72. Stop Making Excuses and Giving Up Your Power

Andy Neary argues people give away their power by blaming luck, elections, the pandemic, or their boss for lack of progress. A former baseball player, he contrasts superstition with deliberate preparation and consistent habits. Stop waiting for circumstances to change and take responsibility for what you can control.

Today we're going to talk about good luck, bad luck, those you think you have luck and are you just giving away your power when you think it's all about somebody being lucky or superstition. So today I want to help you get rid of the bullshit in your head that you've been telling yourself and the excuses that you are making for why you are not having the success you know you're capable of. But before we get there, I want to make a personal invite. If you're an insurance broker, you're a financial advisor, listen, we've got a month and a half left in 2020. Friday the 13th.
That word, that phrase just comes with so many connotations, doesn't it? One, I think of the movie, the series of movies as a kid, the horror movies with Jason and the hockey mask, and, you know, staying up late at night, getting that one chance to watch that movie, or even staying up when the parents didn't realize you were staying up to watch that movie.
But when you think of the phrase Friday the 13th, you immediately think about luck, mainly bad luck. You think about superstition. And trust me, I am an athlete, former baseball player, it was all about superstition. Last week, I shared my pregame routine when I was getting ready to start a game on the mound. It was all superstition, right? If I knew I ran my poles, I ran my sprints, I did my jump ropes, got the long toss in, I knew I was locked in. And if I didn't do that, man, I would mentally let myself start feeling the doubt if I was readily prepared. So that's what I want to talk about today is I think, especially off the heels of one of the biggest elections in US History, I think a lot of people are giving their power away right now. And my question for you is, are you doing the same? I want you to evaluate today where you are, the results you're getting. Listen, I get it. 2020 has been a really difficult year. It hasn't gone the way you thought it would. Maybe you started the year with grand plans, big goals, and here you are with a month and a half left to go and you're not even close to those. Well, number one, give yourself a little grace. I'm gonna tell you that, right, it's been one hell of a messed up year. But number two, are you making excuses? Are you literally giving your power.
To feel like any outcome you're gonna create in your life is depending on somebody else? Some vote? That's one thing that has blown me away right now with this election is how many people truly believe that this election is going to determine the fate of your future. Now, we could argue what changes are gonna be made in this country and yada, yada, yada. But my point is this. Literally, whoever is elected president in this country, does it affect how you get up every single morning and show up? No. You have to focus on what you can control. You have to focus on the work you are putting in every single day. You have to focus on showing up, being consistent, and putting yourself in the best pain position to win. Can you control the outcome? Absolutely not. Whether it's our new president. Whether it's that big sales opportunity you're going after next week, you can't control that. But you can absolutely control your mindset. You can absolutely control your attitude, and you can absolutely control how you're prepared every single day. It used to drive me nuts when I was playing pro ball and I'd have conversations with friends, people I met, I don't know at the bar, whatever. And every time somebody found out was a former I was currently playing professional baseball at the time, I would start hearing the stories. Yeah, my brother, he had a great opportunity, you know, to play professional baseball. He had all the skill. But you know what? His coach hated him and he never played.
You know, I had that chance to play at the next level, but I hurt my shoulder. Or I had that chance to play at the next level, but you know what? My teachers didn't like me. I didn't get good grades, so I was never eligible to play. These are all excuses. These are all you blaming somebody else for your outcome. And it's true whether it's in sports, it's true whether it's in business, it's true whether it's in relationships. And I am in no position to be talking about relationships and giving advice. But my point is this. If you constantly find yourself in a bad relationship with the opposite sex, with the same sex, I don't care whoever it is you're dating or married to, it's not them. You have to self reflect. You have to go inside. Because at the end of the day, you can control how you show up. You can control your attitude, and you can control how you are preparing to be your best every single day right now. You're spending way too much time giving up your power.
Let me go back to the discussion I started with at the beginning of this episode. If you had some big sales goal at the beginning of the year. I know I did. Am I there? No. Have I made a lot of progress? Hell, yeah. But am I where I thought I was going to be when I set that goal back in January? No, I'm not. And I'm guessing you're not, too. But what are you doing right now? Are you trying to figure out what part you played in you not being where you want to be right now? Or are you just absolutely, 100% blaming Covid the pandemic, People living in fear and not making decisions? Or maybe even your boss sucks? My company doesn't get what I'm trying to do. My prospects don't get it. No, no, no, no, no, my friend. When you're not getting the results you don't want, when you're not hitting the goals you've set out for yourself, there is never a situation where some outside force is causing you not to have those results. And that's even coming in a year like this year, when we could absolutely blame everything on Covid and the lockdowns. A winning mindset requires you to stop giving up your power, stop blaming outside forces for your current results, and start looking in the mirror and realizing what role you play in that, and figure out what you've got to do to change. Your prospects aren't buying from you. It's not their fault. They're not stupid. You are communicating ineffectively. You are not representing the person they want to work with. It's that simple. So that's my advice for you today. This isn't a long episode, but coming off the heels again of this election, a huge election. Let's not. Let's not downplay that. But so many people right now are giving up their power. They're. They're. They're literally laying the hopes and dreams of their outcomes on some stupid superstition, some luck, some outside force, outside event that's going to happen that's going to change everything for them. If you are sitting in that position, I promise you your day is never coming. So my advice for you today is very simple. I want you to wake up every single day, and I want you to figure out what you can control. I want you to look at your day and figure out what part of your day can you control. I'm here to tell you it's not an outcome. It's not some election. It's not what your boss says to you. You can control your attitude. You can control the energy you bring to the day, and you can control how you treat others.
If you do that, day after day after day, I promise you, you will start creating momentum. And momentum followed with consistency becomes very dangerous. And you'll start getting the results you want. But you're not having bad luck. When you see other people winning, it's not because of good luck. I laugh so hard when I hear people talk about, oh, it must be lucky to be in your position. I heard this so much when I playing pro baseball. No, no, no, no, no. It's not luck. It's. I showed up every day and worked my, you know what? My ass off. Every single day when no one was watching that gave me that chance to play professional baseball. Those people in your industry that are having massive success, Those people you look up to, those people you might be kind of jealous of right now. And you're saying, man, I'd be lucky to be making that kind of money, be lucky to have that kind of authority, that kind of engagement, that kind of adulation from the peers. Quit thinking it's luck. They're there because they've busted their living ass to get there. You need to start doing the same. So as we wrap up a very, very superstitious day, November 13th, Friday the 13th, I want you to stop giving up your power, giving up your outcomes to luck, to superstition, to votes, to whatever, and start taking control. Take control of your personality, take control of your attitude, take control of your preparation. Because at the end of the day, if control that, you will get the results you want. That's it today, my friends. That's all I got for you. I know it's a little rant, but hey, I think you need to hear it right now because there's a very good chance you are not right where you want to be today. And instead of looking outward and looking for excuses and looking for blame and looking to point the finger, look in the mirror today. Take a hard look at yourself and figure out what it is you're not doing right now to get the results you want. It's not your prospect, it's not your boss, it's not your teammates, you. It's not some president sitting in Washington, D.C. it comes down to you. Take 100% responsibility for everything and good shit will happen. Because you know, when confidence and clarity collide, action happens. Go make it happen today.
