Stop Starting New Google Ads Campaigns! Do This Instead

Aaron Young explains why scrapping Google Ads campaigns usually backfires. Instead, use a traffic light audit: green for what's working (scale it), red for critical fixes. He shows a local service business consolidating budget into one converting campaign, and an ecommerce store cutting 23% waste by excluding non-converting products.

One of the most common questions we get inside of our Define Digital Academy Google Ads Mastery support feed is this. I'm not getting results that I need inside of my Google Ads campaign, so should I turn them off and start again? And I want to be really, really clear that in most cases, the worst thing that you can do is to turn off all of your campaigns and then start again. And that's what I generally call blowing up an account. And you'll see this time and time again, especially if this business has moved from agency to agency or different freelancers. If they're not getting the results, the new agency, the new freelancer will come in, turn off everything that the previous agency or freelancer has done, and then start fresh with their own campaigns. My problem with that is it's not solving the underlying issues in that account. And the other thing about that is that quite often is not the best way. And the reason for that is that even an underperforming account, so it might have three or four different campaigns with multiple ad groups. Even that underperforming account, if it is generating some level of conversions, there are some good things in that account that it's far better to build upon those good things rather than just to turn everything off and try to start again. And the way to think about this is if we were to use a building analogy, it's much cheaper and faster to renovate an existing house as opposed to knocking it all down and then building again. And that's why inside of Define Digital Academy, when we go through an audit, an account, we use a traffic light audit system. And what we're doing here is we're giving the business three real clear areas of what, what's currently happening inside of their account. With that traffic light, we first you look at the green traffic light, and green is this is what's working. And many times this is the easiest wins. A common example that we see here is that a business might have anywhere from three to five different campaigns running. They look at the total account and it's not performing, but one of those campaigns, or sometimes two of those campaigns, or sometimes inside of a campaign, you might have different ad groups that are performing really, really well. And what we want to do is we go the easiest way to improve the performance pretty much overnight is to spend more money where you're getting those current conversions. And we would say pretty much every single account that we see, there are some really, really strong green light keyword themes or product themes where we just go, just spend more money here and you will automatically get better results. So that's the green light. Then the next level is the orange light or the yellow light, depending on what your traffic lights look like where you are in the world. And these are things which are important but not urgent. And a classic example we see here is that if someone can't get their account working, they may have gone out to start perform max or start demand gen. And we go, hey, look, we agree that down the track you need to start those types of campaigns, but we need to firstly fix these core foundations. Or it could be, say for example, if they, you know, eventually may need to increase their conversion tracking. All those different scenarios are in there where we're going, look, this is important, but right now it's not urgent. That's that orange light. And then we come into the red light similar to the green lights, where these are the things that you need to change right now for immediate improvement in your results. And this could be things like removing multiple campaigns that are targeting the same products or keywords services, updating your bidding strategies, cleaning out your actual keyword targeting. And that's the way that we go through and do an audit. So rather than when we advise our business on their account, rather than saying you just need to turn everything off, we're going, this is what's working, spend more money here. These are the areas that you need to hold off on important, but they're not urgent. And then those red light ones, these are the other areas that if you work on these right now, you can see immediate results within 7 to 10 to 21 days. Now that I've outlaid the process, you might go, that's great, Aaron, but how do I actually do that? And that's what I wanted to do in this video is we're going to jump into a screen share very, very soon where I'm going to take you through two real life examples of businesses where we reviewed their accounts in the last couple of weeks and I'll go through the recommendations in that green light, orange light and red light process that we went through with those businesses. But before we get into that live screenshot right at the top of this video, I'll let you know about Define Digital Academy's Google Ads Mastery Program. And you might be asking, hey, what is that? But right now let's head over to a screen share so I can walk you through some real life accounts on how we've done this traffic light audit system. All right, so now we're inside of our Google Ads account and I just want to go back to the first thing we spoke about in this video about the most common question as to whether we should start new campaigns or try and fix your common ones. And what I wanted to show you through here is that this account, which we did an audit of over the last couple of weeks, they've bounced around from two or three different agencies since July last year. And between those different agencies you can see here is that they've all started 14 different campaigns and they've tried different