Andy Neary explores why agencies struggle with small business clients. The problem isn't the market, it's operations: small businesses need tight, repeatable systems to scale profitably, even at thinner margins. Without disciplined processes, agencies lose motivation and can't deliver consistent value.
Where do you think a lot of the industry is overlooking opportunities that exist in small business?
I think the big misstep is that, you know, some of these small businesses grow into big businesses. Some of them get purchased by the larger businesses. Some of them, again, fuel the community and the work that we do. I think where agencies kind of miss the mark and where it becomes really easy to not want to get out of bed in the morning for small business is just that it's incredibly hard to scale. So agency economics is very different. Compensation looks different. And so in order for you meaningfully scale a small business operations, you've got to have tight operations and processes in place. And I think that becomes a daunting task for many, especially when you can go and maybe land a couple of big deals in a year and feel really good about that revenue that comes in and the margin that might be associated with it. So you got to be comfortable living in different margins, maybe making a little investment where it makes sense, but you have to be able to want to get up and do that at the end of the day.
Yeah, I got to believe, and I will go into it as much as you're willing to go into it, but when you're dealing with volume, Which is what small businesses, you have gotta have systems in place.
