Why I Had To Walk Away From Everything | Life Update

In this candid, hour‑long update, April Mason reflects on two decades of public life, explaining why she stepped back from YouTube and many of her businesses and how she is now navigating midlife. She begins by thanking long‑time followers and recounting her early YouTube career (2008‑2026), her rise as a dating coach, creator of the "Femininity" and "Dating Academy" programs, and her TEDx talk on identity switching, which underpins her core message that a life‑changing "identity switch" leads to love, health, wealth, and personal freedom. She then details a cascade of personal challenges: perimenopause starting at 37, a hysterectomy at 40, a lupus diagnosis in 2019, and the 2020 suicide of her adopted son, followed by years of caregiving for his bipolar‑schizophrenia diagnosis until she became “free” in July 2026. These health and family crises coincided with the closure of several ventures – the Dating Academy (2022), the All Things Feminine Social Club (after five years), and a restaurant – as she recognized a broader cultural decline in women’s relational skills. April shares her financial milestone of buying a Midwest home outright at age 47, a goal she set to secure an asset and independence, and how this move supports her new “dark feminine” phase, embodied by the persona “Madam Mason,” which focuses on sensuality, role‑play, and creative expression. She introduces “Empty Nesters Meet,” a community and upcoming adults‑only cruise for midlife singles, and mentions other creative projects, vault‑style archival videos, and a free audio guide titled “6 Signs You’re Ready for a Midlife Switch.” Throughout, she urges women to combine heart and brain, pursue financial security, and embrace visibility rather than invisibility in midlife. The video ends with an invitation to follow her on Instagram for spontaneous, authentic content rather than a regular influencer schedule.

Hello, hello, hello, my loves. I know it's been a while since I have come to have a conversation with you, give you an update. I know I left YouTube a while ago, and we have been recently posting some of my vault content, but I said let me give a life update. There's some things that have gone on since the last time we talked. I think I did talk to you all When I— right after I turned 50. Well, I'm 51 now, and more things have changed in a good way, in a good way. But let me first say thank you so much for those of you who continue to watch my videos over and over again, all the way back from my very first YouTube video in 2008. I've been on YouTube since 2008. In 2 years, it'll be what, 20 years? That's a long time. But thank you so much. And for those of you that have found me through other means like podcast interviews or radio interviews or television interviews, thank you so much for joining us. I know you probably came to this channel after you heard something sizzling that I said, looking for more information. Well, for me, I took a hiatus. For those of you that follow me on Instagram, you already know Because I'm more on Instagram more often than anywhere else. But I'm doing better. I'm gonna do better. I promise you I'm gonna do better. But I wanted to give you information on where I've been, what I've been doing, what I have not been doing, what I stopped doing, what I closed, what I opened. But I just wanted to share this with you. Now I got my notes because y'all know I'm 51 now and going through that perimenopause, but my brain be braining, so I have to write things down now. Okay, so let's start from the beginning. Like I said, some of you have been with me since my first YouTube video in 2008, and some of you have been with me before then in my Black Planet days, Black Voices days, Black People Connect tag days. I'm telling my age, age, and how long I've been at this. But yeah, some of you have been with me since I was Miss California with a K, and once again, I'd like to thank you for your years of support. Well, you've watched me evolve, you've watched me change, you've watched me start businesses, you've watched me close businesses, you've watched me share with you the parts of my life that I wanted to share. Because truth be told, y'all only was getting like 1% of my life. And it was always funny to me how people would try to figure me out. They would come up with these elaborate concocted stories and rumors. Or we still get people that use my name for clout, especially the girls that don't show their face. But they do these commentaries, but they never show their face, child. Like I said, clout chasing, clout chasing. Because Miss Mason's name still got weight to it. But I kept my private life very private intentionally. Y'all didn't even know when I was married because I didn't show nobody. Bloop. I'm that private. But during that time, I was very successful. You know my work from the femininity, my dating academy, which has helped thousands of women connect and find their person. When I was doing matchmaking, I started my matchmaking service. I was matchmaking prior, but I actually officially started the service in 2012. We had a 90% success rate. The women that have gone through my dating academies and took my courses, those that did the work got the result, period. Once again, those that did the work got the results. And you can always go to Instagram to check out the many testimonials, whether they were in their 20s or whether in their 60s. The women that do the work get the results. The women that complain about what Wasn't available or did not change their mindset. They didn't get the result, no matter how many of my courses or my books that they read. They just didn't get the results. But as I've always shared, change is always available. What you want is waiting for