The Real Secret to Having Aura (It’s Not What You Think)

Charlie Houpert says aura is a primal sense of safety, not fame or looks. It comes from three things: comfort being seen, building genuine relationships, and staying calm under pressure. Modern humans treat being watched as a threat, but recognizing the low real risk of embarrassment lets you relax and project confidence.

What is aura? Someone walks into a room and you just feel it. It's that commanding presence that immediately makes you take notice. But where does it come from? The internet says that it comes from dancing on the edge of a speedboat or posing for photos. I've studied charisma for 20 years and helped over 30,000 students, and I can tell you aura comes from one thing: how you handle fear. Watch this lion. The second that he steps into view, every animal senses it. How's that different from the feeling that we get from Tommy Shelby's cold stare or Don Draper's cool demeanor? We feel their presence because people with aura broadcast the same signal— they are totally safe under threat and in a world full of fearful people, they seem fearless. So if you want real aura, the kind that cannot be faked, the kind that people truly feel, you have to tap into a much deeper place. Straight in the hole! This doesn't mean that you have to become a superstar athlete or a global icon to have aura too. It just means that you need to channel a part of yourself that has probably been suppressed. So let's go through 3 ways to build the kind of aura that lets you walk into any room and make people take notice. So here's the thing— because aura has to do with a primal sense of safety, Safety under threat, we have to acknowledge that physical size can project aura. And it's not just because when someone tall enters a room that they stick out. It's because we are hardwired to read size as dominance. And that's why you see so many guys wearing boots or lifts to create presence. And look, I'm not here to tell you that those things won't get you noticed. Height can help, but it will not fix the actual thing that's missing. That is the comfort with being seen that projects real aura which is the exact reason that not all tall people have aura. Take a friend of mine; he's actually 6'5 but whenever we would go out together, he would get fidgety and uncomfortable. He'd project a nervousness and like this feeling of a lack of safety that kind of looked like this. This shrinking behavior with hands hidden— my friend would even hunch— this is exactly the type of behavior that animals exhibit when they feel unsafe being seen. Now, this isn't me picking on Michael or my friend because the truth is this is how most of us behave when we're in social situations. But people who have aura, they behave in the exact opposite way for a very simple reason— they're not afraid of being seen. Watch this clip of Matthew McConaughey for an example. Notice how Stephen invites Matthew to his seat but he has other ideas. Matthew takes his time; he acknowledges the band, the audience. He's in complete control and has no fear of being perceived the wrong way by Colbert or anyone else. This complete safety in self radiates aura. Think about it. When we feel safe in an environment, how do we behave? We slow down, we stretch our legs out, we welcome the spotlight without worrying how we look. This can be a hard thing to develop in new settings or environments but I promise you, no one feels this type of safety perfectly naturally. That's because humans evolved in an environment where being seen meant being under threat. So if you want to build an aura like Matthew and so many others, you have to realize what they've come to understand and that's that our day-to-day danger response is completely miscalibrated to modern times. The truth is we no longer have any other predators or animals to fear when we're going to the proverbial watering hole. Our biggest fear is shame and embarrassment from other people. So to develop aura, you have to stop acting like your life is on the line every time you're in a new social setting or out with friends. The consequences of a misstep today are so much lower than in our evolutionary history Even if it doesn't feel that way, 99.99% of the time, you are safe to be seen. So if you want to exude aura, slow down. Recognize that your nervous system rushes when it feels under threat so that rushing is a sign your aura is off. That means that you have to let yourself move at a pace that feels good for you and take your time comfortably. Pause, reflect without rushing answers. You can also open up your vitals and let yourself be seen more. If you do that, 90 seconds later, you'll find that your body catches up and you genuinely feel more confident. That is the aura. And that leads to our next point which is that status is an undeniable part of aura. All that I mean by that is that people are drawn to others who seemingly can provide them with safety and security. Nice car. You should see my other one. Now, status isn't just about money or cars; it's about having enough power and confidence to feel truly comfortable Breaking social norms and to be seen doing it. Now, I am not talking about breaking ethical norms but think of the CEO who is confident enough to wear flip-flops and a hoodie to work or the unique style of someone like Johnny Depp. We're both now flustered. Now, I know you