's a Steve Jobs quote, it's like, when you realize that the world was made up by people, but no smarter than you, no more worthy than you, like, the rules were made up by people like you. And so you can go make up the rules. And that doesn't mean we don't have so much respect for competency and for people who have developed things in in life and that we learn from people and mentors and we respect, yes. But you realize like, oh, I'm just as capable. No one's gonna give me permission to try my own thing, whether it's a pricing structure, a new offer, or the way you wanna express yourself. There truly is a new paradigm of business in which people are doing things very differently. And it just took someone saying, I think creatives, I think women, I think, I think there are a certain group of people that don't wanna be sold to that way, that don't wanna be marketed to that way. Way that wants something different. And so I'm gonna try that out. And it's so cool to see all the different ways there are to do things and to find your way and not make anything really wrong. And to keep experimenting and growing has really been my pathway. I think a lot of people get— the last thing I'll say on the growth is a lot of people get stuck on a certain identity or a certain brand or a certain offer or a certain iteration of themselves that they have built. They feel like, I've built this audience, I've built this level of success. They've built this nest, and now it feels like they really want to leave the nest, but now they have a nest. Where in the beginning, when they were being brave, it's like, there's no— I have nothing, so I'm flying from the nest, you know? And that's still hard, but when you build something and you feel like, I don't want to leave this nest because I've built it— and being brave when things are good and going from good to great because you just trust that there's something more, and you trust in your intuition, and you value alignment and richness and expansion of self and truth above whatever recurring revenue, whatever follower count, or whatever acceptance that you have from the people who like who you are now. You know, that takes a lot of courage. And so that's what I've seen again and again as well with clients, is like being willing to keep evolving, especially in a position of leadership. To keep staying flexible and innovative with the times, and then also then like what's actually life-giving and inspiring for you to be doing and sharing. So yeah, that's, that's really been it for me, is allowing myself to really be energized by my own business and keep evolving both in my own expression and what I'm talking about and what I'm teaching and who I'm serving. And that's kept it really fresh and really exciting.
So, so good. Continue evolving always and allowing yourself to, to follow that journey. Your next evolution is obviously into motherhood, so I want to close just kind of asking you about how you see this. And maybe you just want to be blissfully surprised, but like, how you see this next evolution happening of stepping into motherhood, um, with entrepreneurship and all those things. What are you excited for? What do you think might change? Is going to change? Are you just totally open? Like, what's your perspective on that?
Yeah, you know, I saw you make something recently that I loved around like babyproofing the business and being so honest with yourself about like, gosh, does the current trajectory of where I am on my business— does this fit within everything that I want in life? And I believe that sometimes we try to solve problems before they're here, and that things like shift, you know, when people like, how do How do these moms do it with 3 kids? And I've heard people say, oh, it's easier with 3 because the first one you have no idea what you're doing. Then you just kind of figure it out and then you figure it out again. Like, so I, I do believe in the fact that you— things that feel like, how do I pick up that 100-pound weight? It's like you just keep picking heavy things up and then one day you pick that up. You know, it's just, that's just the only way to do it. We could talk about it all day long and try to solve the problem, but the only way is through. And so I know that it's going to be full of things you don't expect and that I can't even imagine what it's going to be like. But I do know that for the past— I want to say not— maybe a little less than 18 months, I had this huge aha through Ben Hardy's work. I love Ben Hardy, um, 10x Is Easier Than 2x. Really, it's teaching bravery. It's teaching like what's required to have a— it's teaching what's required to have a quantum leap, right? To like let go of what got you here to go there. And like, you don't wanna become a manager. You wanna have space. If you wanna be really a high-level thinker, like free yourself. Look at how to build wealth through providing value detached from your time. Like let's look at real business scaling. And I think it was Russell Brunson who said, if you don't have continuity, you don't have a business, you have a promotion. I was like, oh fuck. Like, okay, you took that a little far. But wow, can I start thinking like a big tech company, like a business, and really look at, um, forecasting. And so it really got me a little nerdy in, in my strategy. And over the past, you know, year or so, really restructuring my business to, to free space and time. And that said, um, I still love live coaching. Like, I still love coaching, and I feel like I kind of lose my spark when I'm not creating and coaching. But having that flexibility in your model, I think, is such such a gift that you can give your future self. And sometimes it can be hard, especially in the online coaching space where people get so addicted to the short-term milestones of like, I can have a really big month. Okay, I'll put this on flash sale. Okay, I'll sell my one-to-one time. And I like bow every day to my past self for being like, long-term, you know, it took a while for some of the things I put into place to really materialize. And it took forfeiting some short-term goals, but long-term I'm like, thank you so much. Oh, oh my God. So that, you know, really doing that in advance has been really helpful. And just knowing that Living Brave is so beyond like the business, and that I'm not like— I look forward to seeing how it continues to evolve and grow. But when someone had asked me recently, before I even got pregnant, like, do you think that, you know, you'll stop showing up as much when you have kids? And, you know, when you become a mom, like, what are you thinking? And before I could even respond? We are at Disney World. And Christian jumps in, he's like, no, like, Shoosh literally evolves and grows and like integrates through creation, through writing, and through teaching other people. Like, this is going to be the biggest transition and transformation of her life. I don't think she's gonna stop doing that now. And I was like, I like that. So I think that I'll, I'll continue to want to share and grow and evolve and I just can't wait to see how I can do it for myself, but also model for other moms and women who motherhood is a huge part of their purpose in life. Because for me, it's like the most important thing I could possibly be doing, you know? And it's freaking crazy, and it's already the hardest thing I've ever done in my whole life. So, so here we go. We can do hard things, and that's, that's a transformation portal. But sometimes we need reminders. Because yeah, it can feel brutal sometimes. And I need Christian looking at me going, but this is happening for you. I know, but there's no bumper sticker that says you'd rather be in transformation. I know, I think you just need a nap. I know, you know, shit, you're right, thank you.
Oh my God, well, I'm excited for you to model that because that's a huge part of like my journey recently, and I shared a lot about it in the Egypt episodes. Like, so much came up for me around the journey into motherhood. So I love having more expanders of people that I can look up to and watch and witness their journeys and just feel, um, yeah, feel expanded and have that kind of permission slip of seeing what's possible. And so I'm really, really, really, really, really excited for you. I'm so happy for you guys, and I can't wait to meet baby boy, baby Horus.
I know, we're like, is that his name? Or he— no. Yeah. Oh my gosh.
