How to WIN with Google Ads on a Small budget in 2026

Aaron Young breaks down five principles for running Google Ads on a tight budget: start with Search campaigns for control, target high-margin products in your best locations, use aggressive ad copy to filter out unqualified clicks, and collect at least 30 conversions in 30 days before scaling. A small budget means roughly 10-30 clicks daily.

If you've only got a small budget to spend in Google Ads, but you still need those sales and leads for your business. In this video, I'm going to be going through the five core principles that you need for success with Google Ads, even if you've only got a small budget to spend. The first thing that we need to really, really clarify is what do I mean by a small budget inside of Google Ads? Because the one thing you should not be asking, is $5 enough for Google Ads a day? That really is the wrong question. Because for success with Google Ads, it's all about having enough data. So for me, when about a small budget inside of Google Ads, it's going to be different for each individual nation, each individual location. But essentially what we're looking at when we talk about small budgets, it's any campaign which is only producing between 10 to 30 clicks a day. So if you're in a niche which only has a CPC of a dollar a day, that small budget can be anywhere between 10 to 30 dollars. With all that said, let's get straight into the teaching today and make sure you stick around to the end of this video, because at the end, this video, I will be sharing the exact blueprint that we use over the first 90 days of any account inside of Google Ads. So the most important thing that you need with inside of Google Ads for success is you do need to have enough budget for success with Google Ads. And as I said, it's between that 10 to 30 clicks a day. Why is that so important and why do I look at it that way? And for me, it ultimately comes down to being able to produce enough data inside of your campaign so that ultimately you can move over to smart bidding, maximize conversions, maximize conversion value, and then also move into some of the more automated campaigns like performance max, so you can reinvest that money back into your business and grow profitably with with Google Ads. A core factor that you need to understand inside of Google Ads in order to move to maximize conversions or maximize conversion value. Not only have we seen this in our own data, but Google's own documentation says you need to be getting at least 30 conversions over the past 30 days. And then if you want to start moving into the realm of target CPA or target ROAS, that number goes up to 50 conversions over 30 days. So when we know that that is the goal, in order to be able to reach out and really get into smart bidding and really be able to scale with Google Ads, we need to be getting that one conversion a day and when we look at the macro data that we see across Google Ads accounts and we're looking at an average across all different types of businesses, you're looking at a conversion rate between 3 to 10%. So for E commerce brands that generally sit somewhere between 3 to 5%, for the lead gen that sits between 5 to 10%, obviously we want to be achieving higher than that. And at Define Digital Academy for, for our students and our clients, we generally get well above those metrics. But especially if you're starting out in Google Ads and it's your first month, first two months, first three months of advertising in Google Ads, it does take time to build up those core metrics. And this is where that 10 to 30 clicks becomes really, really important. Because if you're at the bottom of that threshold of that 3% conversion rate, you're going to need at least, you know, just over that 30 clicks a day in order to get enough data so that you're getting those conversions. So the first thing is to make sure that yes, you may have a small budget inside of goog, but you do need to make sure that you meet that minimum threshold of at least 10 to 30 clicks a day so that you can start to build up enough data for success with Google Ads. Then let's move you on to the next phase and this is where you need to choose the right type of campaign. Now, especially when you start inside of Google Ads, Google Ads own dashboard will give you all different types of recommendations and a lot of them actually go against Google's own documentation. And that's one of the problems I have with the recommendations inside of Google Ads. And remember what we said before, Google's own documentation says before you start going into a campaign like performance, performance max, which uses maximize conversion or maximize conversion value, you need to be getting those 30 conversions over the previous 30 days first. Even in 2026, we are still recommending that for lead gen that you'll start with search and if you're an E commerce brand, that you start with search and shopping. Now we are moving to performance max, especially for E commerce, faster than what we were previously. But it's still a very, very strong starting point and where we start to recommend now the reason for why we would start with those two types of campaigns, it's going to be become more and more clear as we go through this process. But they are the two types of campaigns which are going to give you or they do still give you the highest level of control around the keywords that your ads are appearing on. Around the ad copy and also around the locations, demographics and audiences who are actually seeing your ads. And what I really want the really clear message to be for Google Ads, especially over those first 30 to 60 days, if you could really see that those first 30 or 60 days, it's very much around collecting data so that you can make optimizations so that you can then see better success with Google Ads. We do have countless cases