you, and it's on the other side of your identity switch. Which brings me to some of you found me through my TED Talk. My did a TEDx talk on identity switching. Y'all, y'all don't even understand. I got asked to do that at the last minute, and I was so not prepared. But I told my publicist, "What am I going to do?" Because I was on a girls trip with my. Teach Me How to Date community, and we were in Sarasota on a girls trip, and I got asked to do it. I had to leave a little bit early so that I could go do the TED Talk, but I want to do it again. I want to do it again. I know what I want to say now versus getting called last minute, having to go. But for some of you have read the book, it is a book that actually went viral and continues to go viral. Now everybody talking about identity switching, identity switching, ever since that book came out in 2021. But I don't care about that because as long as women are making the switch, that's what matters. Where it originated from doesn't matter, but as long as you ain't stealing my stuff— because a lot of y'all be stealing my stuff, and word for word, child, I'm gonna like— they just be stealing. And my best friends, they will text and be like, hey, this girl said exactly what you said. I'm not even— I wasn't even worried about it at the time as long as the information was getting out there that The life that you want is on the other side of your identity switch, whether it's love, whether it's health, whether it's wealth, whether it's a different lifestyle. Everything starts with you. I will never take down from that, which actually, when you look at my work, my work was mainly talking about transformation. Everything happens during and after the transformation, after you choose to transform. And I believe a lot of people didn't understand that I use dating, love, femininity, becoming a feminine CEO, becoming a recession-proof woman. I just use that to bait you in. But my overall message has always been that the, the life that you want is on the other side of your identity switch, which starts with your thinking and how you show up. I don't care about— Miss April, but you don't know these men. Yes, I do. They had been dating since I was 15. I got married in my 20s. I got divorced. I'm dating, all of the things. I— there's nothing that you can tell me about these men that I don't know. I probably know men better than you do because I've been studying the male brain since I was in the 10th grade. And the difference between probably me and that are watching is I've accepted men for what they are. And I understand that you're only supposed to choose a man that's a benefit to you. Y'all don't be choosing benefits. They choose us based on benefits and the benefit we are to them, whether it's peace, respect, how they feel when they with us, whether we good taking care of kids, or if you a builder kind of woman, or whatever your thing is. Men will always choose a woman that's a benefit to them. The problem that I found, which caused me to close my dating academy and close a lot of the business that I had, is that The state of women and how women showed up in the world, it's declined. Women have become academically successful. But when it came to relationships, emotional intelligence, how to engage with men, women are— not was, but are— at an all-time low. So I closed my dating academy in 2022. I went viral for that. And then my daughter and son-in-law, they were like, Ma, let's try it again. I let them take over at the end of 2023. They ran it. They got to see some of the things that I saw. My daughter, you guys, if you guys don't follow her, go follow her, Adriana Onabogu. She is doing her thing and I'm extremely proud of what she's doing, but she gets to see what I saw and what I have been dealing with for almost 2 decades. And so for me, having to deal with women in a way that— put it like this, I understand why Kevin Samuels was so successful, and this is the things that I would try to get to women. Women did not understand that you can scroll past what this man is saying if it doesn't apply to you. But women were seeking validation from the very man that they said were giving them trauma. I couldn't even fault him for what he was doing because he learned how to tap into women's triggers, women's insecurities, to the point he had women calling in asking him to rape them. This is the state of women today as well too, whether he's here, whether he's gone. He tapped into a understanding of the psychology of how women that are— have not mastered themselves work. So imagine me having to go harder in the paint, and I can't talk to you like this. I had to go harder. See, when I would say stuff like, see, this is the shit that I'm talking about, it was, oh my God, Miss April, you're so real. But I don't talk like that on a regular basis. So as I started to see things really change, it started to really affect my nervous system. I'm helping women, but women have gotten to the point where you could put them in a position to win, but they're so used to losing, they don't realize what's going on. They're so caught up in their trauma. And that's a lot energetically when you're dealing with thousands of people all the time. That's a lot. So I said, you know what? That's not what I'm going to do. I'm going to be in my All Things Feminine Social Club. It was very peaceful in there. We've had thousands of women join. Some leave. Some come back. Some say, well, you know, I thought I could do it by myself. I thought I was ready, but I wasn't. It didn't matter. We were peaceful over there. I decided to close after 5 years my All Things Feminine Social Club because I start to realize what I'm starting to become. That chapter and those eras served their purpose. My goal was to help millions of women change their lives, those that wanted to change. Some, you still sitting on the information. You ain't quite ready yet, but the information is there. So for me, I I had to do what was best for me. Now, I didn't know, y'all, that I had been going through perimenopause since I was 37. 