Cathy Heller explains that meditation isn't about stopping thoughts but observing them. Start your day with slow breathing and a "radio-tuning" practice to choose what you focus on. Seek evidence of hostility and you'll find it; tune into kindness instead and the world becomes kinder.

When people meditate, often they don't enjoy it because they think. Meditation is about not thinking. It's not about not thinking. Your heart will always be as long as you're alive. And your mind will always race. It's witnessing the mind. It's selecting what thoughts you're thinking. It's having the capacity to be the observer of the mind, because that's who you really are. The reason all of that is so important is because if you start your day where you slow down and you breathe and you have these moments to tune the radio, so to speak, within you to who you really want to be, you start hearing a different song in the field around you. If you want to look for the evidence that the world is out to get you, you'll feel that all day long. But if you tune in every single morning to like the feeling of equanimity within yourself, you'll be a better version of yourself. And then actually, you'll find the evidence that you can be kind to yourself. And the world is actually a pretty kind, generous place. It's whatever you select, and all of that's going to help you with whatever it is that you want to create.
