Brigid Titgemeier explains why nutrition advice is a mess: functional medicine practitioners call eggs and kale toxic, traditional doctors dismiss nutrition entirely and push GLP-1 drugs, and laypeople spread unvetted tips from AI. The result is chaos that leaves people confused about what to eat.

This is a hot take on why everyone is so confused when it comes to nutrition. I might end up deleting this because I look like a hot mess, because I am a hot mess right now, but I feel like you may be experiencing this, so I wanted to share what I'm seeing. One, we have functional medicine doctors who are very well-intentioned but sharing things on their blogs, podcasts, social media, saying things like eggs are toxic, avocados are toxic, kale is toxic, and if you eat these foods, then you're going to increase your inflammation. The second thing is that you then have traditional doctors who now have social media presence who like, no, nutrition doesn't really matter all that much. There's not randomized controlled trials showing these and these outcomes. And pretty much we're at the state that every single person needs to be on a GLP-1 for the rest of their lives if we actually want to create a healthy society. And then the third realm of nutrition information that's being given is maybe from like a friend of yours who is a hairdresser who then improved their health and has been watching health information on the internet and is like, oh, blood sugar balance is important for hormone health or other things, when they don't really know what that means and they're kind of regurgitating information that they're getting from Claude or ChatGPT or that they're seeing on other people's social media. And that is the extent we are operating in the wild, wild west right now with not a lot of credibility when it comes to nutrition advice being given and these posts getting like 100,000 shares or 500,000 shares. That makes it super confusing. So I am super dedicated to trying to provide evidence-based nutrition recommendations, merging the worlds of functional medicine and, and root cause orientation with also thinking about how to stay in alignment with the science. And it feels just like it's scary times.
