Coach Vaughn went from skinny to muscular and describes the mental trick he uses to stay disciplined: "self-gaslighting," convincing yourself to train when motivation drops. He emphasizes functional fitness over pure looks, including sprints to preserve fast-twitch muscle and reaction time.

How did we even get here, man? I've become too sexy for my own good. Um, I digress, but, uh, you know, it was— it wasn't too long ago I was a very skinny, scrawny guy. Literally, it was literally about 3 years ago. I was skinny, scrawny. I was in college, uh, you know the drill, man. Had no muscle definition and all that. All of a sudden, you know, we are out here with some really good muscle definition, looking like a damn specimen, or Captain America if you want to call it. But I digress from that though, uh, not too much self-glazing. Of course you should love yourself, but let's talk about how I was able to get here and how you can get here too, ladies and gentlemen. Well, let me start by saying having a great physique is, uh, one of the highest forms of, you know, your status symbol out there. You would get respect. People would automatically want to hang out with you, you know, invite you to places, things you don't even do, but you know, just because, you know, You look good. Let's be real, you know what I'm saying? Uh, you know, physically you look good, and that is what a lot of us see, you know, at a surface level. A lot of us human beings are shallow, let's be real. I'm very much aware of this, that some people would just want to be around me simply because of my physique. That is a fact. Excuse me, because I've, you know, I've encountered that, I've noticed it, but it doesn't really bother me honestly because I'm a really calm guy. But yes, how can you achieve this level of, uh, physique, if you want to call it that, you know what I'm saying? Um, how can you, you know, achieve something that many people want? You know, it is a, it is a very valuable thing. That's what gives it value, you know what I'm saying? Because it is, it's hard to acquire it, so it is not ubiquitous. It gives it that value itself. Well, number one, you will have to learn how to gaslight yourself. Now, when I say gaslight yourself, what do I mean by that? Honestly, I got to this level of discipline, if you want to call it, by simply gaslighting myself. Well, I shouldn't say simply because it takes a lot of mental fortitude. I would wake up, you know, in the mornings and just, you know, really just do it, man. You know, I know it sounds, you know, it sounds easier said than done, of course, but I just had to gaslight myself a lot, ladies and gentlemen. And is that the most healthiest way to go about things? No, discipline is not necessarily, you know, pretty. You know what I'm saying? It's not, you know, you know, hard work isn't necessarily pretty. But it gets done though, you feel me? Depending on how you get it done, which, you know, that happened to be my method was to gaslight myself, especially when I didn't know the end results per se, you feel me? I had no idea I was going to achieve this. You know, let's be real. When people, when people say, yeah, I was going to— I had no idea. I'm going to be real with you. And that is a fact. So I had to really gaslight myself, you know, wake up and wake up in the morning. Go run, you know, fast, do things I didn't want to do per se, but that built up that strong mental fortitude. I had no idea I was killing, you know, two birds with one stone, building a strong body and a very fortified mindset. You know what I'm saying? It really has helped my mindset to the point where I don't, you know, really have to tell myself to be disciplined. It's, it's a habit now and I'm gonna die with it, quite literally. You know, which is kind of crazy because I know some people have to tell themselves to be disciplined. They have to, you know, prep themselves up and all that. I am very grateful for the fact that I don't have to do that anymore because discipline is all I really know, you know what I'm saying? I am what I am. It's all I know. I truly, I truly mean that to the point where it's, you know, it's— I don't want to say easy, it's just doable for me, you know what I'm saying? Because if it's easy, obviously I'm not really improving, but I am improving. I know it's not— I know it's not easy. It's just doable for me. And I, you know, I do a great job of gaslighting myself. I gaslight myself in a sense, you know, by telling myself, yo, I, I'm not satisfied. I need more. I need more. I need more. Obviously, you know, greed is also a very dangerous thing, but not in the sense how I want to, you know, want everything. No, I just know I can be a lot better than I am right now. And this is a pretty good— this is a pretty good, you know, finish line per se. But, you know, I want more because I know that I'm capable of much more. I mean, you know, I'm not even in my prime yet. So yes, ladies and gentlemen, you are capable of much more. Now, number 2, I digress a little bit because I am, you know, simply talking about, you know, how, you know, one can achieve a really great physique and all that. But let's also talk about the workouts you see me doing. You know, I love to have fun in a sense. You know, when I'm working out, this is a part of me gaslighting myself so I don't, uh, Feel the— I don't feel the pain, uh, what I'm inflicting on myself. But really, you