of when we start Google Ads, the very first day they start getting conversions, high quality conversions coming through, but that does not happen all of the time. And what we really communicate to new members or new clients when they're starting their Google Ads journey for marketing for their business is very much the first three months. If we can just really look to build a solid platform that, that then after that three months we can really start to scale and really supercharge the profitability for you and your business. All right, now let's talk about number three. And this is the third phase and the third foundation that you need to be focusing on. And what we like to do here is focus on the easy wins. Another way that we say it in Australia here is that we wanna pick that low hanging fruit and what we really wanna go for is we wanna, especially at the start, it's all about getting that early success, building up some confidence in the platform so that you can then bring more money which you can then reinvest into the ads and grow the cycle from there. What I really want you to think about, especially when it comes to Google Ads, if you're operating on a small budget, you're going to be up against other players in your niche that potentially been on Google Ads for years and years and years and years. They've got their ad copy dialed in, they've got their audience targeting dialed in, they've got their smart bidding strategies dialed in, they've got everything working. And you're the new player coming into the market, trying to find your space in that auction. So it's for that reason what you want to start with is rather than advertising all of your individual products and all of your individual services, you want to focus not only on the core products and keywords which you think will convert the best, you also want to refine that down to the best locations and to the best demographics and interest groups. Remembering that with Google Ads it's not just about targeting the keywords. You've also got some extra optimization options that you can target different people based on their locations, interests, demographics and also history on the Internet. So let's now look at those three areas. The first thing, when it comes to your core products and services, as I said, don't feel like you've got to advertise all of your core products or all of your core services. What you really want to be focusing on is those products or services which ideally a have the highest profit margin or they could also be the product or service which has a super high volume which you know is going to convert really, really easy. So sometimes you may just have to balance it out and really find that right balance between a product which is profitable and has a higher profit margin, but also a product that is easier to sell with a quick turnaround window with, once again, so you can get those conversions coming in. Secondly, when you're thinking about targeting and going into a really, really specific market, don't think that you're going to target whole country or all of the states or even your whole city. So let's just say for example, you're an E commerce brand and if you've got a limited budget, rather than targeting a whole big country like America, you could just target two or three core states where you know you've got a little bit of following already or you know that this product would be really, really suited to those states. Or if you're a lead generation or service based business and you operate out of two cities, just choose, you know, one city which you know, are you going to get better leads and better conversions and it may even just be half of that city might be like the north part of the city or a collection of zip codes or postcodes which you want to be the core element of your business. And then finally also don't be afraid to target it down to core demographics. The good thing with Google Ads is say for example, your product is for people who've become parents in the last 12 months. Don't be afraid to go into Google's demographics and target parents with kids who are under 12 months old. The core thing you want to be doing here. Now you're not saying that these are the only people or the only groups of people that you are ever going to be marketing to, but you're really wanting to at the start really narrow down on where is it most likely that you're going to see success as fast as possible with your ad spend. If you're a business which is already operating, a good place to get this data is to go through and have a look at your current clients and your current customers and see what they have in common. You know, what are the Products they're buying. So what is your best selling products, what is your best selling services and what are your best locations and what are your best age demographics? And that's a great starting point to really focus on your core customer right for the start number four. And this is where you want to be very, very clear in your messaging and your ad copy. Don't be afraid to pre qualify people before they even click on your ad. The reason for why this is important, remember with Google Ads, one of the great things that I love about Google Ads is that in most cases you're not paying for people to see your ad. You're only paying when people click on your ad. So use that ad copy, especially if you're using search campaigns to be really, really specific around who your product or service is for and who it is not for. And this is something which I call aggressive transparency. And a perfect example is here is, let's just say your services start from $99, but you know, there are some other providers who are providing a cheaper service or product which you know, maybe at that $40 or $50 price point I'd be putting them an ad copy. You know, prices start from $99 or prices start from $299. Whatever