The Benefits of Seeing the OPPORTUNITY In Every CHALLENGE [Friday Bullpen Sessions Episode 48]

Andy Neary hosts a Friday Bullpen Sessions episode (late August 2020) encouraging viewers to reframe current crises — notably multiple Colorado wildfires and the COVID-19 pandemic — as opportunities to reset their lives. Using a personal travel anecdote and a text from his partner, Amy, he contrasts pessimistic vs. optimistic perspectives, urging listeners to take inventory of their careers, relationships, and habits, pursue coaching or accountability, and take decisive action to 'rise like a phoenix.'

Hey. Hey. It is Friday. It is time for Friday bullpen sessions. My name is Andy Neary. Each week I deconstruct my journey, my struggles through professional baseball to help unpack yours so you can live a life on purpose. I take the lessons I learned in baseball and help you apply them in business and in life. So if you're ready to join me, grab your glove, grab a ball, get ready to take the mound and get ready to be down to strike out the limiting beliefs in your life. Alright, here we go.
Hey. Hey. Welcome back. I hope you're having a great Friday. It is time for episode 46. This week we're going to talk about opportunity and your view on the world right now. Do you see it as an opportunity or do you see it as one big thing? Fat challenge. Do you think optimistically or do you think pessimistically? That's going to be today's topic. Speaking of which, how are you viewing the rest of your year? You know, it is August 21st and we've got a little over four months left. And you could look at the rest of the year as one big fat challenge or you could look at it as an opportunity to do some pretty amazing things. Now, here's what I'm going to tell you. If you have that goal that you're going to make the rest of the year as beautiful, as amazing as it can be, you can't do it alone. You're going to need help whether it's surrounding yourself with the right tribe, you're going to need help whether it's the accessing, the right coaching, the right mentorship. But do yourself a favor, surround yourself with the right people. If it's coaching you need, here's what I want you to do. I want you to shoot me a direct message. Let's jump on a call. Let's dive into a Discovery call. See where you need the biggest help right now. Because getting to where you want to go from where you are today is not going to happen unless you have the right perspective on what the end of the year is going to look like for you. And what you need more than anything is discipline, accountability.
And action. And I want to help you make that happen. So let's connect. We'll hook up for Discovery call. We'll see what you need and we'll see how I can help. Now let's dive into today's episode. Shift your mindset. Today we're talking about opportunities and challenge. I just got back from a fun weekend last weekend with a couple Friends of mine, we had planned what I might call a mancation. We were going to go head over to play golf just outside of Glenwood Springs, which if you're not familiar with Colorado, it's a beautiful area of the city state. The Roaring Fork Valley is gorgeous. You've got Mount Sopris at the south end of the valley, just stunning views. You're just north of Aspen, another beautiful area of the state. But as the week progressed and we were getting closer to leave for our three day weekend, reality started to set in that it might be hard to get there. You see, if you're not watching the news right now with Colorado, we've got, was it four major wildfires all burning at one time right now. And one of those wildfires started early last week in the Glenwood Canyon. Now the Glenwood Canyon is how you get to Glenwood Springs. I 70 goes west, goes into the Glenwood Canyon. Again, stunningly beautiful drive. But wildfire broke out earlier in the week, completely shutting down the canyon. And my thoughts and prayers go out to those fighting that fire. It's a big one. It's growing very quickly. They've had to have to have a lot of evacuations. Yeah, we've got another wildfire burning just west of here in Fort Collins up in the Cameron Pass. It's causing the air quality here in Fort Collins to not be that great. And we also had, there's another major, probably the biggest wildfire burning in far western Colorado. I think that things up over 75,000 acres right now. So just a lot of bad activity going on when it comes to the wildfire season here in Colorado this year. Haven't had a lot of rain, it's dry. You know, just what we're dealing with right now. So here's where I want to talk about opportunities versus challenges right now. It came from a text message I actually got from Amy on our way home from our little mancation, our little golf vacation. So we were coming home. We spent the last evening in Aspen and we were making our trek home for the day. And so we had to go up over Independence Pass, which is just outside of Aspen. And by that point we had known that the Cameron Pass wildfire had started growing. It had blocked off Highway 14 to the west of Fort Collins. And again, it had made the air quality pretty bad in Fort Collins. So my two buddies and I are driving home. We're heading up over Independence Pass, which you get up over the east side of it, come down, come through Leadville, and you start making your way down to Copper, the Copper Mountain Resort, so you can hit i70 and then come home to Denver. And as we hit Leadville and we started driving home, or started coming down the Hoosier Pass to go into the Copper Triangle, or I should say the Copper Resort, I saw the huge plume of smoke.
