Chloe Spillane shares three tactics for handling tough interview questions: restate the question to confirm you understand it, ask the interviewer to repeat it, or request a moment to think. Each buys you time and keeps you from rambling when you're caught off guard.

When you get stumped in an interview, as in they ask you a question and you don't know what the fuck they've asked you, this is how you're going to handle yourself. It's not about you answering the perfect question, it's about how you handle yourself in that moment, and this is how you're going to do it. First, you're going to clarify. Just to clarify, what you're asking me is XYZ. In that moment, you can then clarify from your end what you think they're asking and find out whether that's right or not. Second thing is simply ask them to repeat the question, which then gives you more processing time to understand what they need from you. Do you mind asking me that question again? The third way is to give yourself a second to let the information sink in. If you kind of know what they might be asking you, but you just need to kind of run it through your brain, you'll ask them, do you mind if I just take a second to think about my response? And in that moment, you can then recalibrate what you wanna get across the table. These 3 strategies are gonna take you from someone that rambles nervously when you don't really know what you're talking about to someone who has clarity and can hold themselves in a situation where you're not really sure what the answer needs to be.
