On this week's episode, we are going to talk about the importance of recharging and taking time to get away and relax.
Hey, everyone. Welcome back to this week's episode. I am Chad Owen, the host of this show. The host with the most. The mostest with a hostess. Oh, my wife was a hostess when I actually met her.
She was the hostess with the mostest. She still is.
She favorite story is that she actually sat Kenny G to a table at Kinsha.
That's your favorite story? Well, of that, mine was. What was his name? Akibono, which was a huge sumo wrestler at the time, having to use the restroom downstairs because he couldn't fit into the other restrooms in the hotel.
That's awesome.
Yeah, that's awesome.
Awesome.
And he was huge. Yeah, he's a big dude. Big dude. I just love Kenny G. Okay, so I got a deal. Kenny G versus Akebono. Well, in a sumo match. And he can keep his little saxophone. Let's see who wins. Okay, let's just.
I feel like you could whack him with the saxophone, but it wouldn't even feel. Feel it.
No.
That'S actually one of my guilty pleasures. I love watching sumo. Really? Yes, I do. Because this sheer outfit for you.
Right?
Okay. And my sidekick, Caleb North Robin, AKA the Wonder boy, or Boy Wonder. Sorry, boy.
Sorry. That one was just wide open.
That had way too.
It's a little off color.
Way off color. Anyway, go ahead. What are we.
What are you.
What are you going to try and bring to the table?
Well, I had to poke a little fun because at this point in time, as this podcast is getting released, you are actually currently on the road somewhere in West Texas or New Mexico or Arizona.
West Texas. I'm actually going to be in on Monday. See, I'm driving straight from Friday, I will leave and I'm going to Carlsbad. So Saturday I will be in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Okay.
Yeah. And then I'm going to the White Sands, and then I'm hitting a huge wilderness area where I'm just going to look at really cool rock formations. And I'm just. I. It's just me and God for five days.
There you go.
What is it? Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. So actually almost seven days because I meet Leilani in Arizona where we're going to her grandmother's memorial. But it's. It's. It's once again just a crazy year, man. Some of these things that went on, we've had. Let's see, my mom passed away right before Christmas, her grandma passed away. We had to put our dog down, which. We've had that dog for 15 and a half, almost 16 years. And that is just heart wrenching. I've had clients die. I mean, it's just. This has been a challenge. So. And this is the longest time I've ever went without not actually getting away.
Right.
And you know, it's funny, I need it. Like I can feel it inside of me even now, like, okay, I got to get away. And I have never had a time where I just went away by myself.
Okay.
That I can ever remember. Definitely. For not. I mean, maybe I went on a fishing trip down to the bay or down to the Gulf. Maybe just me, but even that I can't recall. But getting away for six days, just me, that's. I. I'm really expecting a lot from this. Yeah.
Well, that was one of the things I wanted to ask you is like, what are you, what are you excited about for this trip?
Right.
When we're pre recording this. Right. So Chad is. As you're listening to this, Chad is on the road enjoying. I will.
Yeah, I will probably be in the wilderness area in northwestern New Mexico.
And I'll be in the office.
Yeah, I mean, if you guys go on my. Yes, you will. Going on Facebook or my Facebook or Instagram, I'm gonna. I know I'm gonna have some pretty sick pictures. I mean, I've already, I've researched this to the fullest. And one of the things I love doing, like I literally can sit on the side of a hill for two hours waiting for the right picture at the right time with the right lighting or waiting for that animal to just turn the right direction and I get that shot. That's just. I love doing that. But this time I bring in a GoPro, I'm bringing my drone. We'll see. I mean. Or I may end up in the middle of the desert with, you know, lost. No. Yeah. I shouldn't say that. My wife is so concerned, honestly, because she goes. She said if you ask her what her job is, she's always been a stay at home mom, but since the kids are kind of grown, her number one job is to keep me alive. And she goes, you're going to be out six days away from me with no accountability to your safety. And. And so she's already going, hon, please don't, you know, look at your phone when you're driving with. That's not going to be a problem because that phone is going to be on silent except for you Know how you have the emergency numbers, right? Yeah. Obviously they'll be able to call and minor circle people, they can still get through. Clients, they can still get through, but I'm out. You're out?