might be thinking, well, I'm not a famous actor or CEO; I don't have that kind of power, but you don't have to have that in the same way. You can break norms in a lot of different ways. For example, in social settings where everyone is generally looking around for the next conversation or checking to see the temperature of the room, what's going to be accepted, be the person who is genuinely invested in your interaction who isn't scanning the room looking what else is going on. This actually projects an aura of comfort and ease that you don't need to climb socially. This committed body language to whatever conversation you're having and the willingness to have fun without checking if it's okay That attracts people to notice you and potentially join in. Now, that isn't the kind of status we're used to but it is local status and it's very powerful. Here's another example of how you can build it. When I was living in New York, a friend invited my co-founder and I out to this really expensive club. Now, I was dead broke at the time but he'd bought a table so we got to skip the line and I remember having a great night and feeling genuinely grateful for the opportunity. So on the way out, while everyone else just sort of walked past the doorman, We stopped, we thanked him, told him that we'd had a great time, and got the guy's name. After a few minutes of conversation, we left. The next time that we were there, we didn't have a friend with a table but we walked right up to the front, greeted that same bouncer by name, and asked him how his night was going. He was like, Ah, pretty good, and then he said, Wait a minute. He goes away, comes back, lifts up the velvet rope, and lets us right in. Now, that actually continued for months and there was times where we would walk in and people go, Who do you know here? And I was like, literally just the guy outside. You can create this kind of local status too and it is surprisingly easy whether it's your local coffee shop, the gym, or even a work event. You just create relationships with the people that others usually ignore and that might be the desk person at your gym, the cleaning crew at the office, or the barista when ordering your coffee. When people see you being socially comfortable without needing to socially climb, it creates this powerful feeling of Why isn't this person following all of the same unspoken rules as the rest of us? And that creates aura. Now, the third way to develop aura is through composure under fire. When you're skilled enough at something, you become completely calm no matter your surroundings— whether that's a hostile environment or a high-pressure situation. That sense of calmness creates a powerful aura. That is why so many people with aura are elite athletes. But the composure that creates aura isn't reserved just for them. Sometimes it looks nothing like you'd expect. Now, you remember that aura farming clip from Speed? It was actually part of a trend that went viral about a year ago. Everyone thought that this 11-year-old kid was just showing off for doing this dance to be cool. But Ryan wasn't performing for the camera or internet style points. What he was doing was his actual role. In Indonesia, that means that it's his job to hype up his team of rowers and it's part of a 300-year-old festival tradition. So everyone who copied him to gain aura missed the point. He had genuine self-belief born from doing that dance so many times that he had no fear in falling. It wasn't an act to look cool; it was just who he was. And another example that comes to mind immediately when I thought of this video was that Turkish Olympic shooter who went viral in the 2024 Olympics. When his competitors wore specialized lenses and ear protection and all this custom gear, Yusuf showed up in a regular t-shirt, no glasses, no equipment, nothing, and he still won silver. Most people would never do that, but Yusuf had put in enough reps that he knew he didn't need those extra advantages. That self-belief radiated aura to everyone who watched. And that is the real key to building aura. You stop trying to look cool and start doing the reps until confidence isn't something that you reach for; it's just who you are. Now, that's not a fakeable technique; it is genuine self-belief built from evidence and not just evidence that you always win but evidence that even if you fall short, you still thrive. So the fastest way that I know of to build that same confident self-belief is not through more theory on aura; it's by actually doing daily reps that build your social skill And that is exactly what Charisma University is all about. It's our step-by-step 30-day program to make confidence easy to tap into in any moment so that people and opportunities naturally gravitate to you. And if for whatever reason you don't feel like it's worth every penny, you can get a full refund right from inside the program. Here's what just a few students have had to say. In 6 weeks, I went from being a socially awkward student with a few friends to a magnetic presence that is the life of of every event that I attend. And another student, After I did my day 1 class, I went to my typical salsa dance class and a girl I always see for the past 3 months approached me for the first time. She suddenly noticed me for the first time and couldn't believe she'd never seen me before and ended up offering me her contact info.
