Andy Neary recounts a difficult open-water swim where Jake guided him as a "swim Sherpa," swimming ahead to show direction and pausing to let him catch up. The lesson: you need people to help you go far, even when you could go fast alone.

Swim was by far the hardest thing for me. And the only reason I made it, I'm gonna be honest here, is because of Jake. Jake did the first leg across. Yep. And he was gracious enough to swim back. You literally were my swim Sherpa.
I've never swung in an open water setting. Yeah. And I didn't know where I was going. I was like, where am I? There's no lane to follow. I don't know where I'm going. But Jake was my guide. Yeah. And I was like, oh, I see him kicking. I know where I'm going. And then he stopped and let me catch up. And then he would go further again. And I think that's just a good metaphor for life, that sometimes you need another person there to walk with you or carry you when you can't go yourself.
