The power in leaning back and letting a man lead

In this live (replay) session, host April greets a large, interactive Facebook audience, reminding viewers to enable notifications and engage with each other. She introduces the central theme of the talk: the importance for women to "lean back" and allow men to lead in dating and relationships. April argues that many women, accustomed to leading in work, parenting, and daily life, unintentionally dominate the dating dynamic, which can hinder romantic success. She cites examples of women who over‑question, friend‑zone, or try to control where a date goes, and explains how these habits keep them single. The session explores gender expectations around who pays for dates, the financial investment men make, and how women’s attitudes, energy, and perceived attractiveness affect how they are treated by “quality” men versus superficial ones. April shares personal anecdotes—dates at coffee shops, ice‑cream outings, and a recent encounter where a man offered to pay for her bill—to illustrate the benefits of stepping back and receiving. She promotes her VIP Academy, announcing a paid class titled “The Power of Leaning Back: How to Let a Man Lead While Dating” on Monday, President’s Day at 12 pm, priced at $10 per week, and encourages viewers to join the membership site (vip.teachmehowtodate.com) and the ongoing 28‑day Love Yourself challenge. Throughout, she engages with commenters, answers questions, and emphasizes community support, self‑care, and health (e.g., her hysterectomy recovery). The overall message is that women should balance independence with interdependence, stop over‑controlling, and allow men to take the lead to foster healthier, more feminine dating experiences.

Okay. Hey Myra, how you doing? Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Okay, we didn't reach over 100 people. So here's the thing, this upcoming Monday I will be teaching a class called The Power of leaning back, how to date and let a man be a man. And this is why I say that, um, ladies, it's very important. I want to see you. It's very important that you understand that because you've been in control most of your life and in your day-to-day life, whether it's on, on the job or with your kids or whatever, you can also take that over into your dating life and not realize it. Whatever you do the most is what you will give off. So if you are a woman who is always leading, it— you won't even know that you're not letting a man lead. We had a situation, and you know, I heard about a situation about a lady that a man decided to, you know, wanted to take her out. He wanted to go for something light, she wanted something else, and she started questioning him back and forth, and then she dismissed him. And so I'm like, let's talk about this, let's have a dialogue, you know, about this. These are the things that we talk about in our VIP Academy. That's where I will be teaching the class on Monday at 12 noon. It's only $10 a week to join, and even if you join for the week just to, to get in on that class, you gotta join, you gotta invest in yourself because it's very important. If— because you don't know that you're doing the same things until somebody pointed out to you and show you that maybe the reason why I'm single and people don't ask me out is because I don't know how to respond. I don't know how to relinquish control. I don't know how to show levels of my vulnerability. And I'm guilty of that. I've been guilty of that as well. I've also been guilty of friend-zoning folks real quick, and I've been called out on it. They're like, yo, yo, yo, friend-zone game is strong. And so I had to check that out. It wasn't until someone actually pointed it out to me that I was able to identify, yeah, I do friend-zone people, um, quick. But at the same time, you know, y'all was friend-zoning yourself too. So we were, you know, I was able to get a better understanding of their definition of how, you know, they're friend-zoning. And I was able to give them why that I could have possibly put it in the friend zone. So we came to a mutual understanding. Oh, you were waiting on this and I was waiting on that. Okay, now I see what it is. But until someone points it out to you, you will continue to go through the same stuff all of the time. So With that, ladies, are you not leaning back in your position, you know, to receive? Also, are you trying to control every move the man makes? Because, you know, if he doesn't pick the place that you want to go to— see, here's the thing, the fact that he has a desire to take you out— I'm not saying you just go because someone wants to take you out, but if there's a mutual interest and he says, hey, let's go to Starbucks, or let's meet up at, um, you know, Pete's Coffee or whatnot. There's nothing wrong with that. It's when you start the extras— well, I don't want to go there, let's go here— because you're trying to watch it once again, take control, take control, taking control, because you want to go where you want to go versus saying, you know what, I don't even know if I like this man, so I think it might be better for us to actually go do something real