No more victim mentality

April Mason describes her 2007 back surgery and how she rejected thoughts of victimhood in the hospital, choosing instead to trust God over doctors' reports. She lists past traumas—molestation, rape, domestic violence, homelessness—and says she refuses to let them define her. Her message: stop the pity party and live victoriously.

Hey everyone, it's your girl April Mason here, and I just pulled up to the hospital. For those of you that did not know, in 2007 I had a 9-hour back surgery. Uh, one of my discs deteriorated and they removed it. I think I was 32 years old at the time. They removed it and placed a piece of titanium in there, and I'm kind of fused back together with 4 screws. And long story short, unforgiveness caused my health problems. God let me know that as I was in the hospital for 7 days, and he was dealing with me on unforgiveness. So one day I may tell a story on my health conditions that I caused due to unforgiveness. But I'm here because I've been having some problems in my lower back, and I've started feeling some tingling in my leg. And so I'm here to go through some x-rays to make sure everything and every screw is still in place. But as I was sitting here, the enemy automatically tried to put in thoughts of victim and pity party for myself. Oh, you know, what happens if this goes wrong? What happens if that goes wrong? Who's going to make sure my kids are taken care of? And all of this stuff. And then I had to catch myself and say, April, why are you going to allow the pity party thoughts to even take hold of your mind? We can no longer play the victim and take on a victim mentality. We can no longer get doctor's reports and believe just what the doctor says. We have to understand, as children of God, we have to believe what the word says. Yes, we will acknowledge that there might be something wrong, or we can even acknowledge our past, but we will not be held victim to our past and play the pity party. I realize sometimes we like to replay or hold on to the circumstance, but we won't embrace the solution. Because some of us really, really like being the victim and having people feel sorry for us. No longer will we do that. That's a trick of the enemy. And what happens is you start to create situations or replaying situations in your mind, and all of a sudden your attitude changes, your mood changes, your emotions are all out of whack. For the last, uh, 2-3 weeks, we've been talking about fear and emotions in our life coaching class. If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, I need you to join me. Go to AprilMasonSpeaks.com. It's absolutely free and we have a really good time in there. But we've been dealing actually from the inception of class in February, we've been dealing with fear and emotions and mindset changes. We need a true renewal of the mind. Forget what you thought you knew and go back to what the word says. We can no longer say that we are Christians and we have a victim mentality, but yet we want to scream we're victorious. How are you victorious with a mindset of defeat, with a mindset of pity party, with the mindset of victim mentality? I've gone through hell in my life. For those of y'all, you guys know the story, you— but I refuse to let me living in a shelter, for me dealing with 12 years of molestation, for me having to deal with rape and domestic violence to where you wouldn't recognize the left side of my face, a divorce— I refuse to let those things— oh, let me tell you, failed businesses. I remember losing my 8-bedroom home. That I had worked so hard to obtain, car repossessions in the past. I refuse to allow myself to have a victim mentality because what happens is when you start to see yourself as the victim, you start having pity parties, and from there you don't— you're not being productive, and from there you lose hope. We can't allow ourselves to lose hope because hope is the only thing that we have to hold on to. There is hope in Jesus Christ. And when you take off of what you thought you knew and stop playing the victim, that's when God can open up doors. When you start let— stop letting people get to your emotions, stop giving your emotions away, stop operating from a place of what happened was in the past and what it looks like. Every— just because something looks familiar doesn't mean it's going to end the same. Sometimes God will allow same situations use different people just to see if you're going to have your faith and trust God. This is what you, you have for me, so you can see it out to the end. And then you realize this is not the same, but we didn't pass the test. It's a possibility we didn't pass the test the first time. So it might look the same, but I can guarantee you, if you trusted and hold in God and you know you heard from God, the end result is not going to be the same. So the enemy will always use previous things to try to, try to hinder us. Have you noticed you might go through the same stuff, but it's just with different people, and you wonder how— why am I going through this perpetual cycle? It's because you have not understood that you can pass the test, but you have to hold on to the end. If you're saying you trust God, you cannot be a believer that has an issue with believing. Period. It doesn't work. You can't say the church clichés and all the shout the people and do all of these things, but you do not really totally believe in what you say. If you're worrying, you are already out of line, out of pocket. Saints are not supposed to worry. Yes, we may have some concerns about things, but when you understand that God is your covering and is your Father, he's not going to let you down. Praise him for every open door and praise him for every shut window at the same time. There's some things he might be trying to save you from, but also there's some things that he's trying to deliver you from by putting you in situations that look the same. But he wants to see if you're going to hold on to what he said and hold on to your faith to see that the end is not the same. So no more victim mentality, people. We are not going to, uh, play that game anymore. No more victim mentality. No more, um, trying to have, you know, allow ourselves to have pity party on ourselves. And we're going to live. We're not going to live in fear. We're going to live in faith. 100%. 100%. No more of the victim mentality. So what, um, you lost the job and it was your favorite job? So what, you lost the house? So what, the relationship didn't work? So what, the business failed? It's okay. Don't waddle in it and stop, by all means, replaying it in your mind because you will cause your own depression. You will cause your own anxiety because you keep replaying playing the past in your mind. Scripture talks about forgetting those things which are behind. No, we don't forget that they happen, but we do not let them have us. We learn from them, but we keep moving forward. So tell yourself today, I will not— April Mason said, I cannot have the victim mentality anymore in my life, because the victim mentality pity party has been holding you back. I know what the doctor said, and we, we don't, we don't want to put more faith in the doctors than we do in God. We don't want to hear what the doctor said. The doctor said, but what does God say? You cannot be a believer and have an issue with believing. Either you're going to believe or you're not. Love you guys. Remember, no more victim mentality. You are a conqueror, but a conqueror is a person that refuses to be a victim. Don't be a believer that has an issue with believing. Either, either you're going to trust God 100% or you're not. If you're not going to trust him 100%, there's no need for you to be a Christian. What's the point? Talk to you soon.
