Chloe Spillane was made redundant, got 70 LinkedIn messages and 30 meetings, but turned down every job offer. Instead she worked four hospitality jobs while launching her own career-coaching business, Chloe Spillane Careers.

When I was made redundant, I remember coming home and literally being a crying heap on the floor. I know redundancy is a business decision, but for me it felt really personal, and I know that for so many of us that have been made redundant, it really hurts. So I'm just here to validate that. One of the biggest lessons I learned from my redundancy though is that the most important person in this is yourself and how much you back yourself to find the next best thing for you. Now for me, I had to go and find a job pretty quickly. I didn't have any savings, and my redundancy paycheck was about 3 months. I put up a post on LinkedIn. I had 70 people reach out to me with job opportunities. 70, legit. From that, I had 30 meetings, and from those 30 meetings, I had multiple interviews. But what was happening is that every time I go to an interview, I'd obviously excel at it because this is what I do, but I come home and I'd start crying because this wasn't what I wanted. I didn't want to leave that job, but I also didn't want to jump into just another job, but I also needed money. So it was like, what am I going to do? In that moment, I realized that I had to actually take the biggest risk of my life, turn down all the job offers, and back myself 100 million percent. So I took on 4 different hospitality jobs and decided then and there that I was going to do the thing that I've always wanted, which is to work for myself. And that's how Chloe Spillane Careers started. Biggest lesson here is that number 1, if you've been made redundant, put yourself out there, ask for help, use your network. People want to help you, and if they don't want to help you, they're assholes and they're not your people anyway. And number 2, if you want something to change, if you don't want to just jump into another job, you need to be your biggest cheerleader and you need to back yourself. So the question is, what do you really want and how much do you really want it?