light, you know, because men are used to— ladies, you gotta understand this— men spend a lot of money on dating, honey. We spend money too, getting all dolled up and getting our hair done and making sure we're presentable, but they spend a lot of money as well on, um, on dates, and they have in the past. And so I think it's very wise of a man to say, um, yeah, you know what, let's meet here, or let's do the park or something, because I want to get to know you. I want to see if— can I sit over a 4 or 5-course meal with you? You know, even a 3-course meal. Okay, you know, do we have enough to talk about in order to do that? Let's see how it is. I went out on a date Um, well, it wasn't even a date, it was more of a kind of like a meet and greet type thing last week. And, um, we got to talking, the conversation was, as I would say, ooh, kill him. And it got a little late and he— and neither one of us had eaten. And he said, do you want to, um, would you like to go to dinner? I mean, would you want to grab something to eat? Yeah, because we had already built a rapport with each other just in that time that we had conversing. So You gotta understand that it's not all about what you want. It's not all about you taking control. You can't say let a man lead and you won't allow him, even if it's something as simple as instead of him picking a place to take you to a dinner, even it could be Red Lobster. He might not want to do Red Lobster just yet. I want to see, you know, can I have crab legs with her? Can I eat a lobster with her? Can I have a little, you know, a little cheddar bay biscuits with her just yet? You know, he might want to find those things out first. So there's nothing wrong with that. You have to be able to lean back and stop always trying to take control. And you can look at the results in your life to determine how you are. If your results are, you know, you're judging people by where they want to take you to eat and it's just a meet and greet, that says a lot. Because I live like this. And the gentleman I went out with this week, he said, you're interesting. I said, well, I look at it this way, because I wanted to go to IHOP. I said, I'm doing my— I said, this is late, there's nowhere we can find any raw vegan food. I said, I ain't all the way transitions, but I could go for some crepes. He said, you want some crepes? Let's rock out. And he said, you sure you want to go to IHOP? Because of his view of me, I said, yes, I want to go to IHOP. Here's the thing, and I had to explain to him. I'm the type of woman that is grateful for the fact that you even thought about taking me out. Why? Because you're not obligated to spend your hard-earned money that you have gone out and worked all week to make on me. That's, that's— it's— I don't feel— well, I feel like a lot of women feel like, uh, it's the man's job and he's obligated to do that. He's not. If I go work all week and then I meet you when I want to go out with you, you know The woman should be appreciative to that because nobody has to ask you out or take you out. You know, I have people that I know that feel like if a man talks to you at the bar, he should buy you a drink. I don't feel that way. I go to the bar all the time to have dinner, and, um, conversation does not cost. That's just me. I know everybody doesn't feel that way, but that is just me. Uh, Carl said, don't sleep on Golden Corral. Oh, I love me some Golden Corral, Carl. You better stop playing. Um, so you got to be open to actually letting a man lead. You can't say, you know, I want him to lead in this area but then not in this, not in this area. So I'm always appreciative. I don't care if it's, you know what, you know, April, you want some ice cream? And we go to McDonald's and get $2 sundaes. All I'm gonna say is, well honey, can I have extra nuts on my sundae please? Can you ask them for an extra pack of nuts and a cup of water? That's what I'm gonna ask for because My thing is not getting to in your pocket. My thing is let me get to know you first. And there's levels to this. I'm gonna get to know you to see if I want to even have dinner with you, because my time is valuable and not everybody just gets a long extended time. Time, you know, a dinner can last 2 to 3 hours, especially, you know, if the conversation is good and all of that. So I need to know, can I do that with you? You know, can— it's like I need to know you before I go on a road trip, because a road trip normally 4 to 6 hours or more. Can I have a conversation with you? So I will be teaching in the VIP Academy. Make sure you join on Monday at 12 noon, President's Day, The Power of Leaning Back: How to Let a Man Lead While Dating. And I'll be teaching that in the VIP Academy. My ladies that are in there already, y'all know y'all get that good stuff over there. But I'll be teaching it Monday at 12 PM because I think when you're used to being so in control— you're in control of your children, you're a single parent, you're in control on your job— you got this this demeanor of, you know, if it's not what I want, I can fix it. Yeah, you can, but is that really fixing it, or is it, um, you, you taking, uh, the, the