Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, Healthy Soul = Healthy Business | 7FAS Podcast | Ep. 297

A recorded conversation (7FAS Podcast Ep. 297) between hosts Caleb and guest Chad Owen about how physical, mental, relational, and spiritual health underpin business longevity. Chad recounts a recent cardiovascular health scare (calcium score and blocked arteries), his family and medical history (type 2 diabetes, daughter’s brain aneurysm, prior throat surgery, wife’s skin cancer), the emotional impact of the diagnosis, and practical priorities: slowing down, preserving relationships, finding restorative hobbies (fishing, woodworking, travel), and planning succession for clients. Caleb adds perspective on high-achiever tendencies, the need to accept temporary rest, and prioritizing health during growth phases.

So if you want to have a healthy business, you need to have a healthy body, a healthy mind, and a healthy soul. And, Chad, that's. That's pretty recent. That's. That's one of those things that hits home as of the last couple of weeks. Would you. Would you share with us just a little bit about your world right now?
I just skinned my knee. It hasn't over yet, and you're already picking at it. Way to go.
Yeah.
I'm telling you, it's. It's been a rough road recently because I had this calcium score test, and by the way, my LinkedIn community. Oh, my gosh, you guys are incredible. I've had encouraging words. I've had people literally messaging me. I've had, you know, hey, this is what I went through. I did have one lady go, though. Yeah, this was really bad and gave me a bad testimony. So. But I'm very encouraged. Like, one guy actually just yesterday replied back and said, hey, you know what? I had the same thing. It was 10 years ago. I had a stamp put in. And, you know, long story short, the heart's an amazing thing. It can figure out how to reroute and. And get around some issues. And, you know, I got this calcium score, and bad is 400. Well, mine was 1400, so that was really bad. The good news is the widowmaker, which is the one that goes directly into the heart, that's the first one. That's the one that literally is the bad, bad one. There's no calcium in that, but I have some that are six over 600. I have some over 400. I have another. That's 200. And so it is. It's a scary thing because you're sitting there going, I built this entire dream and empire off of helping others, but if you don't have your health, you can't help anybody. You know, we. We crossed the ocean on a sailboat when I was 11 years old, and we did charter business. So we basically took the same sailboat that we crossed from Washington state to Hawaii on a sailboat, and then we turned it into a charter boat. And we used to have people out snorkeling, and, you know, they'd get out there. And we were always taught, you can't save a drowning person if you're dead. So in other words, you throw out the floaty thing first to them so they can grab onto it so they're stable, and then you go out to try and rescue them. Because if you jump out there with them, them, and they're Drowning, they will most likely drown you. And you know, it's, it's a fact. So if I'm trying to help others right now, but I can't get my health under control, and I can't. I have health issues. You know, mine stems from, you know, unfortunately, my genetic pool has not been that great. So the people before me, I don't have a great family history. But, you know, you have to take care of yourself. And, and I feel relationally we've done phenomenal at that. You know, when I say we, I'm always included my wife in that. We have built a family, a network. We have great friends, we have people that have been around us for years. We have our kids that like just yesterday on a Monday, I stopped making calls and I, at 2:30, I went fishing with my daughter and she's 29 years old and she's literally going, dad, will you go fishing with me? I'm like, of course I will. You know, but it's, it's realizing what's important.
Yeah.
And the health scare really gets you kind of back around to what's important, you know, but remember, it doesn't do anything. It doesn't do any good whatsoever if you build this. We talk about this all the time. I mean, you know the title of my book, Stress and Rocking Chairs, Two common killers of seniors. Stress kills you because you worry about things, decrease, decreases the quality of life. It can cause heart issues, it can cause mental issues, it can cause all sorts of anxiety. It can cause all these things. But the rocking chair, you know, the rocking chair can get you in two ways. Number one, you don't have the money to do something or you don't have the health to do something. So, yeah, it's very important. It's something to really look at and assess consistently. And you know, literally for the past two years, I've had you, I've had Josh, I've had my wife say, hey, you know what? You're pushing too hard. 70 to 80 hours a week. That's too much. And yeah, it is. I, I don't know, I still am not fully 100% with that because I think there's a lot of. Well, especially when you're younger, you know, to build something, it takes a lot of extra time. I've said this many, many times. The 40 hour workweek is not in the Bible. Nowhere you would get up when the sun came up and often before the sun would come up and you would come home or when the sun would be down and they did Six day work weeks. Now, I'm not saying we do that, you know, because. But the reality is it takes a lot to build, but when you start to get in your 50s, your body doesn't like to cooperate as well as it did when you're in your 20s and your 30s, so.