51 now, so imagine all that time. Then at 40, I ended up having a hysterectomy. Then at 43, I became an empty nester. But while I became an empty nester, I'm also going through perimenopause, not knowing it. Then I was diagnosed with lupus in 2019. So all of this stuff is going on. We had a catastrophic situation that happened in my family. My adopted son committed suicide in 2020. After that, it threw my family upside down. Many of you didn't know. The people on Instagram, I talked about it briefly, and I recently talked about it a little bit more. But I became a full-time caretaker to an adult after that happened. It wasn't until a couple of months ago, over the summer of 2026, July 8th, to be exact, that I became a free woman. I wasn't responsible for anybody anymore. I didn't have to have the cameras up all the time. Did you take your medicine? What are you doing? Where are you at? Going through all of these different up and down emotions. And the diagnosis was bipolar schizophrenia. So for those of you that know, you know that's a hard thing. to deal with, especially when you don't have a history of mental health issues. You don't know what to do. Every day is different. Finding the proper medications. So I did all of that, all while smiling in front of the camera and going live and teaching and doing all of the things that I needed to do to not just sustain myself, but that's the only thing I knew how to do at the time. So As of today, I have been enjoying this summer. Now we're in fall now, but over the summer, once I became free, I just had to take it in. I was like, okay, my house is empty. It's— I'm enjoying myself. I can date properly because although I teach you and have taught you dating relationships, the mind of a man and how to show up, I could only do that from a surface level, meaning when you're dealing with someone that requires so much emotional bandwidth from you, you could only do the fun parts of dating, which I was okay with because that's a lot to put on someone dealing with what I was— have been dealing with for the last 6 and a half years. And so I enjoyed it. I'm having a good time going on dates, but child, the moment somebody popping questions or whatnot, I'm like, honey, I don't have that type of Mental bandwidth because I understand what's required in a relationship. Now, although I dated from that perspective, I was never dealing with the lack of options. Mason has always had options. It's just when you are mature enough to know that I have to deal with this situation and figure this out before I can even give myself to anybody. Now, we can go to the movies. We can go on a trip. We can go to dinner and all that. But when you start talking about future, child, I'm like, wait a minute. So I'm sure that many of you who have children, ailing parents— because we're at that stage. If you're a middle-aged person, we're at that age where we're dealing with either adult children, or we're dealing with grandchildren, or we are dealing with ailing parents. So it could be difficult to try to build something meaningful with someone when you have all of this other stuff that requires you, not just emotionally but physically as well too. So all you're looking for is some fun, pleasure, excitement. That's it. It's like, let's go to the fair, let's go to Six Flags, let's go to Hawaii, let's go. But when they get close, child, because when you teach the stuff that I teach, they be wanting to get close real fast and be like, oh, wait, wait, hold up, not yet. So I'm sure some of you have experienced Not having the bandwidth to be what you needed to be to someone else. So that was that. But I'm outside now, I'm gonna have a good time. If y'all not in your midlife and y'all not having a good time allowing these men to dote all over you and adore you and serve you, you missing out. Now another thing that happened is growing up for me, one of my goals was to always make sure I had a home. I was always aware that the more that you helped others reach their goal, the more you would put yourself in a position to receive. So I helped, like I said at the beginning, thousands of women meet their man. That's what women want. I don't care what women tell me. Women want a good man regardless of what they say and all of this. We gonna decenter men. We gonna leave men alone. These men, y'all can't even stop talking about them. So there's nothing that a woman can tell me about not wanting a man. If she can't stop talking about him, okay? Because at the end of the day, if you don't— if you don't smoke crack or you don't want crack, you don't— you're not going to talk about it, okay? Because men is y'all crack, and there's nothing wrong with that. I just say follow your heart, but take your brain with you and know what type of lifestyle and the benefits that you want out of this here relationship. But that's another conversation. So for me, what happened was growing up, we moved around a lot, and I didn't get the opportunity to make a lot of friends. We move from place to place. So my goal was to always be able to buy a house cash. That was my goal, and I accomplished that goal at the age of 47. And this is my home. I moved to the Midwest. I left Atlanta 3 and a half years ago, moved to the Midwest. And I might have to do a video on this because I posted something on Instagram and Facebook asking women if they could make a transformation, 90 days in life, what area would that be? And it was overwhelmingly finances. I didn't know that so many women