control and taking it away from him? Kathy said, I can buy my own food and drinks, give me something I can't buy for myself. And that's fine too, Kathy, but most men— well, most men that I know that ask me out, they wouldn't even think about letting me pay for my own food, even if I'm the one that suggested, you know, hey, what you doing? I want some dessert, let's go out. Even my male friends, I know I know my good friend Tracy. Um, I'll say, Tracy, I got a man question. I need— we need to— I'll call him and I'll say, uh, dessert, it's time for some dessert. And so, and he was like, what's up? I said, I got it, it's time for dessert. We head in the cafe, Cafe Intermezzo's in, um, Buckhead. And so the bill will come and it'll be like $70, $90, and I'll take the bill because I felt like, well, you know, I asked you to go. He's like, girl, we need— I needed some dessert too, and you know I'm about to sit here and let no woman take you and pay no bill. So my, my male friends and the men that I attract don't let me pay for nothing, you know, even if I know they know that I can, or even if I, um, I offer to pay, or if I say— like, I remember, you know, my last relationship, he wouldn't have it, you know, he would not, uh, have none of that. And even on Father's Day, I said, honey, I'm taking you somewhere, and I would take him somewhere on Father's Day, and the next thing I know, he would stop by the ATM. I said, babe, what you doing? He's like, I stopped by the ATM. By the end of the night, I would look in my purse, he would have dropped— my purse would have been open, he would have dropped the money in my purse. Um, you know, he would have, he would have done that. And so that's just the kind of men that I attract. Now fellas, if you want a woman to go 50/50 with you, that's fine too. I just don't attract men that require that. I don't normally attract the old school, old mentality type of guy, the guy that's not looking, looking for you to go half. You know, that guy, the guy that's looking for you to go half and expecting it, I normally don't go out with him. You know, I just— because, um, that tells me a lot about, you know, you're looking for somebody, you know, you want somebody that's, um, a little bit different than how I'm wired. And so because of that, I just don't— not, not that I can't, I just don't attract men that will let me do that. And if you're the type of man that's looking for me to do that, you probably never go out with me again. Um, and so with that, we have to learn how to sit back and let men be men. You know, you have to sit back and let them do what they're supposed to do. Lee said, that's some of the treatment you get for being attractive, because I can guarantee you, if you were an attractive woman, no matter how classy she dressed— okay, but you gotta understand also, Lee, part of it has to do with attraction, part of it has to do with energy and who I am as a woman. How many times have you met an attractive woman that you was like, wow, but yet her spirit, her attitude was off, her energy was off. She may not get the same treatment that I get even though she's attractive like I'm attractive. So with that, attractiveness plays a part, but with quality men who are not just looking at you for what you look like, it takes more than just being attractive. It's not just about the fact that I'm attractive. I can guarantee you, if my— based upon the type of men that I attract, if my attitude was bad, my spirit was off, I had this pedestal-type attitude and this expectation, I promise you, I probably wouldn't get the same treatment. But I'm appreciative because I believe that, you know, a man does not have to take you out. And most— well, quality men, quality men don't just want a beautiful woman on their arm. Quality men. Now, if you just a dude that's get— you know, you get mesmerized by the beauty and the booty, that's a little bit different. But I don't attract men that are just stuck on that. They can appreciate it, but it's now let me see what's got— what's going on with you, you know. Let me, let me see what's— let me see what it is. And I get a lot of women that'll say, hey, Miss April, your advice worked because you're an attractive woman. No, my advice worked because of who I am on the inside. That's why my, my advice work. It's not about being drop dead gorgeous, because Cleopatra wasn't pretty nowhere, but she got Mark Anthony. And she did, um, Julius Caesar— she not did, but she got with Julius Caesar, and she was not an attractive woman at all. Um, so with that, um, it plays a part. Yes, attractiveness plays a part, but I'm not attractive to everybody. So, um, my— for those that I'm— that are attracted to me, it's that at first that attracts them. Then it's like, okay, let me see what she's like, because women that's normally attractive like her would act this way. And when I don't act that way, it becomes a breath of fresh air. So then I get this, the treatment. Am I making sense? And yes, um, it's all— and it's about what you require as well too. So you can't have a requirement of a thing and then your attitude don't match the fact that you want this. So you