I'm locked.
Yep.
Yeah, out.
Well, like, what do you mean, taking your call. I might take your call. I'll decide.
Oh, I was saying. Yeah, I was gonna say. Yeah, Chad's not gonna answer the phone for me.
No, I might. Because you have direct contact with agents. It's something really important. It's not because of your well being.
It's because we have other people that we need to.
We have other people that might need to talk to me. Yeah. But no, I'm gonna be. I'm gonna try and be really deliberate on this one.
It's gonna be.
That's one of the reasons I love cruises, because cruises, you know, you. Well, now you can. But when we first started cruising, there was no cell phone, no Internet. I mean, you. I used to send pastors like a husband and wife away on cruises because why, nobody could reach them.
Right.
And, you know, now they have Internet there, which I still keep mine on, surely for the fact if I have a client that says, hey, index allocation statement came in, what do I need to do? Or if there's someone who had a death, you know, I'll take care of that. But for the most part, this is. I'm gonna be fully disconnected in this one, I think, obviously, except for emergencies, important people. Well, and now that I'm not saying you're not important. Oh, my gosh. Everybody's got to balance everything.
There's this. There's this, I guess this balancing act of disconnect to connect. Right. It's almost like you need to unplug so that you can get filled up or like, plug in. Right. And so you need to unplug from work. You need unplug from, you know, the constant pulling and the pouring out so that you can be filled up. And that's one of the things that I wanted to focus on and highlight in this was that, man, agents, sometimes you need to just take a break. You need to get away. I don't believe burnout comes from doing too much. I fully believe burnout comes from doing too little of the things that fill you up. Yeah.
I think burnout also comes when you're not. You don't have a true purpose behind what you're doing and a passion for it, because it's really hard. I don't know if I've ever had a quote Unquote, burnout.
Right.
You know, I don't know if I've ever. And I've. I mean, I've worked 110 hours a week.
Yeah. Draining jobs, too.
Yeah, I've had some, you know, sometimes. I mean, I just had, what, 85 hour work week. And actually probably more than that just recently. And. But, you know, that's not the norm. The norm is between 60 and 70. And that's kind of my health. I mean, I feel comfortable with that. I don't feel tired with that because, you know, I'm incredibly deliberate. My wife and I, on Saturdays we just go and just meet her. Date day, we just get away. And then usually on Sunday we have family over, we have you guys over, and we just get to hang out and have fun. But, man, when I'm working during the week, that's something I'm passionate about.
Right.
You know, even if I have to do this and then I go teach a business class after that. Still something I'm incredibly passionate about. It's when I get home sometimes and I'm just like headfirst into the bed or the couch and I'm like, oh, boy, I'm tired.
Yeah. But it hits you all of a sudden.
It does, yeah, it does catch up a little bit. But that's, that's not because the mind's weak. It's because the body just says, forget you. You know, but that's also why I started working out again. You know, I really, I got it. I mean, I'm turning 49, man. I know people are like, oh, my gosh, that's not old. I'm 75.
Right.
I totally agree with that. But. But there's not many people my age that. I mean, I own seven companies and so I have a phenomenal team. Obviously, if an agent calls you trying to figure out what product to use, I mean, I'm not even remotely concerned. An agent calls you and wants training, I don't even have to think about it. But it's still always there. But yeah, absolutely. Getting away, disconnecting, spending time. I even asked the guys here at work, say, when's the last time you took your wife on a date? You know, because it's so important to keep that relationship balance. Married for 29 years and love, absolutely love being married to my wife. I love coming home to her. I know she's stopping by here. I get excited because she's going to stop by. Why? We're incredibly intentional about working on our relationship all the time.
You have to be, because That's a.
Form of rest too.
Yeah, it is.
You know, when I'm around with my family and I'm with my wife, I can rest.
