Stop holding yourself back because you think you’re ‘unworthy’. #careergrowth #careeradvice

Chloe Spillane argues that imposter syndrome keeps people from applying for roles they could do. She says everyone has unique value but silences themselves thinking others are smarter. Getting an outside perspective on your achievements, learning to talk about your worth, and believing you can handle big things is how you break free.

Something I don't say enough is, is how many people hold themselves back in their career because they don't think they have enough value to offer. You won't speak up in the meeting because you don't think you're smart enough and that everyone else has something better to say. You won't reach out to that hiring manager because you don't think you have enough to offer, and you won't apply for that job because you just don't think you have enough value to bring and there's going to be someone else that's better than you. I'm here to tell you that you do have value to bring. You absolutely have something unique to offer, and you are capable of going for the big thing. Too often we'll sit in this space of going, oh, I'll just stay in this job, it's comfortable, it pays the bills, it does what it needs to do. I don't need to go for that big thing because it's just not really me, I'm just not really built for that, that's just not my thing. That's just you talking yourself out of it because you don't back yourself enough to take that leap. What you need is for someone to come and look at everything that you've done in your career, show it to you from a lens that you haven't seen before, and give you the tools to be able to articulate that value, not just to be able to speak well in an interview or to promote yourself, but to actually have the belief in yourself that you are capable of doing the big thing. And regardless of if it doesn't work out, you have what it takes to build yourself back up again, and you're going to be okay. The more that we talk ourselves out of doing something because we don't think that we have enough value to offer, the more that will be true. The more that you start to identify what you can bring and what you can offer, the more you're going to start to feel that you deserve to be in that room just as much as anyone else, and you deserve to applying for that role because you are just as valuable and capable as the person next, and you are capable of doing that big thing that scares the shit out of you.
