Brigid Titgemeier explains that a calorie deficit alone won't work if you ignore what's underneath: blood sugar imbalances, insulin resistance, chronic stress, and gut issues. A caloric deficit alone will not guarantee fat loss. Calories do matter. A slight caloric deficit is important so that you are not in a large caloric deficit that drastically lowers your metabolism. But at the same time, a caloric deficit alone will not guarantee results, not just for your body composition. But if we're thinking about using food as medicine and food as information, for the women who have been able to reverse their prediabetes and improve their inflammatory markers and improve their autoimmune disease and improve their energy and their mood swings and so many other things, this is much more than just just a calorie-focused approach. So even if you're in a caloric deficit, you may struggle with not only losing weight but improving symptoms if you have blood sugar imbalances and insulin resistance, if you are in a chronically stressed state where you are just high cortisol all the time, if you have thyroid dysregulation, if you are experiencing hormonal dysregulation where your estrogen is dropping, your testosterone is lower, you're chronically inflamed, you have gut microbiome imbalances. All of these things— large caloric deficits can make these issues even worse by increasing more stress on the body.