Right. Well, that's the thing is like I could work a full day, you know, and then want to go load up a kayak and haul a kayak down to the water and then get in the water and then paddle the kayak, whether that's upstream, against the wind, whatever that looks like, just to be outside and enjoying it. It's more work, it's laborious to do.
It's even better when your wife's there.
It is even better. But the point is. Well, it is always better. But the point is that it's. Even though it's something that may still be taking something, it's giving more than it's pulling out of me for you to go and I mean, you drive how many hundreds of miles?
You know what? This year I've averaged, averaged almost a thousand a week this year.
Right. And now you're going to go drive to Arizona.
But it's going to recharge you mileage thing is it click, click, click, click, click, click. I'm going, oh my gosh.
What yours is like at 18. It's got like a hundred thousand miles.
117.
Oh my goodness.
It's four year old truck. Yeah, it's unreal. But this year has been a lot. I don't know what it is. I have long distances between appointments and you know me, I try and schedule everything pretty. But I don't know what it is. It's fine. Yeah, I like it because once again, even, even with my drive time, that's also my rest time too. That's when I listen to audiobooks, my podcast, the Bible, you know, worship music. That's where I'm to kind of me and God time as well. And sometimes you need that in between appointments.
Oh, absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. It's almost like a little mini, mini disconnect, so to speak. What I was going to say is every living thing requires rest. Right. And it is impossible for human beings to function at our peak if we're not at our best mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually. All the things that end in Lee are, um, it's. We can't, we can't function at our, at our peak if those aren't in.
Good order for sure.
So it's almost like for you to go and take a week and go and do this.
I mean, what really think about this. If I make it, if I'm writing a million A week in annuities. What does this trip costing me?
A lot more than the cost of the trip.
Yes, but what does it cost me if I don't?
If you don't. And that's the thing is. So. Okay, so the argument could be, well, Chad, you shouldn't go. Take this week. Think about all the business you could write. It's like, okay, yeah, maybe I write the business then. But then what happens the next week when I'm feeling the weight of it? What happens in two weeks when I write a third of what I could because I'm feeling it.
I had a client one time and I looked in his front yard and his beautiful fifth wheel and he had these utvs and he had jet skis in the back. But getting an appointment with him was incredibly difficult, right? And I'm like, why? Why is it so hard? He goes, I gotta work to pay for these toys. And I said, how often do you get out and use that stuff? And he goes, hardly ever because I'm working to pay for him. Like, wait a second, you got a fifth wheel, you got TVs, you got jet skis back there. I said, how often do you get out there? And he goes, I maybe use these maybe two to three times a year. Yeah, I'm just like this just insane to me. You know, you've got to take moments to enjoy what you do. I mean, my slogan is I spend 25% of my year retired. And that's because every month to month and a half, my wife and I take a week to three week trip. And that is a normal thing. But it's not that I'm not gonna do it. Like probably August, I will be gone probably the entire month of August, have a thing in Colorado. And then we're going up to Alaska for 10 days and then Leilani are going to rent a RV after that in Alaska and just drive. Where we don't know, I'll know.
Yeah, it's almost like if you're going to, if you're going to do the time, you're going to take the time to do it. You want it to be the best, right? You want to see the things, you want to do the stuff.
I want to dip my toe in the Antarctic.
Yeah.
I don't think there's a road that actually goes up there though.
I don't know.
I need to watch Ice Road, Ice Road Truck, see if there's a road up there that I don't know about.
2020 was a, was a case in point for the Importance of recharging for you specifically because you had a really strong first half. I mean you had a. January was slow about a million. Then you had, you know, over a three million dollar February, almost a three million dollar March. April tapered down a little bit. Then you had your record month ever in May, did a 9.44 in May alone.
I would love to have another month, 9 million dollar month.
But that was. So that was just a couple months after Covid hit. And then when you look at your numbers for 2020 as Covid hit, you didn't really do any kind of traveling like you did some staycations here and there.
But.
But even that, like it wasn't. It's just not the same.
No. Because I found that if I'm in Texas, with the exception of our Saturdays where we just get away, um, I don't disconnect.
