Andy Neary (speaker) contrasts direct marketing and brand marketing for agencies—especially insurance agencies—arguing that direct marketing seeks immediate results (cold calls, emails, door‑to‑door) but often fails when prospects don't know the brand. Brand marketing, by contrast, builds name recognition and likability over time through social media, content, and public speaking; it doesn't produce instant measurable returns but fills the pipeline with better prospects and makes selling easier. The speaker recommends using both channels but emphasizes leaning into brand marketing to scale business.

Let's talk about direct marketing versus brand marketing. If you come from the insurance industry like me, you absolutely know what direct marketing is. Maybe you're an agency that has hired a cold calling service and you're paying them to schedule appointments. That's direct marketing. I bet you've sent out a bunch of emails to prospects hoping it generates an appointment. That's direct marketing. Right? You probably have gone door to door hoping to schedule appointments. That's direct marketing. This is what our industry has known. I'm going to spend a certain amount of time and or money and I want to create an instant result. But here's the problem with direct marketing for most direct marketing has you reaching out to prospects who have zero clue who you are. You have no name recognition with them and you're hoping some message, the perfect script is going to land on them on the right day and they'll say yes and schedule an appointment with you. However, I've watched far too many agencies spend a lot of money on direct marketing to have it create no result. Therefore, they deem marketing stupid. They don't want to lean into it anymore and they have become a complete anonymity in their market. You see, brand marketing is different. There isn't no instant return. You can't measure brand marketing. But today people do business with people like that them. So my question to you is, what are you doing to get people to know who you are, like who you are so it's easier for them to do business with you. That is brand marketing. That is why you need to be out on social media. That is why you need to be creating content that's valuable for your prospects, not content that asks them to do business with you all the time. It's why you need to be on public speaking stages building brand recognition. That is all brand marketing. Yes, it does not create an instant result, but it is the best way to fill your pipeline with the right prospects, which is going to make selling easier for you. So my advice today is simple. Yes, still use the direct marketing channels when you've deemed them appropriate. But you can't just use direct marketing anymore. You have to lean into brand marketing. You have got to build exponential awareness for who you are so people get to know you and they can like you. Which is going to make doing business with you so much easier. So take a look at where you are right now. Take a look at how you are leveraging marketing. What you have your marketing departments doing. Is it all direct marketing? Because that's not going to work anymore. Like it used to. You've got to start leaning into brand recognition. What can you do to get a lot of people to know who you are? How can you get them to like who you are? Because, as I said earlier, people. People do business with people like them. That is how you generate brand recognition, through the channel of brand marketing. So leverage it today. Get out and get a lot of people to know who you are. It's what's changed my business. It's what's allowed us to scale to levels we didn't think were possible. It wasn't done by spamming you with a bunch of direct messages. Brand recognition, brand marketing is where it's at today. So I hope your agency leverages that, because you know what happens when you mix this clarity with confidence. You do amazing things. So go out and make it happen today.
