Be The Standard For The Advice You're Giving Others

Andy Neary argues you can't credibly advise others on productivity and healthy living if you don't practice those habits yourself. Maintain your routines even on vacation if you want clients to trust what you're telling them.

The next morning, Sunday morning, I got up and this is where this thought of credibility and practicing what you preach hit me. I got up and I think it would have been really easy, especially after a very late night, it would have been easy to get up and just kind of slowly move into the day. And we had a morning in Bozeman before we had to fly back home. But I got up and without even thinking about it, I started getting into my normal morning routine, which is, you know, breath, work, cold shower, journaling. I hit the gym at the hotel room or the hotel. I just got right back into my flow of what is my normal morning routine to get myself set up for a successful day. And when we got to the airport, we had some time. So I sat down and did my weekly planning as I do every single Sunday now at the Bozeman airport. They may have, they provide a really good setting to do your weekly planning. There's a row, a table with a row of chairs. It's near one of the gates and it looks out, this huge glass window looks out over the mountains. It was actually absolutely inspirational for planning a week. But here we were at 12:30 getting back on the plane to come home, and my morning routine, my weekly planning, was done. Now.
Hearing me say that might have you thinking, andy, you're ridiculous. You know, you're on vacation. Disconnect, enjoy. Right? And it hit me though, when I was thinking about this.
This is, there's a, there's a reason I do this.
There's a reason that's bigger than putting my mind in the right place, putting my body, you know, keeping my body healthy, getting my week planned properly. Those are all part of the equation. But there's a, there's a reason I do this that's bigger than that, and that is this. If I'm going to sit down each and every week and coach my clients and give them tips, ideas on not just marketing their business, but how to lead a healthier life, how to be more productive, how to, how to time block in there and plan their weeks effectively. If I'm going to give that advice to them, I better damn well be on top of my own game.
And that morning, it really hit me because I look back, even at the 10 day road trip we were on in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Amy and I didn't skip a beat. Yeah, we had a lot of fun. We got to see family and friends and be a part of an amazing community. But those daily habits, those disciplines, they didn't go away.
And again, some people might look at that and say you're a little ridiculous. Andy, you're on vacation. You need to disconnect. I did. I still disconnected. But you know what? Those habits, those daily habits and disciplines that put me in the best position to win, they didn't go away. And I don't feel bad for that because I look at it as my obligation.
To be at my best. If I'm going to give that same advice to my clients, I need to practice what I preach.