Yeah.
I mean it's.
I don't want to be here and, and not be thinking about what you've got to do.
Yeah, that's so true. But yeah, my numbers crashed pretty hard.
You didn't have a single month, with the exception of July where you hit 2 million on the nose. You didn't have another $2 million a month. Every other month was less than 2 million.
Yeah. And this year, and then I actually had one, two. I had two, basically three that were a million or under.
Right?
Yeah.
And then when you look at that in contrast, in 2021, when you had the ability to take your trips and do the things that you wanted to, you were consistently two to three plus a month over the course of 2021. So it is amazing. And guys, that's. I say that to show like Chad's process is as consistent as any. Like from call to appointment to fact finding. I mean it is, it is such a consistent process. The variances in his numbers, it's not, it's not a. Well, this client's different than the other. It's, it's. It doesn't matter, right, that there's consistency in the process. There's consistency in the results. When we look at these numbers and we see the effect of a lack of rest and recharge, it's going to transpire to anybody and everybody.
My relationships, you know, you can have the finest engine in the entire world, but if you don't have oil in it, it's going to seize up. Yeah. And my quality time with the people I love most, that is the lubricant. That's what keeps me going. That's what keeps My drive, my momentum, the passion, you know, I see. I mean, what good is it once again if you can't, you know, when we had to go to Disney World and the kids are just loving life and having fun and it's, you know, things like that, I charge, I get recharged by that.
Right.
And so this is going to be an interesting one. Just by my side.
By yourself?
Yeah. I. I'll either love it or hate it.
Yeah.
You know, I. We'll see.
I think. I think you'll.
Well, never mind. We'll see. We'll see how it plays out. I think it's going to be really good for you. I think it's going to bear a lot of result. And again, guys, that's the point of the, of the getaway is not for the sake of the results that come later. The point of the getaway is the getaway, but the getaway will bear increased results later. So if you're feeling the weight, you're feeling the pressure, you're feeling burnout start to creep in. Do what you need to do to do the things that fill you up so that you can come back full.
Recheck your passion.
I constantly am. This is why I do what I do. I think of my family, I think of my wife. Think of the people we're able to support, the ministries we're able to support, the testimonies we get back from people, you know, that's really awesome. And then of course, once I'm away and we're just doing something, I literally will sit and just absorb the environment. We are. I mean, you know, our vacations, you're like, I've never seen any people vacation.
Like you guys go, go all the time.
Because we go when we're going, we always stop. Look at this. I mean, we see some beautiful things. When we were on Maui, we went and saw Eel Valley. You weren't on that one, but we saw.
The black sand beach. We did the road to Hana. Remember, it's the road to Hana.
Not Hana.
There's nothing in Hana Point is the journey. The journey, absolutely. But, you know, even when you're in the big island, you know, we went to the volcano and we just. We absorb the, the environment and the local culture that's around. And eat a lot.
Oh, yeah, yeah. Which simultaneously translates to the need to sleep. But you're vacationing with Chad, so you don't have that opportunity.
You sleep while I'm driving.
Good luck. I think I'm thinking of that road to Hana when I'm like, oh man, listen, it's not your driving, honestly, that is the road. It's, you've got switchbacks that are as.
A driver, you get motion sickness.
I mean, it was something else crazy.
Amount of turns and bridges.
Well, that's all I have for them today. And I know we've, we've hit our, we've hit our time and I want to just take away. I know there's not. If you apply what you've heard in this episode, it will have impact into.
Your one, here's the reality. If you're right not writing good annuity business, you're not going to be able to take time off, you know, so it's a vicious cycle. You know, it's like I said, 2 million and under pays the bills. 3 million to 5 million creates a lifestyle. 5 million above creates a legacy. And I'm not just talking a legacy for me. I'm talking about legacy for people I care about and love. My clients, my clients realize that now they can out never outlive their income protected from market volatility. I mean, there are so many benefits to this particular business.
Oh yeah. So we love it.
Okay. I appreciate you guys. You have a great day and of course, happy selling.
