Why “Healthy” Meals May Be Spiking Your Cravings

In this monologue, Brigid Titgemeier explains that merely choosing foods labeled as "healthy"—such as oatmeal, fruit, or grain bowls—does not guarantee stable blood sugar. Imbalanced meals, even when made with whole foods, can cause rapid blood sugar spikes followed by crashes, leading to fatigue, irritability, and intense sugar cravings. She identifies blood‑sugar dysregulation, especially in the context of insulin resistance, as the strongest predictor of cravings. While the body can normally handle temporary glucose elevations, insulin resistance impairs this response. To counteract spikes, Brigid recommends constructing meals that include sufficient protein, healthy fats, and fiber, which together blunt glucose surges, reduce fatigue, and improve control over food choices.