wonder why the fellas ain't coming through for you like this, and it's because your attitude don't match your requirement. If your attitude doesn't render somebody treating you like this, that plays a part. Don't think because you just cute and got a nice little shape or whatnot that that's gonna be it. No, dudes can get tail anywhere. Like, all of my men— I had a good friend of mine tell me today, he said, April, I didn't have so much— he used the P word— he said, I'm sick of women trying to give me that. They did— they want— they want to give me what they want to give me, but what— but not what I need. And so if that's what you're leading with— I had another friend tell me, April, you need to teach these women to stop leading with their vaginas because that's what they lead with. So with that, um, that plays a big part. That plays a big, big part. So you think because you look this way that it equates to this treatment, uh, Probably from a superficial dude, it does, it does. But a quality man don't just want a pretty face. That's why you can see a man that's, oh, he, oh, kill him, but the woman he's with is very plain Jane. She's not, she's not as cute as you. That's part of the reason why. It wasn't just about her appearance, it was about what was up here and what was in here and her attitude. So it's very important that in the dating in the dating game right now, that you learn to lean back. Even if you're married, learn to lean back. I've had several of my male friends that are married say, April, I have to remind my wife that she not single. She not single, and she be doing stuff like she's single. If you're married, it's time to learn how to lean back. And especially if you married to him, you should know that he gonna come through. That's what it is. Yes, I agree with that. Um, uh, an old school woman needs an old school man. Know your value and appreciate him and his value. Yes, I'm an old school woman, so I have to have a man that has those old school values and was, was taught by an older man. So this new, this new stuff, that don't work for me. I don't, I don't work, uh, that don't work for me. I'm not trying to be equal to you. I'm not trying to show you and prove that I can do what you can do. I'm not trying to be in competition with you. You go out there and work hard if you want to and break your back. Mama gonna be there and mend you back together because my back is not gonna be broke because I'm not out here trying to show you that I can do it too. No, I know I can do it, baby. I just don't want to. I just don't want to. So with that, make sure you join the VIP Academy. As of Monday, I will be doing a teaching on the power of leaning back. And it's so important, so important, so important, because you're doing too much. You're doing way too much, way too much of this. If the man just want to go out and say, hey, let's go grab an ice cream cone at, uh, at, uh, which is my favorite little place is 31 Flavors. Go get, go get one, you know, over there. You know, if he say, let's go grab an ice cream sundae, and I'm like, oh, I can have ice cream sundae? Yeah, okay, so I would like the brownie sundae with a scoop of butter pecan and some some extra nuts, and that's it. A little whipped cream on top. Now let's sit down here at this ice cream parlor and have a conversation. That's really all it is. I don't know if you've seen the post that I posted this morning. I got up this morning, I made juice. I make my own fresh juice every couple of days. So I made some juice today, and I wrote on it, on the picture, something like, would you like to join me at the park today for some great conversation? And some fresh juice. And I hashtagged it #DatingShouldBeSimple. And it was something as simple as that. If I wanted to go out on a date with someone today, and it's such a nice day here in Atlanta, it feels like an LA day, I would just— I would have texted that. You want to have some fresh juice with Mama at the park today? It would have been that simple. And that's my way of saying I want to see you. Doesn't cost you anything. Let's meet up at the park. And 9 times out of 10, if you, if you know, depending on who I would have called— well, I wouldn't have called anybody that I could not have had a great time with— it would— we would have sat there on a little blanket talking all at the park. And then he probably would have said, you know what, you hungry? Let's go grab something to eat. It's, it's really that, you know, that simple, because we would have talked ourselves into lunch. But just a simple gesture of that changes the dynamics. But if you don't know how to lean back and you always— I got— I can't— I can't— you always jumping to do stuff because you're used to it. It's just because you're used to something doesn't mean you have to always, um, do. When— if you have not been in a relationship or new to dating from a quality, um, and a purpose standpoint and a wise feminine woman standpoint You're going to have to program yourself to learn how to do— how to learn lean back. And I'm going to show you exactly how, um, to lean back. And I'm— and I know you could probably gonna be like, oh, she