Chris Miquel argues the primary, often-overlooked problem for email marketers is poor data quality — sending to unvalidated or stale addresses (including spam traps and bots) which depress engagement and damage deliverability. He warns that many newsletter publishers blast whole lists without validation, causing low open rates (e.g., ~15%) and eventual delivery failures that can destroy emerging businesses.

Biggest issue today for emailers that they don't know about is the data itself. So they're sending to data that hasn't engaged. It's been put in spam traps, basically, right? They're, they're not validating the data. So they could be sending spam traps or, you know, bots or things that, you know, could affect things. So by not having a good automation process for your, for your data, you know, that's the biggest issue that people have. And then, you know, they're like, oh my God, I'm making my money. And then all of a sudden they go to zero because they can't deliver. And, you know, they find out too late when they actually have some sort of business and it kills them.