And instantly said, man, I didn't realize the Cameron Pass wildfire, what they're calling the Chambers Lake Wildfire, was so big. I mean, this plume of smoke was massive. But as we started Getting closer to I70, I said, that can't be the Chambers Lake Wildfire. That that smoke is much too close to be Cameron Pass. Cameron Pass is at least 50, 60 plus miles north of I 70. And so when we hit I 70 and started making our way east, we quickly realized that, no, no, this is not the Chambers Lake Wildfire. This is another wildfire, a different wildfire that's burning just north of I 70 outside of Silverthorne. And so I went on my iPhone, googled and came to quickly realize that this was yet another wildfire that had kicked up over the course of the weekend here in Colorado, making the fourth large wildfire that we had brewing. This one is the Williams Gulch or the Williams Fork wildfire. And this thing was quickly growing out of control. And I just hit a point where, as we're driving home, said, man, could this get worse? We have four major wildfires burning in four different parts of the state, all causing massive damage, causing evacuations. Just not a good situation. Right? I remember I texted Amy and I said, man, I thought that was the Cameron Pass. This is actually another fire, the Williams Fork wildfire that's burning. And she responded with a text that I did not expect.
But.
It put a smile on my face, and she said, all this means is that we, Colorado, are gonna rise out of these ashes like a phoenix.
So instead of having the pessimistic perspective of these wildfires, of thinking about the damage and the smoke and the air quality, Amy put a positive spin. Amy saw it as an opportunity. As hard as it is to see four big wildfires as an opportunity, she said, this is our way of burning down everything we've known in the past, and it's our chance to rise like a Phoenix. And that's what I want to share with you today. If you watch my content on a daily basis, you know, I talk about your perspective, your vision of where you are today. I talked about it last week on last week's Friday's bullpen session. Do you view this time in history as the Time. All of your awesome momentum that you had stopped and came to a halt, and now you're blaming and shaming the pandemic and the economy for the reason you're not succeeding? Or do you use this as an opportunity to start the rest of your life? Are you using this as an opportunity to rise like a Phoenix?
Because when it feels like you are losing everything is the moment when you have nothing to lose. So I want you to take inventory of your life right now. Where are you? Are you happy with your job? If you don't have a job, what kind of job would you love to have? Is it time to start your own business? Who are you hanging around? Are they people who are lifting you up or are they people who are dragging you down? What are your hobbies? What do you love about life? This is your chance to reevaluate your everything.
Because there's no going back. There's no going back to February of 2020. If you're just sitting there and waiting for things to get back to normal, I'm here to tell you it's not going to happen. You can wait as long as you want, but the longer you wait, the farther behind you are going to be compared to everybody else who's using this as a moment of opportunity and using this as a chance to reset, reflect, recharge, and. And rise again like a Phoenix. Listen, we are all in the same boat right now. Many of us have had to pivot our business. Many of us had to pivot on a dime. Many of us had to shut one source off to start something new because we realized there's no going back. The universe has literally shifted permanently.
So my advice to you today is this. I want you to grab a new perspective on where you are in your life right now. If you are sitting there blaming, shaming, woeing, making excuses for why you're not taking action in this moment, I'm not talking about five years ago. I am talking about literally August of 2020. If you are making excuses for why you're not taking action right now, I want you to take a hard look in the mirror, and then I want you to reevaluate everything. What are your hobbies? Your job? Happy with it? Don't have one. What is it you want to build? What kind of career do you want to have? Who are your friends? Are they helping you? Are they hurting you? Literally. Take this moment to reevaluate everything in your life because you got nothing to lose. Where in your life have you not taken any risk that if you did, man, the rewards could be off the chart. But you have just been a little too afraid to jump in the deep end. You've been dipping your toe, but you don't want to jump because the shallow end is so comforting. It's so safe.
So do yourself a favor as we head into the weekend. I want you to take time this weekend. 15, 20, maybe 30 minutes. And I want you to reevaluate everything I know I've had in the last. I've had to do this in the last three months. And I am so happy that I did because I have more clarity, more confidence, more perspective on where I want to take my life, my relationship with Amy, my business. And that clarity paired with that confidence just breeds massive action. So do yourself a favor, head into the weekend, Put a smile on your face. There's a lot of bullshit going on right now, whether it's on the news, whether it's health, whether it's what's going on with this pandemic. But what you can control is your perspective. This is a huge opportunity. It is not a big challenge that is too hard for you to overcome. View it as a opportunity, Reevaluate, reflect, and start taking massive action to build the life you want to build right now. I'll say it again. When you feel like you are losing everything is the moment when you've got nothing to lose. So go out, take the time, write this out, and make this the start of the rest of your life. Because you, your family, your career, your financial success will all thank you if you did. So go, make it happen. Have a great weekend.