all in my business. And I'm gonna be all in your business on Monday at 12 noon, but I'm gonna show you key things that you can do to learn how to lean back. And it's going to make you uncomfortable because you're not accustomed to doing these things, but it's okay. But you— because you can't say I want a man in one way and then on this end you don't let him lead. What is it gonna be? That's like women who say, I'm into strong and independent, but when a man doesn't open your door getting in the car, you trip out. Or he doesn't open your door going into the store, you trip out. Well, why does he need to do that? You strong and independent and you don't need no man, so what the hell? Like, open your own door, you know? Open your own door. So you gotta, you gotta learn to balance it all out, you know? There's nothing wrong with being, um, interdependent There's nothing wrong with being self-sufficient, being about your coins and all that. There's nothing wrong with that. Nobody wants a woman that, that doesn't have anything going on, um, you know, with her. But at the same time, nobody also wants a woman that's always doing and won't, you know, get into it before, you know, I get to. I remember my last relationship, um, I would get real upset of how he functioned, right? And we talked not too long ago because we're still friends. And I told him, I said, you know, honey, you and I would still be together today if I would have known that it takes you 6 months to the date to make a decision on things that I could have made a decision on. I would have made a decision on really quick, and I would have moved and made it happen. I said, if I would have not learned that, you know what, April, if it's something very important that you need done ask him way before you want it done, so by the time you need it done, he would have been ready to do it. Don't ask him to do anything immediately that's very important, because what it'll do is it'll throw you out of the receiving position, meaning receiving his help to do it, and it throws you in that masculine position to where you're doing it. We just didn't learn that about each other. And he said, well, April, I wish I would have known that it took me 6 months to do it, because everything you told me 6 months prior, I would do it like clockwork. In 6 months. We just didn't understand it at the time. But I would take things, take matters, um, in, into my, um, my own hands, and I'm just gonna fix it because I ain't got time to be fooling around with you, okay? I ain't got time for that today. But I didn't know how to lean back. And the more I lean back, the more assistance I would get from men, the more feminine I felt, the more of a woman I felt when I leaned back. And when you're in the presence of a grown man, a a grown, mature man, he's going to fix the problem. You never have to ask if he's going to do anything because as a wise woman, you would have chosen him from a wise perspective. You wouldn't have just chose him. So you don't know— you never have to ask, is he's going to do X, Y, and Z for me? Because you would have chose him. If he's not doing it, think about this: was he not doing it before I chose him? Because you know, you gotta— you got a time period that you're getting to know someone before you choose them. You know, so when you do choose them, did you choose them based upon the preliminaries? You know, the prerequisites? Did you have so many prerequisites? Did you, you know, did you weigh it? But once you make him your man and he's not doing certain things, you had ample enough time in the beginning stages to figure out what kind of man he is. But if you don't know who you are, you don't know what you need, and you start figuring out what you need after you've chosen him. So make sure you join me on Monday. I know I see my VIPers, they didn't know that I was doing this for them, but, uh, yes, I'm doing this. Make sure you join, go to vip.teachmehowtodate.com and join. You know, we have a bunch of ladies in there, it gets real raw, um, in there. And yes, Mama April does come in there and I will let you have it in a— not in a rude way, but I'm— I will check you. Check you on your behavior. I will check you on what you think a man should be doing, and what— especially when it's from a superficial place. Ruth said, yes, April, love you, VIP rocks. And so thank you so much, Ruth, for being a part of that. Um, you keep us well informed. And I read— I may not respond to everything, and a lot of times that I don't respond, I'm waiting to see if you guys are going to apply what you've been taught, because in the group it's very supportive. Everyone helps each other. And sometimes as like the mama bird, we'll sit back and we'll say, let me see what the baby's done learned this time, you know. And let me see, I saw what she wrote about her date. Let me see if the other ladies in here are going to respond. Ruth said, oh yes, she does. She doesn't hold back on us. No, I don't. Lori says she calls us on our stuff. And that's because I don't want you to make the mistakes, continue to make the same mistakes that I used to make. I had no clue what leaning