things from different types of search campaigns, performance max campaigns. But regardless of starting all of those new campaigns, the core problem remained for this business was that they just weren't getting enough traffic inside of their Google Ads campaign. So what you firstly want to do when you are looking at really making that decision as to whether you should turn off your current campaigns or start new ones, you really want to ask that real big question, what am I going to get from starting a new campaign? And many of the times you're not going to get no benefit at all. Because if you're just starting new campaign with a couple little tweaks, you're then going to have to enter into a new learning phase. Whereas that's why I think it's much better to look at your current account, try to find what is working and then go, well, if we're not seeing the performance that we need, how can we push more traffic to what is working to get the better results? And that's exactly what we did with this business. We went through and saw this top campaign. Out of all of the 14 different types of campaigns that they had tried to run, this was the one that was at least getting some traction and more importantly some conversions in the market. But what we did from there as well is that we did also make the decision that this just was not getting enough traffic at all. And what I want to show you in through here is that over the last 30 days this business had only got 136 clicks which where we're looking at with Google Ads, you that number really needs to be at least 300, but ideally 600 clicks in a month for a search campaign. And you may go, why is that so important? The reason for why that's so important is because ultimately for success with Google Ads in 2026, you really do need to be moving over to a smart bidd. Platforms are maximized conversions, maximize conversion value, and in order to get there, you need to be hitting at least 30 conversions a day. If you want to go in higher than that and start using things like Target roas or target CPA, that number needs to be at 50 or 60. So you can see the problem here is that with this account they tried to segment all of these different types of campaigns, but it wasn't fixing the core issue that they just were not getting enough traffic around a core level of keyword terms. And they tried to splitting the city into four different location areas and targeting different areas and then breaking off their services. So what we went and did is when this is the one service out of the three core services that you're offering, this is the one service which is converting. We want to move all your budget into that area. We want to remove all the citywide segmentation and really just go and get one campaign getting some more clicks happening inside of your business. We're not there yet. The business has only just made these changes in the last 72 hours. But you can see here, when we're looking at the data from yesterday, we're already nearly hitting that benchmark of 10 clicks a day, it's at 9. So whereas as you saw previously, they were nowhere near that, only getting about three or four clicks a day. So we're getting much, much closer to where we need to be but for this business, it was all about the core problem of they're not getting enough traffic going through their campaign. Let me show you another example. And this is another example. This is an ecommerce example. And this business was really, really similar and well, in that it had tried different types of campaigns. It was starting a new campaign, stopping a new campaign, starting another campaign, stopping a new campaign. But what we found with this business is, what the problem is is that when we went through and did a review of the because this is a ecommerce campaign, we went through and did a review of what products were actually spending their money. We found this interesting, or it was actually quite a sad fact for this business in that 22, I think it was about ended up at about 23% of their spend over the previous 90 days, which equated to $9,000. They got $36 worth of conversion value happening. Google was spending products and continually spending products. They just weren't getting any conversions. And then all of these other products where they were getting some conversions, they weren't getting the spend levels that they needed. So what we've recommended to them is they needed to work on their segmentation and actually block off those products or exclude those products that were getting well over 23% of the spend with no conversions at all. So we can focus more money where they'll get in the actual conversions inside of their business. Now, the number one takeaway that I want you to take from this video is this. If you've got campaigns inside of your Google Ads account which are not converting and not giving you the results, don't think that just by turning off those campaigns and starting new campaigns that you're instantly going to see better results with your Google Ads account. What you really need to find out is you need to find out why are those campaigns not working. And generally when you do that research to find out why those campaigns are not working, you're going to get far better and much faster results by going through and making the changes inside of your current campaigns that you have in order to really, really focus the money on. Look, this is where we are getting some. So let's spend more money here. So as I said, rather than just by default go, we're going to turn everything off and start afresh. What I really, really encourage you to do is to go and have a look at your current Google Ads campaigns and find out why are they not working and why are they not converting and work on fixing those problems rather than just turning off the campaigns and starting again because in most cases, as I showed you, that is not going to make any difference to the long term performance of your account and and more importantly, your business.
