Connor Beaton argues that men's low self-worth usually isn't caused by bad decisions or negative self-talk. Poor choices can make it worse, but something deeper, often external or from earlier in life, is usually the real source of feeling broken or worthless.

One of the most damaging things to your self worth is not the terrible decisions that you've made, not the way that you talk to yourself, not even the consequences of horrible choices and actions that you've taken in your life. One of the biggest determining factors in your sense of self worth had nothing to do with anything that you've actually done. So many men who feel like they have a broken sense of self, a broken sense of worth or value, it's not actually something that they created. Maybe they accentuated it by making terrible decisions and choices, making bad decisions, lying to myself, lying to other people, having zero impulse control, not pursuing the things that I knew I needed to do in order to actually respect myself as a man. Those things contribute to a lack of self worth. But the truth is that for many of you, you struggle with self worth because of something so much deeper.
