Daniel Obi walks through a weekly routine for building muscle while staying athletic. He covers CNS priming with light fast reps, heavy lifts like power cleans and split squats, conditioning work with sprints and sled pushes, and daily core training. He emphasizes mobility, proper technique, and nutrition timing to add size without losing speed.
What's good, y'all?
Got another video.
I will start doing this every week now. Apparently y'all love the last video and y'all love to see this, you feel me? So I appreciate the love. And yeah, man, today's video is pretty much how you can still be very overall athletic and still build muscle. You know, people always wonder, if you train like an athlete, how are you able to build muscle? You know what I'm saying? And you know, this is really me just breaking it down with the little things I'm doing. I'm just, you know, stretching and just, you know, just testing out my body real quick before I work out or lift weights. I did work out with one of my clients today too as well. You're going to see, I am going to, uh, just elaborate some of the things we did. I'm not gonna post all of it, you know, You know what I'm saying? Because, you know, that's his personal program.
As I said, yeah, that's his personal program, so I'm not going to post a lot of the things we did. But yeah, but I typically start them off with doing leg isometric, uh, single leg isometric holds just to, you know, push some blood and pump some blood into the— what's it called— the knees right there before we start doing any athletic movements or really just moving in general. But yeah, you know, today we did that, and obviously, you know, I already filmed that, so I just had him do leg extensions real quick after that. We moved into what's called shocking, what's called the CNS, you know what I'm saying? We're priming the CNS. If you notice, we're doing lightweight, 135, and we're moving that bar pretty quick, you know, not too crazy quick, but this is just to prime your CNS, shock your central nervous system right here. So we just do, you know, uh, quick RDLs, you know what I'm saying, the eccentric motions and all that. So yeah, you know, we do a lot of that too, you know what I'm saying? And it's also good because you're stretching out, you know, your hamstrings, which is super important because in our next phase, we're going to start sprinting. You know, the way I write my programs, I do it in phases. You know what I'm saying? We're typically able to do everything, and I mean everything in a sense how he can build muscle. And guess what? He can build muscle and get overall very, very athletic and overall functional, you know what I'm saying? A lot of the moves I have him do, I have him doing bear crawl sometimes too as well. And I know people are asking, why would you do that? Well, you know what I'm saying, in life you just don't move in a straight pattern, you know what I'm saying? You want to be able to move in unpredictable positions and just overall very functional. Uh, right here we have a couple, you know what I'm saying, they were playing around. But yeah, I digress. It is February anyways, you know what I'm saying? The month of love. Excuse me, as they said. So yeah, with this, we did about 3 sets of like 20 to 22. Like I said, we're just priming the CNS. We're shocking our central nervous system. We're waking it up. A bunch of men after the age of 30, they're cooked, literally. And I mean, when I mean cooked, I'm talking about, you know, they really haven't, they haven't done any fast-twitch muscle fiber exercises that, you know, that just sparks up your CNS. So they feel stiff, they feel sluggish, they feel all these things because guess what? Their central nervous system is pretty much, it's asleep. Yeah, that's, uh, that's bad, man. It's just asleep, you know what I'm saying? And you do not want to be that man, you know what I'm saying? Because, you know, at the rightful age of 30, 30 all the way to like 40 or 50, you still want to be athletic. Obviously you will never be athletic as you were once, as you were younger, but you obviously can still keep your athleticism, you feel me? Especially if you take care of yourself with the food you eat and the food to eat, and, you know, pretty much just watch your overall health and your cortisol levels and all that. Yes, stress is a big factor too, how people age bad and all, you know, all the good, all the bad stuff right there. You want to How do you avoid being stressed as much as possible? How do you avoid being stressed as much as possible? Well, I mean, I would definitely say, you know, you do the things you enjoy and love doing, you know what I'm saying? You go out to eat with your family or just hang out with, you know, loved ones. And this is me trying