Is There A Decline In Viable Mates?

Connor Beaton (YouTube, Aug 3, 2023) examines whether there is a decline in "viable mates," arguing that much of the perceived decline is driven by the "choice paradox" created by dating apps (greater visibility of potential partners) alongside shifting expectations (higher standards for men and women), cultural narratives (e.g., Red Pill claims about hypergamy), and structural factors (economic opportunity, legal/divorce risks). He suggests increased choice expands exposure to both more desirable partners and more psychologically unsuitable people, which biases perceptions of the dating pool and may make people pickier; he invites viewers to comment with their views.

Is there a decline of viable mates? Is there a decline of women or men for you to date that are sort of suitable to your needs? And this is a very interesting conversation because, you know, there's a lot of dialogue around how less men are going to college and less men are looking for a relationship. And if you watch Red Pill content, you'll, you'll sort of hear a lot of men talking about how less men have sort of. Less women, sorry, have sort of traditional values or, or that they're, they're just pursuing this hypergamous nature, right, of constantly looking for men who have greater status and, you know, are constantly mate swapping to move their way up through the hierarchical chain of society. And so, you know, I think one of the things that's challenging that I don't see a lot of people talking about within this conversation, if you put all that stuff aside, whether it's right or wrong, not really too sure. I'm sure that you'll let me know in the comments where you fall in that side of things. But I think one of the things that doesn't get talked about enough, that's affecting our perception of whether there's a decline in viable mates is simply the choice paradox. The idea that you as a single person in the world now have access to far more perspective of people than ever before than any human being in any in human history. Pretty much, right? I mean, if you're a woman on Tinder, if you're a woman on Bumble or Match or I don't even know what the rest of them are, Hinge or whatever, if you're a woman on any of those dating platforms, you are going to have access to, to more men than almost any woman in human history ever. And so what does that mean? It means that, yeah, you're going to be able to see way more of the eights, nines and tens, the men that you perceive to be valuable, the guys that you likely want to go after. But it's also probably going to give you insight into all of the men that you would usually not come into contact with because various reasons we'll leave those out, but for the most part, and same thing goes for guys, right? Guys. Like when you go onto these dating apps, when you connect with friends and they tell you stories about their experiences on dating apps, what you're hearing and what you're seeing is the gamut of women that are out there. And so whereas before you had to work pretty damn hard, you know, 20 years ago, you had to work really hard to gain perspective on the, the spectrum of women that are out there, the good, bad and the ugly. And I don't mean ugly physically, I mean ugly psychologically and emotionally. But now you can swipe, right? You can spend a few hours a day or, you know, every week on Tinder. You can go on dates constantly. You can meet women from around your area that you would like, you know, otherwise, never have used to have run into or built a relationship with. And so what happens is one, the volume of choice that you have is vastly greater than ever before. And two, the types of individuals that you're running into is vastly greater than ever before. So you have access to the dating pool in a way where you never had before, right? Like, if dating used to be this like little puddle that you could stomp around in, you know, 20, 30 years ago, now it's this massive body of water, this lake that, that you can kind of go swimming around in. And you can do that wherever you go. And so it's easier now to get biased, to get jaded, because you have vision, you have insight into the kind of terrible human beings that are out there, right? Just the horrible people that you're like, well, that person is not date worthy. And it's not that those people were never there before, it's just that you didn't see them, right? You likely weren't interacting with them at work, at home, in your social circles, with your family and friends. Whereas now you can go on a dating app and you can meet people that you otherwise would have never met before and that you would never interact with. And so it's become very easy for our perception that the dating market has gone to shit, that the, you know, that there's a decline in viable mates. Now, I'm not saying that there isn't. I think that there probably is. I think that for men and women, there probably is a real decline within viable mates, right? What women are looking for in terms of a, you know, a man with a college degree, a man who has a job making a certain amount of money, a man with a certain level of height and looks and, you know, whatever else it is that women are looking for and vice versa, right? I think one of the big sort of complaints that a lot of men have when they are out there dating is that women seem to have a much greater standard than they've ever had before. And the expectations on men are much greater than they ever had before. And when you couple that with a pretty large subset of women who are, who are explicitly saying, I don't want or need a man or I want, but I don't need a man. I think that that has pushed a lot of men out. As soon as a lot of men hear that, it's like, well, why would I want to be with you? Not to mention when you look at the legal system with divorce and all that type of stuff, a lot of men are sort of checking from marriage, long term relationships because there's not really a substantial reason for them to go down that path anymore. So if you're a man making good money in today's world and you know you're in your early or mid-30s or late-30s or 40s, or you know, you're in your 20s and you're making good money and you have access, you know you making good money, you are relatively good looking, you are relatively intelligent and well spoken, you're going to have access to more women than you know what to do with. And so I think that a lot of the men that women are often wanting to date have become a little bit more picky because they don't need to settle down because there's just more women to choose from. And I think that those men who oftentimes not that they have more traditional values, but they're going to prioritize things like loyalty, they're going to prioritize certain traits and characteristics that I think in the modern conversation has become very prominent that women don't care about those traits or characteristics anymore. So I'm curious to hear what you think comment below. Do you think that there is a decline of viable mates and what do you think is contributing to it? And as always, until next week, this is Connor Beaton signing off.
