How to: ‘Salary Negotiations’ #careercoach #interview #interviewtips #interviewquestions #interviews

Career coach Chloe Spillane walks through a salary negotiation. Never accept an offer over the phone. Use market research to back your number, ask about flexibility in base and bonus, and always get a written offer with 48 hours to review before you sign.

This is what happens when you refuse to share your salary first with the interviewer, even when they push for it. They ask you, can you share your current payslip with us? You say, more than happy to share payslip information once we're at offer stage, but I'd rather that we base compensation on what this role requires and what I can bring rather than the last role that I was in. They push, we need the information for our records. You say, I understand that and I'm more than happy to discuss the range that I'm targeting for this role, but I prefer not to discuss my previous salary at this Stage. They push, we can only offer $100K, is this a problem? You say, thanks so much for being upfront with that. Based on the scope of this role, I was hoping to get a number closer to $110K. Is there flexibility in the base, or is there room for a bonus or any kind of compensation in this package? They pressure you, other candidates are accepting much less for this role. You say, sure, but I can only speak to the value I bring and what the market is paying for my experience based on my research. They say, pushing for a number on the spot, we're at the top of our range with that number, can you accept today? You say, I appreciate that, but 'Before I accept this role and sign the contract, I'd like to take some time to review the full offer in writing. Can you please send it through and I'll come back to you within 48 hours?' They ask you, 'If we match your number, do you have a deal?' And you say, 'If you can match my asking salary and we align on bonus and start date and leave, then yes, I can sign the contract today.' Never accept an offer on the call. There's always time to review the offer. There's always time to negotiate. They clearly see your value. They see that you are someone they need in their organization, so why wouldn't they pay you the number that you're asking for?
