Degree vs Experience? #careeradvice #careerdevelopment #careercoach #degree_college #careergrowth

Chloe Spillane argues that launching a business and taking action mattered more to her career than any degree. Job candidates who explain how they solve an employer's problem beat those with more credentials. Stop collecting qualifications and start showing your value.

This changed my career more than any qualification or degree ever did. Just doing the thing. If I had listened to everyone throughout my 20s that said I needed to get further qualifications or a degree to pursue the different career directions I wanted to go in, I never would have made a move. I did a Bachelor of Performance. I was going to be an actor. And then the career path that followed that, nothing like what that study was. If I had listened to everyone that told me when I wanted to start a business, you should get more experience, you should get some more credibility, you should work underneath someone else before you make that decision, you should get another qualification, I never would have started. There are so many people that come to me that want to make a change in their career or go down a different direction and feel that they need to get all of these qualifications to be taken seriously. But the thing is If you go to an interview and you are more of the type of person that they're looking for, as opposed to the person next to you that might have all the qualifications and degree but are not the right fit, you're going to be the person that they choose every single time. What you need to be doing, rather than spending all this time and money getting another degree, is understanding how to articulate your value, your value through your lived experience and through the skills that you have acquired that are transferable to the role in the industry and the space that you want to be in. Once you can articulate that, you are going to be so much more competitive than you think you are because you think you need to get some degree. That is what an employer is looking for. They are looking for how are you the right person to solve the problem they are trying to fix. And if you can show that value, if you can show them that you're the right person they need, you are going to come out on top time and time again. Stop wasting your time and money on getting another degree and figure out how to articulate your value instead.