that price point is, don't be afraid to put that in your ad copy once again because there's no point getting someone to click on your ad if the budget to spend on your product or service. What we're going to do now, and we're up to that all important phase five, we're going to take you through the 90 day process with those first four points. What I really want you to focus on, the common theme here for success with Google Ads, especially when you're operating with a smaller budget, is to get really, really super defined on who are going to be the people which are most likely to buy your products, most likely to buy your services, and what is the messaging which is going to appeal to them the most. So right now let's jump into a screenshare because I want to get super, super practical in this next part. Now to help you in is because I'm going to take you through the Google Ads success loop that we really look to focus on for the first 90 days. But to help you with this, I will also give you access to my Google Ads Optimization checklist. And also if you follow the link in the description below, you can get access to a product which we call Start and Scale. It gives you access to the checklist which shows you how to Optimize all the different types of campaigns. Search, shopping, also performance max, demand gen. So you've got everything that you need. And on top of that you'll also get all of my campaign set up guys, so you can make sure that you're setting these up in the correct way. And also within Start and Scout you will get a collection of optimization videos where I actually take you through the step by step process in how to complete each of these optimization tasks. So it's an amazing product which you can get absolutely free. Just follow that link in the description below. But what I also want you to think about when it comes to the first 90 days of Google Ads, remembering we're with a small budget. What we're wanting to do is ultimately we're wanting to get enough clicks up so that we can get that 30 conversions in 30 days. Then we can start moving over to smart bidding. And the way that we're doing that is to be super, super selective on our products and services. Focusing on the products and services which not only have a really good profit margin, but we know they've got a high volume and they're most likely to sell. Above and beyond that is we're also targeting the right locations, the right demographics and the right interest groups which we know are more likely to sell. And we're not wanting to target everyone, we're just wanting to target where we think we're going to get the most success at the fastest rate. The other benefit of that as well is thinking about rather than targeting say for example, all of America, you're just targeting two or three states. Even though you've got a smaller budget, you're more funneling that budget into greater areas. You're more likely to see success in the auctions. Think about it. Market like America. I think when it comes to Google Ads advertising, it's about 250 million different accounts which you could be targeting. If you break that down to two states, that obviously drops that number down, which also allows you to get more data inside of those areas. So let's now talk about the Google Ad success loop. And this is what I want you to be thinking for the first night. Remembering that each loop is going to take you about 30 days. Because what you want to be doing is you need to set up your Google Ads campaigns first and then you need to discover what's working and what's not working. Unfortunately, with Google Ads you can't do that after the first two days. When you start your Google Ads campaign, the only thing that you can really do in those first couple of weeks is potentially add in some negative keywords. And what you really want to be doing is that after that first three to four week mark, that's when you want to find out what's working and what's not working. What we're looking at here is what ad copy headlines are giving you not only the most clicks, but the initial conversions. Also don't forget about what's happening on the different landing pages, what landing pages are working better. And then from there you start to add in some optimizations. And this could be about if you've got say for example, one campaign with three ad groups, you might find that you're only getting conversions from two ad groups. So an easy optimization action may be to pause one of those ad groups to focus even more budget and more spend on those two performing ad groups which are converting. You may find that none of your ads are converting. You may then have to go through and write new ads and do some new split testing with your ad copies. So that's when you can go through, you add in those optimizations and then this is the key, you need to wait again. And that's why we want to make it really clear, especially when you're starting with Google Ads, is that sometimes it takes two or three goes at this until you really start seeing that success come into your business. And that's why we say you need to give it at least 60 to 90 days before you start to see some real success with Google Ads. Thank you for joining me. My name is Aaron Young from Define Digital Academy. And remember, if you wanted to get access to start and scale, so we can really help you on your journey with success with Google Ads. Why don't you follow that link in the description below. And earlier in that video I did mention about Demand Gen. I'm just especially conscious that right now Google is recommending for a lot of businesses to start Demand Gen. Now I like Demand Gen as a campaign, but at the moment I think there's really only three real reasons why you should run a Demand Gen campaign. If you want to find out what those reasons are, just go and watch this video right here. See you next time.