Right.
Yeah.
Well. And what are your thoughts?
I mean.
Yeah, and it's.
You just, you've got that 16 year old heart, you know, I mean, it's like you still got everything working for you.
I have had it tested because of my family history. I mean, the heart stuff, you know, for, for, for my family is. Yeah. I mean, it's near and dear to the heart because of, of, you know, the, the stories there and, and whatnot. But I've had mine tested and it has come back. You know, it's. Structurally, it's fine. Functionally, it's fine. And, and for me now it's like, okay, well, what do I need?
A little black though? Yeah, it's dark. I'm teasing. You are. You're one of the nicest.
It's okay.
Oh, that's funny. But, but it is, it's one of those things. It's like, it's, it's easy. And I think it's easy for high achievers in general, Chad. And when you, when you have this sense of ownership over what you're trying to build, and it's not just in the office, it's not just in the workplace, but it's a life. Right. When you have this ownership and you're taking responsibility for the dreams that you have and the visions that you have and the generations to come after you, it can apply a pressure and a weight that is both motivating and also, if it's not managed the right way, can be detrimental. And so for me, it's like, well, I know the history that I've got and right now everything's all good. And it's like, I don't want to get to the point where, you know, I'm, I'm Chad's age and, and because in my young years I chose to, you know, ignore being healthy, it comes back to get me later. And so it's like there are, there are things. I, I just think it's, it's important for people to just prioritize it. And it's been a while since we've done a podcast about anything related to this. I mean, everything has been so practical and product and sales and all this stuff. And it's like, well, when you have a health Scare. It hits close to home. It almost puts the things in perspective. And it's like, this is. This is as important to talk about as anything, you know, quote unquote, practically.
So for sure, as I hear you talking, I'm reminding the story in the Bible. Or this prophet comes up to David the king and says, you know, tells the story of the little lamb. Do you remember that basically David, this is after he committed adultery with his best friend's wife and then as best friend killed Uriah. So then the prophet goes to David and goes, there's a story of a little lamb. And this family had this little lamb and they loved it, they cared for it, they took care of it. And all sudden this wealthy landowner that had tons of sheep basically came in and took that lamb and slaughtered it and ate it for himself and kept it. And David's like. And the prophet goes, do you not feel. Do you not see who he's talking about? And David's like, no. And then I'm. I'm ad libbing a lot. And the prophet goes, it is you. You're the one that took that lamb. You took another man's wife and blah, blah, blah. So I feel like you are doing the exact same thing. Talking about health. When you eat Cane's chicken fried chicken all the time, you keep doing that, man, you're in trouble.
It's like you slowed it down a lot.
Have you went to what, yeah, five times a week now?
No, my goodness. I go maybe once a month.
Okay, good.
But it is my favorite place to eat. It is definitely my favorite place.
But is that just Cane's chicken or did you really cut back all fried chicken to, like, once?
It's. It's all. Yeah, I cut back all the fried stuff. It's. And it's mainly because of the oils in it. Yeah, yeah. The grease and the oils. It's. Yeah, it does a number on you. Not just, not just your heart and your arteries and the cardiovascular and fat and all that, but. But hormones. All of it. Yeah. It's kind of wild.
You haven't even finished your full cycle of hormones yet.