are struggling or having financial issues. Yes, I did the Feminine CEO, I taught the Recession-Proof Woman, but that might be something that I need to dive into a little bit more because I was able to pay cash for this home in the Midwest off of digital products. I would do an event maybe once a year, once a couple of years, so it wasn't even off of the events, it was off of digital products. So I don't need the girls be running around here hungry and broken paycheck to paycheck and stressing themselves out. So I may do a video on how to elevate your finances in midlife so that you don't have to worry about dying alone or moving in with your kids, because I, I've seen a lot of that from women, and I didn't know that this was a thing. But just put a pin in that, don't hold me to it, but if I have the strength to do that I will. But that was one of the main reasons why I helped so many people, so that I could in turn buy a home cash. Now, some of you may need to move. Now, that's another conversation. Some of you trying to do so much, but you don't want to move. Yes, I moved to a little small town in the Midwest. Do I like it here? Uh, when I first got here, hey, it was okay, but there's nothing to do and ain't no men out here, child. So I have to go to where those things that I like to do are, which is not a problem, but Sometimes you would like to have those amenities in your area. For me, it was very important that I had an asset, and from— this is my asset. This is my home. No, it's not a huge mansion. It's about 2,500 square feet, 4 floors, and it's mine. And I want that for each and every one of you, even if it means you have to relocate somewhere else. So like I said, I may do a video on that. Because I don't want the girls out here struggling. You can't want a man to give you a soft life if you can't give it to yourself. And what this did for me, it put me in a position to breathe. My nervous system was messed up growing up because we didn't have much, moved around. I lived in a shelter as an adult and in my car with my kids. It was very important to me to be able to take care of myself. And that's what this home in the Midwest was able to do for me. Now moving on, let me see what else I have on my paper. I turned 50 last year. I don't know if you guys saw, I did a video about the things that I had to do and making new friends and seeing who was my friend, who wasn't. All of that started to happen. Well, at 51, it became, what do I want now? Because I reached my goal. Nobody really talks about what happens when you actually reach your goal. My goal was to pay cash for a home, and I did that at 47. Now what? Those of you that follow me on Instagram, you know I went and did what I call a sensual summer sabbatical, and I enjoyed the summer, and I went to different places, and I started observing and started to look at the world, see what we were dealing with, and it was just a lot of observation. I got to see what stage of life that I'm in? What is it that I want? What don't I want? And I start making adjustments. And for me, I am heavy in my dark feminine era right now. I think this will probably be the era that I stay in until I'm gone on because I like it here. It's so delicious here. It's so freeing here. I left good girl go a long time ago. And some people that follow me on Instagram, they've seen Madam Mason. I love her. She's written several ebooks already. On how to deliciously reawaken your sensuality. Talk him through it. Text him through it. Let's play. The feminine guide to role-playing. All of those things are deliciously Madam Mason, which is a part of who I am now that I'm not in the caretaker mode. And I'm also the eldest daughter. If you know anything about the eldest daughter, you know about the eldest daughter syndrome. Yes, we Take on the responsibility, and we bring order. I've backed away from that. My kids are now 32, 30, and 28. I let them live their life. Whatever they don't want to do, don't do it. Just don't come asking me for nothing. If you're not willing to follow what's been set out for you, do you. What they say? F them kids. That's where I'm at right now. It's all about me. And I'm having a wonderful dating life, meeting new people. I have more ideas. Interesting enough, I have more creative time, so I can decide if I want to start another business. Oh, I did close my restaurant. It was so much going on, I closed my restaurant. One day I may open it again, or maybe it was just something that I tried. What I love is that I'm at a place where I'm okay with changing my mind. I might want something today that I don't want tomorrow, and that's okay. I'm supposed to evolve. You're supposed to evolve. If you are staying the same consistently, something's wrong. Now, your core of who you are, your morals or your values, should stay the same, but you may change what you believe. You might change the way you want to show. You might want to get up and cut your hair off tomorrow. You might want to Do something that you've never done before, and people's like, "Oh my God, that's not like her." Is it not? Do you really know her? That's the stage of life that I'm in now. I can change my mind, and so can you. One thing my creativity led me to is something that I started almost ten years ago when I became an empty nester. I created a company and set it to the side called Empty Nesters Meet, and now I am bringing that vision to life because Empty Nesters Meet. It's all about people that are in that midlife stage that are empty nesters, or you are in the stage of life you're 45 plus, 40 plus, and you don't have any children. You are considered an empty nester. Now, there's been people that say, well, what about me? I'm in that stage of life, but I do have a little kid. You know, I have a school-aged