know, you should definitely add sprints to your workouts, to your routine. I will talk about the workouts right now. This is one of the best things you can add to your routine for the simple fact that not knowing— a lot of people don't know that their fast-twitch muscle fibers, they atrophy a lot quicker than any other thing in the body. And when those are gone, you know, obviously it goes along with your CNS and all that central nervous system, but when those are gone It really messes you up, ladies and gentlemen. How does it mess you up? You know, you're able to not catch— you, you will be able to not catch yourself on the floor anymore, uh, or catch yourself from falling down, which is very dangerous. A lot of people need that reaction time and that, you know, stability and balance to be able to catch themselves as they get older, you know, because one little step, you're cooked. You know, if you're dealing with injuries, you're dealing with pain, you know, all these things that you do not want to be dealing with. So it is important to really add sprints to your routine and really train as I am training right here. I train— my training is very, uh, it's very weird to a lot of people simply because they've never really seen, uh, they never really seen someone, you know, obviously, you know, move like that, also have great muscle definition and all too. I just don't train to simply look good. Yes, that is, uh, a part of it. Of course, you look good, you feel good, and you feel good, obviously life will be good for you. In fact, a lot better for you. But I train to be very functional. Functional in the sense how I want longevity. I'm trying to go grow old, beat my kids in any physical activity or just, uh, athletic endeavor really there is. I'm that much of a competitive dad. Uh, I say dad, I don't got no kids. Yeah, I'm tripping. I'm going to be that much of a competitive dad, you know what I'm saying? But how would I be competitive if I do not keep up my body? Now I can build a good physique all I want, but I can build a good physique, you know, by lifting, you know, dumbbells, you know, just building some good muscle and all that. But all muscle is not necessarily, uh, functional. All muscle is good, you know what I'm saying? Muscle is obviously good and healthy, but it's not necessarily functional for the things you may need. For example, a sprinter will not be able to do what a powerlifter is doing, and a powerlifter would not be able to do what a sprinter is doing. You have to build the type of muscle that works for you, you know, it's functional for you. And let's be real, A lot of sprinters, you know, would you rather look like a sprinter or a distance runner? I always use this comparison. No diss to distance runners. This is no diss. I started off doing distance. I was skinny as hell. I was a twig, you feel me? No offense. And it's like I said, I'm not dissing distance runners. That's not my intention. I'm just saying most distance runners on the average, they, they don't, they don't have that masculine frame is what I'm trying to say, you feel me? But we, we want that masculine frame. Yes, you can always running all that. But we want that masculine frame, and, uh, uh, ladies and gentlemen, that's what we're aiming for. Because that masculine, that masculine frame, you know, it commands respect. Let's be real, all men want respect. You know what I'm saying? All men really crave respect.
I know.
And what better way to gain respect, right, than to really build yourself from ground up? You know what I'm saying? Build a statue of yourself. Build something that others can, you know, really reverence and respect. And really hold you on, on not a pedestal. We don't want that because we are not, we are not, uh, we're not what's called facetious individuals. But you know, we want respect, you feel me? Respect in, in the kindest manner ever. So yes, it is important to really do these things, you feel me? And of course, you see how I train. I train very, uh, articulately in a sense, you know. No, nothing is random. Nothing is, uh, it's all planned and My client right there, I'm training with him. I'm making him do his— like, that's his workout and also my workouts. I add it in the program, you know what I'm saying? I try not to make it complicated for them because this journey should be fun. You should enjoy, you know, remodeling yourself, rebuilding yourself, because what's the point of you not enjoying the product, the process, you know what I'm saying? The process is to obviously, uh, reinvent yourself in a sense, you know what I'm saying? We'll build a better version of you. A better man, a better woman, whatever it may be. You're trying to make yourself proud. You're trying to make yourself great. So I, you know, I truly do believe a lot of you can definitely become too sexy for your own good. That is the goal after all, you feel me? So yes, it is very, very possible to attain these things once you know that you will have to put in some work, sacrifice some blood, tears, and sweat. And of course, Really just be very, very stubborn and disciplined with yourself to the point of even gaslighting yourself. Let's be real, you will have to gaslight yourself some days you do not want to go to the gym. I have to do that sometimes too, but it's never been too crazy on my end because I just love to discipline myself, you know what I'm saying? That's all I know.
