Chris Miquel shows how a bloated subscriber list tanks your email deliverability. Most publishers grow fast without cleaning house, then watch open rates crater around 50,000 subscribers. The fix: send only to people who opened or clicked recently, and cut the inactive ones loose.

The data itself is what's going to hurt your deliverability. The biggest issue that most people, media operators in general, especially the people just coming up and they're just building stuff and, you know, they're getting good success. In the beginning they don't understand deliverability. So in the end it becomes the data itself is what's going to hurt your deliverability. What I mean by that is that they're not properly segmenting their data, they're not sunsetting people, they're just constantly saying through the whole list. But once you get to a certain point, and it could be 50,000, your metric is going to keep on declining. Just because you haven't been cleaning your list off of people that have not engaged. Now it's time to push on even more Data acquisition. They doubled down on getting more subscribers and now you're, you're flooding in with new people and unfortunately at that point probably your reputation is a little, you know, on the fritz. So what they need to do is you have to have your, I call it a base sending segment. And that's basically who's clicking X amount of days, who's open X amount of days, and who's been newly subscribed in X amount of days. If you send someone sending, sending twice a day, in 10 days you've sent them 20 emails and they haven't opened and they're falling off good, there's no reason to keep on sending to them.