to rep 95. I typically rep it, but again, I'm working out fasted. So yeah, you're going to see a lot of the things that, you know, I'm not able to fully do without food in my system. And I know a lot of y'all are like, but that's stupid. Why not just eat? Well, I love a challenge, you feel me? And I just love to fast. So I work out fasted, obviously. In the summertime, I may start eating some food. I just, I'm just not, you know, I just don't like eating food before I work out or putting any food in my system. But like I said, I will try to switch that up a little bit, you know what I'm saying? And yeah, we did some, you know, uh, uh, one-arm back rows right here. We typically go heavy, probably like, like, you know, I never really go anything above 80, you know, typically, uh, uh, well, 70, 80, honestly, 70, 80, 85. And yeah, we just, you know, like I said, we just push weight, you feel me? It's good to push weight sometimes. After that, you know what I'm saying, we just rest a little bit. And next I moved on to some step-ups, like some explosive step-ups. Like, this is also good to shock and prime your CNS as well. You know, you just have to do things very aggressively, you know, in a— but in a controlled manner, you know what I'm saying. If you're doing things in a controlled manner, you know, especially if you have the form down and the technique down, you know, you're, you're not going to injure yourself. Now, like I said, you have to be careful if the joints are not bulletproof. You will obviously injure yourself, and I emphasize that a lot. So with this, I had to do, you know what I'm saying, a good 3 sets. Well, I actually did 4 sets. So there's a good 4 sets of calf raises, and I typically go very heavy. As you see that, I'm going heavy, you know what I'm saying? The joints love weights. Yes, I tell this to people all the time. Your joints love weights, man, you know what I'm saying? Just, just put some weight, but make sure you're pushing it carefully, you know what I'm saying? Especially when it comes to your joints. Next, I'm moving to some explosive What's called power cleans, you know what I'm saying? This is not single leg power clean, this is split squat power cleans, you know what I'm saying? Very, very good for first step quickness. This is how I'm training like an athlete. Yes, I did do a bunch of reps of this and a bunch of sets of this, but I never really go above 6 to 7 repetitions when I'm doing power cleans, any type of power cleans. With this, I think I did about 4 or 5 sets of 6, uh, 6, 6, uh, 6, uh, what's called repetition. It's very good. What you do with one leg, you do with the other leg. As you can see, I did it with my left leg, so now I'm doing my right leg. This, this is really helpful, you know, like I said, uh, first step quickness right there. Then we moved to some hand cleans, hand cleans and some, you know, uh, jerk snatches and all that. Very explosive movement. You want to do this. This is good for speed, obviously, you know, like you're catching the— but you're catching the weight and you're exploding up. As you can see, it's literally mimicking it, you know what I'm saying? Triple extension right there and, you know what I'm saying? Always, uh, I like that. I like demonstrating like that. Next move is some— what's it called— some power split. What's it called? Split squats. Why? Yeah, these are really good right here. Oh, SP, some others call it quarter squats right there, you know what I'm saying? You can call it either one. But actually, well, with a split— oh wait, I always make a mistake with that. With a split squat, your leg is actually always in front, so it's splitting, you know what I'm saying? So yeah, after this, when we did this, right, when I did this, because he— I stopped working with him. This is pretty much my workout in that sense, you know what I'm saying? Uh, when I stopped working with him because he had to go— he had to go to work and all that, one of my clients, Pete. After that, you know, post-potentiation, you know, this is when you jump after pushing some heavy weight, you know what I'm saying? Obviously you will not be able to generate enough force. What it does is it tricks your body, you know what I'm saying? Because I just lifted some heavy weight, so now I'm trying to, you know, generate as much force as I can by jumping up, you know what I'm saying? So yeah, you know, and I'm trying to jump as much as I— as high as I can to my full capabilities. Well, at least for the meantime, because like I said, I still don't have enough energy because I'm in a fatigued state. When you're in a fatigued state, It will be hard to generate that much power. Next, now we do the real RDLs. I don't want to say— well, let me not say real RDLs, but you know, we stretch, you