Connor Beaton reflects on a quoted idea—"the most common form of despair is not being who you are"—arguing that anxiety, depression, and nihilism often come from failing to express one’s true nature, especially among men carrying responsibilities they don’t care about. He frames these feelings as meaningful data pointing someone back toward authentic self-expression and invites viewers to comment.

I saw this quote the other day and I thought, man, this is it. This is so damn true. The quote was, the most common form of despair is not being who you are. The most common form of despair is not being who you are. You see your anxiety, your sense of nihilism, and lack of fulfillment. This all lives in the place between the ego, who you are now, who you think you are, who you don't want to be seen as, who you're trying to be, who you're trying to portray yourself as, and the true expression of your nature, you know, who you ultimately are at your core. And so often we are feeling anxious, we are feeling sad or depressed. You know, Jim Carrey said, depression is your body's way of saying fuck you. And I love that idea. I think that's completely true. You know? You know, and obviously there's cases where it's. It's more than that, it's more complex than that. But the truth is that oftentimes we fall into a state of depression and anxiety and fear because we are not operating or living or embodying some of the traits that we know are truly us. We are not expressing ourselves through our work, through what we are building in a way that is actually meaningful to us. I see a lot of you guys, a lot of men in general, carrying responsibility that you don't actually care about at all. You have all this responsibility in your life. You have this big corporate job and da, da, da, da, but you don't actually care about the work that you do in any way, shape or form. And then you wonder why you feel empty and meaningless and you have no purpose in life. We have to be willing to acknowledge that when despair, when anxiety, when depression arises, that it's emp important data and information that is trying to guide us back home to a deeper sense of self. It's an indicator that something has gone off the rails. And yes, I understand that there are other cases for anxiety and depression and these types of things, but this is a really, really big one for a lot of men.
