A short spoken reflection by Andy Neary arguing that disagreement should not be equated with disrespect. Neary distinguishes disrespecting someone's opinion or decision from disrespecting the person, criticizes the cultural tendency to conflate disagreement with personal disrespect, and advises earning respect by aligning who you are with how you act.

To disrespect somebody based on an opinion is stupidity. We live in a society right now that teaches you if you disagree with somebody, disrespect them altogether. Disrespect who they are, what they believe, what they stand for. That is not how respect works. I can disrespect a decision you make or an opinion you have. It doesn't mean I disrespect you. I actually still like who you are. Flip side, I may disrespect you because I think you're cocky or arrogant. McMan you you're good at what you do. You've got game. I respect your game. We're being taught that if you disagree, disrespect immediately. Likewise, you want to build respect with other people. Focus on who you are and what you do and how you do things. If you want respect, make sure the who and the how line up and that is how you're going to earn respect with others. But just to disrespect somebody because you disagree is complete stupidity.