know, uh, hamstrings now, you know what I'm saying? We lengthen them, which are really good. So, you know, with this, I think I did about 3 sets of 8 to 9 repetitions. Did I do— oh, I think it was like 8 to 9 repetitions. Yeah, and I met some cool dudes, man, you know, cool kids, you feel me? Uh, we're talking. I'm about to go rock climbing with them, man. They were cool kids, man, you feel me? So they were using— like I said, they were just, uh, asking about the camera and all that. So yeah, I was just— I was just giving a little game, man. I'm I know a little game to them and all that. I'm getting old, man. You feel me? I'm reaching unct status. So you know I started I started giving out you know advice and all that. But hey, man, you know it's a blessing. You feel me? It's a blessing. It's always good to know that what you you know what you do can somewhat inspire people or just you know like you know people just take you know they just they just love that in a sense. You feel me? And I always appreciate that love. This is what what I call overcoming isometrics. I digress. Apologies on that. We call isometrics right here. We always trying to stiffen and you know, uh, uh, our tendons right here. You feel me? Isometric holds up really good. I'm trying to overcome isometrics. I'm pulling on the bar as hard as I can. What you do with one leg, you do with the other leg. Then after that, I moved into some chest. When I'm typically done, you know, working out, right? And a lot of my programs when I write them, so like you have time to do other things as well. You know what I'm saying? Like, like people always ask, how do I, how can I build muscle, right? If you know, how can I build muscle if you know, if the program, you know, it looks like it doesn't build muscle? Well, Whatever you do, right, especially with athletic training, it is a byproduct. Literally, it is always going to be a byproduct. And it's like, you know, you're going to build that physique, you know, as a byproduct of, you know, you just working out and lifting weights and picking up and dropping weight down. You feel me? You always build a physique as a byproduct. So do not forget that, ladies and gentlemen. After that, you know what I'm saying? I typically do cardio. I did not record it because I feel like it's kind of corny just recording, you know, you walking and all that. Yes. Conversational pace. I always walk at a conversational pace. It's cold over here, so guess what? We're gonna do the cardio inside, you know what I'm saying? But it, you know, it will start getting warm in like 3 to 4 weeks. Thank God. I hope so. Please, please God, I hope it gets warm, you feel me? So I can really show y'all the real workouts. I call it a real workout because I'm sprinting, I'm doing hill sprints, I'm doing sleds, I'm doing all these, you know, things that really spike your testosterone and allowing you to stay lean and obviously burn fat, you feel me, ladies and gentlemen? Yes. Core. This is what I call the cable ab crunch. It is an S-tier ab workout. We do abs every single day at different intensities. Trust me on that. I'm gonna show you some abs. You know, I look a little fat. I am a little fat right now. I mean, well, to my standards, this, this is fat, honestly. I know people say, oh, that's not fat, but to my standards, that's fat. You know what I'm saying? I'm a lot leaner in the summertime, as y'all know, especially if you've been watching my videos for, for a while now. I get a lot A lot leaner in the summertime. So, you know, I'm looking forward to that. It takes me about like a month because, you know, I'm already strict with my diet, so that's why I'm still in shape, obviously, you feel me? But it takes me about a month because, you know, what I do is I get a lot of steps. I get about like 20K+ steps, if I'm correct. That's a lot. And especially if you're, you know, you're able to do all that and obviously eat clean and eat healthy, guess what? You're going to build muscle, stay lean, and And still just look like an overall specimen, man. Like, I'm telling you, man, like, I just cannot wait. That's why I love summer, man, because I get to work out outside and train outside. But yeah, man, you know what I'm saying? Like, with this, we do abs every single day at different intensities. This is one of the things I'm gonna die on the hill for, you know what I'm saying? I tell that, I tell that to people all the time. Train your abs every day, every, every day, uh, what's it called, at different intensities. It's gonna help out in every lift. It's gonna make you strong in every lift you do. Trust me on that. Your core is the foundation, you feel me? So do not neglect that at all, ladies and gentlemen. And yeah, y'all, y'all stay blessed and disciplined.