But, you know, it's so true because, you know, I think about when I was in my 20s, I did not eat good at all. Yeah, I just, I didn't even think about it. You feel invincible, right? I can eat whatever I want, do whatever I want. And when I. When I first got married, they call it the newlywed 20. I did the newlywed 60 because there's this Chinese food place I worked in the jewelry business. There's this Chinese food place called Wo Fat. And I didn't catch the name till I was like, whoa, I'm fat. It's like I just gained a lot of weight. And I'm going, it was right in the name of the restaurant. But you don't think about it. And you know, I have some underlying health issues, such as type 2 diabetes that happened because of a stress induced. And it's. You guys know my story, most of you do, about my daughter having a brain aneurysm. I had throat surgery. My wife found that she had skin cancer. We were $150,000 in credit card debt. That all hit at once. And anchors decided, forget you. So I didn't have a lot of control of that. But from that point on, if I would have really started to take things serious and watch really carefully what I eat for the past 10 years, I, I consider myself very careful about what I eat. But now I have to go even to a whole nother level, you know, and so I think, you know, and, and I even tell people this, you know this, that we're talking about the physical health. But I even tell my clients this. I say, hey, you know what? You have my cel phone number. But if I'm on a date with my wife, out with my family, in appointment at church, or sleeping, I do not answer that phone. That's the relational health too, that we got to make sure we're taking care of. Because, you know, everybody knows someone who's gotten a divorce, and especially when you have a business, you know, a lot of divorces will actually destroy everything you've built up in many areas. We're not just talking financially. I mean, forget the money in that situation. We're talking families, kids. You know, you're. The fact that when you got married, you had this covenant that you made and it got broken, you know, and I'm not being condemning by any means. I mean, things. We all have done, things that we're like going, God, it was stupid. Why didn't I fix that? Why didn't I catch that ahead of time? So my point is, if you're not relationally or physically capable of helping your clients, because remember, when we're helping someone with an annuity, when we're helping someone with retirement, it is a lifetime commitment. Like, you know this, I've said this. You found this out about two years after I was saying it. But if you ever get a call from Caleb, that means I'm dead, you know, and Caleb's like When were you going to tell me about this? You know, but it's a fact. I knew I had to have someone younger that if. If they needed help. And I also knew too, that that would help Caleb a lot, too, because, you know, we know that people do pass away. We know that brothers or sisters or family members or co workers, they need help. And if I'm not around, I need to know I have someone there that is capable, more than capable of taking care of them. So I plan for that. But in my mind, in my heart, one of my mentors, he's mid-70s now and he still takes calls from his. His clients. Now his client pool is dropping dramatically because he's now mid-70s. But, you know, which is also kind of a surreal kind of feeling when you realize your phone used to ring all the time and now it's ringing less and less because your client base is disappearing. So.
Yep, crazy.
But this is a great topic, Caleb, because it isn't. All the stuff we teach means nothing if you don't have good health and good relationships. Relationships.
It's true. And you know, Chad, you and I, we can train on annuities and talk about that until we're blue in the face and we're experts in it. And I wouldn't sit here and say that we're going to give you some coaching on the next big health thing that you need to be implementing today, but it's more of a call to awareness. You know, are you taking care of yourself in the season? And I think about too, even, you know, young guys, young women, building, trying to build a business, it's like, it is a grind and it is hard work, but you've got to make sure you are still in the midst of that, prioritizing your physical health, your mental health, your. Your soul, your relationships, all those kinds of things. Because if you don't prioritize it in the building, then it's not going to be there when it's built.
