The Best Video Tip?? Quit Trying to BE SOMEONE ELSE!

Andy Neary pitched worst his sophomore year at UWM when he switched techniques instead of sticking with what worked for him. He says the same thing kills video creators: trying to be someone else on camera instead of just being yourself and telling your story.

Hands down, the worst season I ever had as a pitcher was my sophomore year in college at uwm. That year, I thought it'd be a great idea to try a new pitching style called drop and drive. You see, in baseball and pitching, there's really two main styles of pitching. There's tall and fall and drop and drive. That year I changed. I was gonna try drop and drive.
One of the worst years I ever had. My stats were terrible. I am sure I looked terrible now. If you don't know what drop and drive is for you baseball diehards out there, go watch old films of David Cohn pitching to see what I mean. Drop and drive meant that before I would go, I would drop and drive and release the ball at a much lower angle, much flatter angle, making it easier for the batters to make more solid contact. When you're 5 foot 9, you want to try to be as tall as you can. It was a horrible mistake. I'm sure it was painful to watch. Most of all, wasn't me. Why do I share that? Well, that's what's happening right now. When you're trying to make videos. I hear it every single day. Video is not my thing. I disagree. Here's why. When you get behind a video camera, you're trying to be someone else. You're just not being yourself for whatever reason. When you turn your iPhone on or your camcorder or recording whatever you're using, you think you need to be somebody else. And it's painful to watch. That's why you're not doing it. My advice, Just be you. I want you to imagine that you're out having coffee with a friend when you're looking at that camera. And if your friend was to ask you advice on life, their job, whatever, and you were just yourself, you would be able to rattle off ideas and tips all day long. Just do the same thing with your videos. Just be you. Do not be somebody else. Take it from me, somebody who tried a different pitching style and it ended horribly. Don't try to be somebody else on camera. Just be you. Just share your story and I promise you, you will never make a bad connection if you just be yourself.
