How To Be Extremely Captivating To Those Around You

Charlie Houpert breaks down Tony Robbins' body language and gestures to show how he commands a room. Watch how Robbins uses movement and physical presence to hold an audience's attention.
Charlie from Charisma on command. And today I'm going to be doing another video breakdown for you, this time on body control and gesticulation. And for this, I have picked who I personally think is the best person that I've ever seen at using their body to communicate. And that person is Tony Robbins. So in this video you're going to see he's seated, so he doesn't even have a full range of walking back and forth to control a space or a stage. But I want you to notice how he uses his body to communicate charismatically. The things that he wants to get across. First thing that you'll notice, and I think this is potentially the most important thing when you think about using your body, is that the energy that you feel and the way that you use your body are totally linked, right? So it's very, very hard to sit still with your hands glued to your side and be excited yourself and make other people feel excited. Versus if you have your arms moving about freely and you're walking and you're controlling a space, you're likely to feel an increase in energy personally, and you're going to be able to transmit that to the people around you much better. So watch one how high energy Tony is and how that is completely reflected and mirrored in the way that he uses his body.
When I was on stage, I had this audience of about 15,000 people at the Continental Center. It was during a stretch break. I was doing what I love, rocking the house. Everybody's going crazy. And they go, their stock's worth 400 million bucks right now. I was like, what?
So notice the incredible range of gesticulations that Tony Robbins has. Most people stand when they talk with their hands sort of bent in a 90 degree angle at their elbow, and they have one gesticulation, and it's like an unfolding of their hands and like maybe a point with a finger. Tony touches his head, moves his arms from above the elbow. He'll wave them out completely. He opens his palms, whispers into his hands. All of these different things that he does make him much, much, much more engaging of a speaker. So continue to watch just what a wide variety of ways he has to use his body.
Oh, that's cool. It's like, okay, that sounds stupid. It's like, what's next? And I went right back to what I loved. Once you break through, then it just becomes a game. The people that are getting your products have not yet broken through in most cases.
So one of the things you're going to notice here is how, though he's not standing, Tony is forward and back in his seat. By controlling the amount of space between you and your audience, you keep them on their toes. Now, you don't want to get right up in somebody's grill, necessarily, but I can promise you that if you do, they're going to pay attention and feel your presence. And then if you pull back, you can actually maintain that attention. So notice how Tony goes forward and back in his seat and how it keeps the two guys that he's speaking to incredibly engaged.
The breakthrough happens by conditioning your mind every day, by feeding it a role model or story. It's putting yourself in a peak state. When you follow through, by getting physically strong, it's creating a little rich.
So this is something else that a lot of people don't do, that Tony does. He's got snaps, claps, chest pats, all. All these little things that create a pop of noise that calls attention to him. In any room, when you're doing that, and I've seen people do this, it makes eyes go to you. And all of a sudden, people who might not even be listening to your conversation are going to go, who is that guy? Who is that girl? They're going to be intrigued by what you are saying because you are making very unique noises with those snaps and those claps. The second thing is notice how open Tony's palms are. The majority of the time, he keeps these palms open. The Guy is about 6 foot 7, so he's an intimidating figure. And one of the ways you communicate very quickly that you don't mean harm is by revealing your palms to people. And just notice, with almost all of his gesticulations, you can see his palms.
Doing a little bit each day, and then you get momentum. But the most important thing of all is what we start out with. Why? Absolutely. Why is it a must for you? It doesn't have to be you're against the wall, but it has to be something you're hungry for, because the only difference in people is hunger.
Last thing I'll say, just in terms of the wide, wide range of things that Tony can do, the way that he uses his fingers, and this sounds crazy, but most people have one way of using their wrist and their fingers. It's either incredibly loose or incredibly rigid and tight. And you'll see that the way that Tony uses his wrists, his forearms and his fingers in is completely contextual to what he's saying. When he wants to make a serious point, he sort of flexes them, right? And when he is Talking about being light and fluffy and not believing something. He's got this looseness there. You don't want to just stick with one or the other. Typically speaking, the flexness is going to communicate seriousness, it's going to communicate pay attention. But it can run flat if that's all you have. That looseness communicates whimsy. It communicates that something is not serious but. But it can be seen as very soft if that's all that you have. Having a range of them that match the things that you're saying is where you become an incredibly, incredibly dynamic and charismatic speaker. So just watch a little bit more.
Not hungry. Get around people that are hungry and something will hit you. You watch a conversation, you get around people that are doing better and all of a sudden you start going, my life sucks. I remember I went to a guy in la, he's one of the most multi billionaire guy I'll never forget. And I lived in the Del Mar castle and I was really proud. That was like the symbol of me having taken myself from being poor to providing for my family. This great place built from castles in Europe, overlooking the ocean not far from you.
You can see there he waves his hand around loose and then tight from when he's making that shape from his brain to the sky.