child. This not for you, unfortunately, because what I didn't want is for empty nesters to go on this cruise because they were going on a cruise to the Bahamas. Did I say that? We're going on a cruise to the Bahamas April 22nd through the 26th on Virgin Voyages Cruise Lines. Adults only, no children. And as I was saying, it would be unfair for those that come on the cruise as empty nesters looking to connect with other empty nesters. They connect with someone that's like, okay, yeah, this is cool, you know, I met a girlfriend, I met a new friend. Oh, and it's co-ed, the fellas are welcome too. And then they find out you got a 5-year-old and you can't move the way they move. This is specifically for those who are in that phase of life where they're 40 plus, they're an empty nester, the kids are gone. Or even if the kids aren't gone, say you have adult children that live at home but you're not responsible for them, that's fine too. Or you're at that age but you never had kids, that's fine too. Or you're an empty nester By the definition, your kids are grown and they're gone. So I'm excited about this. We planned this cruise. There'll be more information about it, but you'll definitely be able to find information about it, a link to it in the description. And we're going to go have a good time. It's co-ed, so the fellas are welcome. Who knows, you might meet the love of your life. Couples are welcome as well too. So I'm excited about this. I have other projects that I'm working on that are more creative. They're not really teaching. They are more on my creative side. And they're very— some of them are kind of sexy too. And it's all about sensuality, all of the 5 senses, because sensuality is nothing more than embracing the 5 senses. So I wanted to just drop in here and share with you all what's been going on. Make sure that you follow me on Facebook and Instagram, especially Instagram because I'm there more often. And also let me say this, because y'all know y'all start I'm not saying I'm bringing videos about midlife on a regular basis. This channel has become more of my vault channel, and if I have something to share in regards to midlife, or a lot of you want to know what I did to lose the weight because perimenopause had your girl in a chokehold and it was like, this is not it. My doctor, I have a functional medicine doctor out there in Atlanta. What else? How to position yourself so if you want to buy a house cash, you can do so if that's what you choose to do, or at least generate more income to be able to sustain yourself. What else do you guys ask me about? Beauty stuff. What's my night routine? What's my morning routine? I really don't do those too often, but if I feel the energy to do so, I will. Because for me, it's not about being required to create content. I only want to create content when I am inspired to create content. I don't want to become an influencer on midlife or anything like that, but on Instagram, you will see me live out what this midlife actually looks like. My date night outfits, all of that. Yeah, I will have those things on my Instagram. But I'm in the stage of life where I just want to live. I don't want to have to take a camera with me everywhere. I want to enjoy moments. My daughter get on me about that all the time. She's like, Ma, you didn't film anything. I'm like, girl, I forgot, because I'm just enjoying the moment. So I'm not saying I'm coming on a regular basis, but I did want to drop this update. And you will see more of my vault videos. My— I got videos. We went through videos, child. Listen, I have 2 terabytes worth of content that I have had for over 20 years now that I have been recording. So the quality on some of it is not the best, but well, as far as the sound, and it might be a little fuzzy, just a little bit, but it's still good information. I'll create a playlist so So you'll know where to watch certain videos, whether it's feminine CEO content, femininity content, love, whatever. That'll be there. So that's, I believe— let me wait, hold on, let me look at my list. I think that's all I have to share. Oh wait, I wanted to tell you, if you find yourself in a place in life where you know you want something different now, like now is the time for you where you've outgrown everything else, you're a woman in midlife and your life just doesn't feel the same because you're trying to bring an old version of who you used to be into this new phase of life. I created a free audio entitled 6 Signs You're Ready for a Midlife Switch. Look at the link below and put your email in and you'll get that free audio. And it gives you 6 signs that you're ready. Many of you that are watching, you are ready for a midlife switch, but you don't know how to get there, you— whether it's love, whether it's finances, whether it's being free, whether it's doing nothing. You don't even know how to get to the point where you actually doing nothing. Look down in the description and make sure you go get that audio, because right now it's the juiciest, most delicious, most tantalizing and amazing time of a woman's life. When I tell you I see people online having these conversations and they sound bitter and angry, or, oh, I don't want to be nobody's nurse, Or, or I don't want these men and they and these kids and they sound like it was like girl that is not my life. So there is a beautiful life when it comes to aging. But say bro they say you hit the wall. What wall? Do I look like I hit somebody wall? What wall, buddy? You only hit a wall and become invisible if you choose to. And then my question is always. Invisible to who? If you're someone that feels invisible in this world as a midlife woman, invisible to who? That's all I have. Have a wonderful day, and maybe, just maybe, I'll do another video soon. Bye.
