INTERVIEW FEEDBACK REALITY #interviewhacks #interviewquestions #interviewtips #interviewskills

Chloe Spillane decodes what interviewers really mean when they say "not the right fit" or "we'll keep your details on file." She explains why they avoid blunt feedback and shares a recruiter's story of a runner-up hired months later. The real work, she says, is your own self-assessment.

This is what would happen if interviewers were honest with their feedback and actually gave it. They tell you, "Just wasn't the right fit." What they're really saying is, "We didn't really connect with you and we don't see you getting along with the rest of the team." They say, "Just don't have the right experience that we're looking for." What they really mean is, "We saw your potential on the resume, but you didn't convince us enough that you can actually do the job." They say, "We really liked you and we really enjoyed meeting with you." 'But we've decided to go with another candidate at this time.' What they really mean is, 'We enjoyed chatting with you, you were cool, but that's about as far as it goes, and we don't need a personality hire right now.' They say, 'It was so hard to pick between you and the other person, but they just had a little bit more of this skill that we're really looking for.' What they really mean is, 'We'd actually chosen that person the entire time, we just had to show the hiring team that we had multiple options.' They say, 'We'd love to keep your details on file for when another role might become available.' What they actually mean is, "We genuinely liked you and we wish we did have a role for you, but we don't have the budget." But we genuinely might have an opportunity for you in the future. Actually believe them when they say this because I've been a recruiter where this has actually happened. The person that came second, we then hired 3 months later. So that is kind of legit. What you need to know is that the interviewer is never really going to be honest with you because most of them aren't brave enough or they don't have the skills to give effective feedback. Or they're just too lazy to do it. So you need to kind of do your own self-assessment to figure out why you weren't chosen and what you need to learn or change for next time you're in that interview chair.