back was. It was like, well, heck, if he can't get it done, I'll just get it done. Well, I want to go to the Oceanaire. That's my favorite restaurant. Why we got to go over— no, no, no, I don't even want to go to the Oceanaire with anybody that I'm not feeling, because the Oceanaire, the, um, it's a 5-star, and the, the ambiance, the lights is real low, and you got to be, you know, I got to be— it's real intimate in there, you know, it's real intimate. And so I don't want to just be intimate in that intimate setting with someone that I'm not feeling. So yeah, we need to go ahead, hit up Starbucks, you know. We might need to go play a kickball game or something. We might need to, you know, meet each other at, you know, the ice cream parlor, or take a, take a walk through Atlanta Station or whatnot, um, in order to, to, you know, to, to see if I want to go to, uh, you know, uh, a Morton's or Ruth's Chris or Oceanaire or anywhere else that I want to go with you, you know. Um, the website is vip— V as in Victor, I as in ice cream, P as in Paul— dot teachmehowtodate.com. I'll make sure that I post the link after this is done. I would put the link above, but I noticed that when I go live and I put the link above, um, it doesn't really reach you. So I have to put the link afterwards, um, after I'm done. So I'm going to be really discussing this, and I'm going to give you tools and strategies to Check yourself when you're out of order and you're not letting a man lead. Quit with all of the questions. Well, why this or why that? Sometimes you don't need all of the questions all of the time. Just go with it. If it's let's meet at Pete's Coffee or Starbucks just for a meet and greet, let's go for it. You never know, he might get hungry just like you hungry because you're just a great conversationalist and want to grab something to eat afterwards. You never know. But you cannot be in a position where you are always questioning and taking control. Miss Grant said, join the group, it's great, you won't be sorry. Thank you so much, Miss Grant. And so this month it's all about loving yourself, so we, we're on the Love Yourself 28-Day Challenge. So you can still join, stay in the group, and catch up on all of the stuff, watch all of the replays of our masterclass trainings and everything. But Spencer says the group will bless your life. Thank you so much. Um, so There's a lot of videos that are in there. You can post your questions. We talk about everything from sex to, uh, you know, anything else, to anything else. Nothing is off limits. What's in the group, you know, we never discuss names, or I may, I may bring out situations, but I never, um, discuss or divulge names or anything like that. But when I bring out a situation like, you know, on a live, it's because I want the masses to hear, um, what sometimes the things that we can we do, that we do. Let's see, uh, some— Orlando says some of you still trying to prove a point. Stop saying what you can do for yourself. Hell, we know that. Stop trying to vindicate yourself. That's a masculine mindset. Absolutely. And he said it's unattractive. Yes, you guys said I should do an ice cream social. Y'all want me to do ice cream social? Now fellas, if I do an ice cream social, will y'all show up? I know that the ladies will show up. That's one of the, that's one of the, the things that we found when I did the show collecting data. The men would never really show up for the women, but the women, men would, the women would always show up for the men. So if I decide to do, I, maybe a spring ice cream social, fellas, will you show up? Because I have a probably a couple ice cream parlors that I can partner with on it. I'm just saying. But you got to be, you know, I would be willing to do it, but you got to show up. You got to show up. You got to show up. So it would just be strictly to It will be in Atlanta. I live in Atlanta, so of course it will be, um, um, in Atlanta. No, Leo, not in that area. So I don't know, you know, y'all let me know, but the fellas got to show up, you know. It's just all about coming to have a conversation, you know, over ice cream. That's it, that's all. So love you guys. I gotta get out of here. I'm headed to, uh, one of my, um, a new herb store that I heard, um, that I heard about. And because you guys, I told you guys I was really, um, bloated yesterday because of my hysterectomy. And I'm like, where did all of this come from? So I'm going to go get some herbs. I did— well, I thank you guys, ladies, so much, um, for giving me some tips. I did last night and I did today drink some apple cider vinegar mixed with a little water. So now I'm going to go to the herb store to see if the African herbalist can give me some stuff for that as well. So I'm all about— I'm on my health kick, y'all. Um, I'm on my health kick because I want to be around for my grandbabies. And you know, when I do get married, I want to be an asset and not a liability. And that means an asset in my health as well too. So I love you guys. I will post the link, um, so you guys can join the VIP Academy. And, um, tune in with me on Monday at 12 noon, President's Day. Love y'all. Bye.
