Dr. Sarah Berry explains how quickly your body responds to diet changes: your gut microbiome shifts in three days, cholesterol drops in 10 days to two weeks, and blood pressure improves in four weeks. The microbiome fluctuates throughout the day on its own circadian rhythm and reacts to what you eat.

There is research showing that your gut microbiome can change in just three days of changing your nutrition. Is that right?
Research that was actually conducted by one of my PhD students, looking at how quickly your gut microbiome changes. And they saw that, yes, within three days, you can see a notable difference. But it's actually changing continuously throughout the day. It's changing depending on the time of day. So our gut microbiome has its own circadian rhythm, so its own body clock as well. It's changing as and when we're eating a meal. So many intermediary risk factors for health and so many markers change very quickly. Our study shows if you have high cholesterol and you change your diet, you see a change in 10 days to two weeks. You see a change in blood pressure. When you change your diet to a diet that's favorable in terms of blood pressure in as little as four weeks.
