WHY You Need a SHORT-TERM MEMORY! [Friday Bullpen Sessions Episode 16]

Andy Neary (Friday Bullpen Sessions, Episode 16) delivers an informal motivational talk about the practical value of cultivating a "short-term memory"—that is, the habit of quickly letting go of recent failures or successes so you can stay focused and take action the next day. He uses a 2010 car-accident anecdote to acknowledge occasional memory lapses, then draws sports analogies from pitching and football to show why emotional evenness (not letting highs get too high or lows get too low) matters in business and life. He opens with a brief coaching announcement and closes with calls to subscribe/share.

Hey. Hey. It is Friday. You know what that means? It is time for bullpen sessions. My name is Andy Neary and this is episode 16. This week I want to talk to you about the importance of having a short term memory. But before we dive into it, I want to make a really quick announcement. If you are a business professional or business leader and you are struggling to get your message to connect with your target audience, your team is struggling to get your message to connect with the target audience and you're feeling a little unknown right now, unseen, unheard, and you want to stand up, step out from the noise and create a personal brand for you and your business. I have put my calendar link in the comments above. I am taking on some additional one on one coaching right now. So let's connect, let's figure out where you are struggling and let's figure out a plan to help you grow your brand so you can grow your audience and grow your revenue. All right, back to the episode today. Let's talk about the importance of having a short term memory. Now what's interesting about this topic is my girlfriend often tells me that I have a terrible short term memory. In fact, I was in a fairly bad car accident back in 2010 and I still believe today that I do suffer from some short term memory loss issues. As a result of the accident, I was out for over an hour, unconscious, probably suffered a pretty big concussion at the same time. And so once in a while I tend to suffer from these short term memory lapses. Not bad, but can cause a few problems, especially in the communication between Amy and I. I just like to call it selective hearing. Right? But let's talk about the importance of having a short term memory. Now today, in this time, it's April or excuse me, May 1st, and we could agree that overall things aren't as good as they could be. You might be sitting there right now, your business isn't growing as fast as it should be. Your prospects aren't returning your calls, your prospects aren't taking meetings. Even your clients might not be getting back to you right now in a timely fashion because we are dealing with a new environment, right? And so when this is happening, when your day is surrounded by what feels like loss, it's easy, easy to get in a rut. It's easy to let your mind start wandering and it's easy to let your thoughts start to focus on the negative, the loss. I can't do this. I shouldn't do this. And we all know what thinks, what you think about comes about right? So this is where having a short term memory is so important. And I use this analogy to share with you where I believe short term memory can be very impactful for you. When I was pitching in baseball, whether it was high school, college, pro ball, having short term memory is very important for a pitcher. Especially when you just gave up a run, home run, a double that scored two runs, whatever it might be, it is so important that you get that ball back in your glove, you get back on the mound and you forget about what just happened. Literally, as a pitcher, you almost have to instantly forget about what just happened. Because if you step on that mound again and you're still thinking about that hit, that home run, that run you gave up, man, it's going to be a rough next at bat against the next hitter you are facing. And that mindset of, man, I just gave up a big hit, or man, that guy just hit a 400 foot shot off me, it could ruin your entire outing. And so it was so important as a pitcher, when I dealt with loss again, the hits, the runs, the home runs, that I immediately forgot about what just happened. And I got back to getting laser focused, staring at that catcher's mitt, getting the next sign and throwing a strike. The opposite was true. What if something great happened? I just struck out their number four hitter, full count, threw my changeup, got the guy to ground out in a double play. Something that happened to me, happened to my defense, that was awesome. I too had to quickly forget about that. Why? Because there's another batter I'm about to face. And if I get back up on the mound and I'm still thinking about the victory, man, again, it could be a rough at bat once again. So as a pitcher, you have to have this emotional even keel. You cannot let the highs get too high, you cannot let the lows get too low. And that's my advice to you today. Wherever you are, with your business, with your job, your career, you might feel like you're stuck in a rut right now. You might feel that really there is no hope right now. You could have been laid off, could have lost your job, or if you're lucky enough to still have your job or your business again, things may not be going the way you want them to. And my advice to you is have a short term memory. If yesterday was terrible, if nothing went your way, you had a client cancel on you, you had a prospect postpone a meeting, you had a prospect decide to go with somebody else, you have to get back at it today. You have to forget about what happened yesterday and you have to put your game face back on today and just keep taking action. Because in business, here's what happens. If you let the losses get to you, if you let the losses in your mind start to pile up, you're not going to take action. You're going to sit there, you're going to ponder, you're going to think about what your next step should be. Instead of actually taking the next step, you're going to start to let the self doubt creep in those. Your confidence is going to take a ding or two and all of a sudden here you are a much smaller, much worse version of the person you are. You're not taking action, you're overthinking and you are letting your mindset literally ruin your day. Remember what I said earlier, what you think about comes about. So get that short term memory in place and, and use it to your advantage. If you're feeling like you're losing right now, that's fine. Let the day go. You have tomorrow. If you had an unbelievable day, awesome. But guess what? Tomorrow's a new day. You have got to bring your game face back to tomorrow because it is a new day. And if you don't let yourself come down from the winds from yesterday a little bit, that could actually negatively impact your today. I always think about some of the former great football players. It's like scoring a touchdown in the NFL, right? Think about the guys we admired in the past, the Emmett Smiths, the Barry Sanders. When they scored a touchdown, they gave the ball right back to the referee, right. They acted like they had been there before. You see the guys scoring touchdowns today and yes, I know, it's all part of the act. They act like they have never been in that end zone at all.
So when you have a great day, you have those wins, Celebrate them, it's okay. Celebrate them in the moment, but act like you have been there. Because tomorrow is a new day again. Don't let the highs get too high, don't let the lows get too low. Have a short term memory and bring your best to every single day that you have been given. That's the one thing we should be grateful for right now. The sun always comes up, there's always a tomorrow and you have another chance to do something amazing. So my final piece of advice for you again is if you aren't in the best mindset right now, you feel like your business, your personal life is dealing with a lot of losses. Let it go. Yesterday is gone. It's in the past. Today's a new day. Get back out there, put a smile on their face. You have one. There's one person in this world you know you can impact. There's one person you know in this world you can change their life. That is the mission you need to be on. So get your game face back on. Today's a new day. You have another 24 hour to do something amazing. Well, that's it for this week. I hope you liked it. If you are finding the bullpen sessions to be valuable, all I ask is you go to itunes, you go to Spotify, you subscribe, give me a five star rating. I'd be very grateful for that. If you know of anybody who would find these episodes valuable, please share it with them. I'm excited. We're going to have some additional content, some additional interviews coming down the road. So take care, have a great weekend and we will see you next week.
