We're in the middle of a pandemic. We're being told a recession is right around the corner. Why in the world would I want to be thinking about scale when I'm just trying to survive? If you're in that spot right now, listen, I get it. Most of us are. But you're gonna make it through. Your business is gonna survive if you do the right things. And on the backside of this recession, it's gonna be something beautiful. And you need to figure out how to scale your business. And this is a topic that scares many small businesses and solopreneurs. I know it does. For me. Something that's been on my mind for the past three or four months. How am I gonna scale a coaching business? Because coaching requires me to be coaching somebody. And there's only so much of me and only so much of my time. How in the world can I scale this business?
Now? There's only one way I one piece of advice I can give you, and the best way to give you that advice is to go back to my days on the pitcher's mound. Today I'm going to share with you what a pitcher's role when there's an infield fly ball has to do with you scaling your business. So what in the world do I mean okay. When you're a pitcher, you're on the mound, you throw a strike, the batter hits a fly ball in the infield.
There's one thing a pitcher has to do when there is an infield field fly ball, and that is this. Just get the hell out of the way. I know that sounds counterintuitive, but it's the truth. If you watch a major league baseball game and you see that infield fly, that fly ball hit sky high, even if it's directly above the pitcher's bound, the number one thing a pitcher has to do is just get out of the way. Leave it up to your infield. Whether it's the shortstop, the second baseman, or the first baseman, or even the third baseman, it is their role to catch that ball. Your job as a pitcher is to just get the hell out of the way and let them do their job. Listen, as a former infielder and somebody who considered himself a pretty darn good fielding pitcher, this was a hard thing to swallow. Wait a minute. You mean I can't just stand there and catch the ball? I've got to get out of the way so my shortstop or my second baseman can do their job? Yep. That is the role of a pitcher. When there is a fly ball hit on the infield, just get out of the way. Let your infielders, your teammates, do their best work. That is the best way your defense and your team ultimately will have success. So what does that have to do with scaling?
At some point, you have to learn to get the hell out of the way. So for me, I struggled with this for a very long time with my coaching practice. I was doing everything, but I felt I was good at everything.
And I wasn't making the right hires. I wasn't finding the right people that could do the work that I shouldn't be doing whatsoever. Even though I might be good at it, doesn't mean I should be doing it. So what did I do to start scaling my business? Number one, I hired a virtual assistant. She's more like a virtual COO for me. She's excellent at what she does. She's extremely professional. But she started allowing me to delegate certain tasks, my daily rituals that I shouldn't have been doing. The paperwork, the contracts, the emails to potential clients, those are things that I was spending a lot of time doing, and it was keeping me from going out and finding new coaching opportunities.
The second thing I did, and very recently, was I hired somebody to start posting my social media if I was going to create massive awareness of my Message my coaching business, I couldn't sit on LinkedIn, I couldn't sit on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook all day and make sure I was posting my content. I needed to hire somebody to help me do that if I was going to scale my awareness. I feel I'm really good at content. I still create my content, but I couldn't sit there and push it out all day. If I was going to create that omnipresence, I had to have somebody else do it for me. And right there, just in those two hires with a virtual coo, virtual assistant, and hiring somebody who is unbelievable at social media to take those tasks off my plate has freed up more time for me to coach, to take on more clients and ultimately scale my business. So my advice for you today is this. If you are a small business owner right now, it might be just you or you're trying to grow a team, you're trying to grow your sales, but you're finding yourself.
Taking on certain tasks that you should really be delegating. My advice to you is this. Get the hell out of the way. Find the people that love those tasks. Find the people that can take those tasks off your plate so you can do what you do best, whether it's growing the business, selling, running a team. You need to start delegating. You need to start hiring out. You need to start building that team around you so that you can scale that business. Just like a pitcher when that ball was hit sky high in the air above the infield, don't think you can do it all by yourself. You need to get out of the way and let your team do its best work. So that's my advice today for you. Again, I know it's a bizarre conversation to be having in the middle of a pandemic and right before a recession, but better days are ahead. You are going to get a chance to scale your business and there's going to be a lot of important decisions you need to make. And if you think you can do it all yourself, you're in a lot of trouble. So let the ego go. Start delegating. Start finding those people who are excellent at those certain tasks that you shouldn't be doing. And I promise you, you will grow faster. You will get more time to do what you love and it's going to let you scale your business well into the future. So take action today. Go find those resources you need to grow your business and your you, your bottom line and the future growth of your business will be happy you did. And last, but certainly not least.
