Cynthia Thurlow says most women eat only 40-50g of protein daily, far too little. When protein is low, your body keeps hunting for calories from carbs and fats to meet its protein needs, leaving you constantly hungry. Eating enough protein triggers fullness signals and stops the late-night snacking cycle.

We are generally, as a society, we eat too much carbohydrate, we eat the wrong types of fats, and we eat too little protein. And I just think for women, especially women that tell me they're never satiated, they're having blood sugar instability, they're not feeling like their body composition is heading in the direction they want to go in, it is almost always chronic protein underconsumption. And it's like when I look at a food diary, even if I just get a week or 3 or 4 days, women are eating like 40 or 50 grams of protein. I'm like, okay, well, first of all, you're not going to be able to maintain muscle mass. You're going to lose it. And sarcopenia is not a question of if but when. But this explains in many instances why you're standing in your pantry or looking in your freezer at 8 o'clock at night saying, why do I feel like I'm hungry? And it's because of this protein leverage hypothesis that if you don't consume enough protein over the course of your day, your body is looking for additional calories to make that up with. So I think that underconsumption of protein is a huge problem. I can say that without reservation, that that is a chronic habitual problem. And once I get women eating enough protein, they'll say, oh, I'm full, like I don't even think about eating more food. Like those stretch receptors in their stomach have been stimulated, so their brain then realizes that they're actually full.