You know, I, someone I care dearly about came up with a term called eternal life insurance. And you guys know we're Christ. And I think about the eternal health as well. You know, I'm building for eternity. I'm building for other people's eternity. And the more I do right now, the more I help right now, the more ministries I can support, the more charities we can help, the better it is for everybody. And we truly, you know, my personal belief, and it says in the Bible, we don't know how many people we have influenced or impacted till we actually get to heaven. And so, you know, that's. There's another weight there and there shouldn't be. I mean, I know we're not supposed to carry this weight. We're not designed to carry this weight. My wife and I were talking. We do this about every week. We just go, me and her, we go somewhere and we check out new cities and we look at, you know, our surrounding areas. We play tourists all around us. And she goes, you know, it's interesting with the amount of bombardment we have between social media, the news, between stories all around the world, you think about 200 years ago, you didn't know what was going on in China and Russia, and you didn't know, you know, information was. Things were still happening, bad things were still happening. But when you turn on the news or you look at social media, you get bombarded with all of this at once. And we're not designed and are not designed to handle that kind of information overload.
Right?
And so I think it's so important. I think one of the number one things that keeps us healthy is great relationships. Of course, that's a huge thing. Watching what we eat, making sure we have time for quiet. In other words, just if you're married, getting out with your spouse, you know, you just literally going out, just you and them, you know, going out and just enjoying stillness. And then, of course, taking your. Your own time, minus fishing, mines, mountains, mine's water. You know, if I can get around there and I can just sit there, whether I'm catching a fish or not. It's just the stillness that's really important to me. So you have to find out what is your area. Another thing I love doing is woodworking. You know, I. Unfortunately, where we are right now, we live in a neighborhood that bringing a chainsaw would not be a good thing, but in our new house, we'll be able to do that. But it's. What is your area where you can kind of just get away and. And be. And I think the more you do that, Leilani and I love to travel. We're in a. We're in a season where we know we're not going to be traveling much. We'll do short trips, but we're not doing any major long trips that we know of. But part of that is, you know, that was our getaway. I'd work really hard, and then we'd take a week or two to just go travel the world. Three weeks go travel the world.
And.
And that was my getaway. So I think, once again, we have to look at what is your release. And some people would say it's shooting. Some people it's race cars. Some people it's quilting. Some people crochet. I mean, didn't you. You took up crocheting or something for a short time, didn't you?
I was going to be a part of a knitting club in high school.
Knitting, yeah.
Yeah. It didn't end up turning into anything. There was only like a few people that were actually interested in and I happened to be one of them.
Gee, I wonder why that didn't grab. I wonder why.
I don't know. My problem is I love learning new things. I love learning new hobbies. Like this year I've started hand rolling cigars, which is an ironic thing to talk about on.
Being healthy.
And I've really started getting into golf. I really enjoyed playing golf as of late. And anyways, I just.
Both of those can kill you, though, just so you know. Both of those can kill you and.
Kill the bike too.
Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. Golf. Golf can set you back a little bit. But I mean, if you treat golf right, like when I go out. Yeah. Sometimes it can be stressful, but if I'm literally just, hey, you know what? How I'm going to hit that ball is how I'm going to hit that ball. Yes, I want to be better, but I'm not playing for money. I'm never going to be a pro. You know, I. It's beautiful scenery, you know, So I. I think when we look at that, what is your release? That's really what it comes down to. And we want to help people. Not just financially, but we want to help people be healthy and be able to enjoy what we're doing. So I hope this helps you guys. Oh, yeah, go ahead. Of course.
Well, I just want to say I will. I will acknowledge that I think there is a type of individual and Chad, you're this type of individual where in the disconnection, in the relaxation, there can almost be another element of stress involved because it feels like I need to be doing something productive. I need to be doing something that's advancing. I have to be pushing and grinding and constantly going and, you know, I just want to encourage you and Shadow Hope, you know, with everything that's transpired in the last couple weeks that, that, you know, it's helped get to this place. But it's like you got to get to a point where you're okay with the uncomfortability of drawing back for the sake of pushing forward in the right time, at the right time, for the right amount of time and in the right way. It's like you've got to be okay with filling up the car if you don't ever stop at the gas station. It feels like you're not going anywhere when you're at the gas station, because you're not. But it's necessary to go the next hundred miles. And so anyway, really well put.
That's really, really well put. And we'll end on that because that. That is really. I take that to heart fully. So I hope this helps you guys. Great day. Have a great day. And, of course, happy resting.
Yeah. Sam.
