Brigid Titgemeier explains hormones as chemical messengers that work in layers: insulin and cortisol form the base, thyroid hormones sit in the middle, and sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone sit on top. Most people try to fix sex hormone imbalances without addressing the foundation first, which doesn't work.

Hormones. These are our chemical messengers and they are circulated throughout your entire body to help to regulate your key functions. And they allow you to adapt and to respond to changes in your environment. But they don't act alone. So they are highly interconnected and they form what I call the hormone pyramid, which is where each of these hormones connect and impact one another. So at the base of your hormone pyramid, you have two hormones. One is a metabolic hormone, insulin, and the other is a stress hormone, cortisol. And then in the middle layer, you have your. Your thyroid hormones. These are T3 and T4 as your two primary thyroid hormones. And then at the top are your sex hormones, your progesterone, estrogen and testosterone levels. Everyone wants to start with correcting the sex hormones up here without thinking about the base of their pyramid and being able to optimize the foundation of the hormone pyramid. Optimizing the base of the hormone pyramid is definitely where I recommend starting. You can't balance your estrogen and progesterone without addressing cortisol and insulin.
